My problems with Casshern Sins are that it gets very repetitive with its imagery, language, and unrelenting oppression, and that the buildup of plot during the first half doesn't find a resolution in the second half, which just peters off to nowhere.

Great visuals though.

[Cowboy Bebop] - References

For the most part Cowboy Bebop references materials that aren't anime e.g. Cowboy flicks, jazz music, Chinese gangster films etc* but some times it has straight up call outs to previous anime titles. One major one that I had never considered until just now is to the 1985 series Dirty Pair, also produced by Studio Sunrise.

dtycowboydxuxc.jpg

Now, Dirty Pair and Cowboy Bebop share a few basic story similarities. Both shows are about characters in a sci-fi setting who go off on a variety of wacky adventures, with their own ship and pet animal, who generally end up either messing up or performing their given task rather poorly.

I hadn't made the connection until now because both shows are also fairly different from each other, they both look very different, are set in very different sci-fi futures, the characterisation is handled differently and of course Cowboy Bebop has a serious through-plot that's tied into the main character's past. Yet, as serious as Bebop is at time's it's can also be very silly. As I watching episode 2's bounty, Hakim, punch out a groom at a wedding just so that he could steal their 'Just Married' car I suddenly reminded of the kind of nonsense which would happen in Dirty Pair. Indeed, both shows actually have an episode which involves the main characters catching a genetically engineered animal:

Both shows feature an episode where the characters enter a casino and end up with a very important chip:

There's even a few visual similarities:

So while the shows are very different and the episodes themselves aren't particularly similar I can feel vague echoes of Dirty Pair in some elements of Cowboy Bebop, specifically in terms of the tone of the humour.

*For more information on these kinds references please see ghostlightining's excellent series on Cowboy Bebop here. It's really good.

Just been on a little hiking-ish walk with family. This seemed just about relevant enough to post here because there were horses, and the first thing those made me think of was Silver Spoon.

Also, I found myself musing that the Silver Spoon characters would probably be able to tell me why this horse was wearing some kind of strange outfit:

Oh, and getting out into the English countryside made me almost feel like I was in the idyllic England depicted in Kin'iro Mosaic. It also gave me the perfect opportunity to try out the Panorama feature on my iPod touch:

Whoever said the 3D world has nothing to offer?

So Mephisto comes to Earth and creates a giant Negatone. Cool. It proceeds to beat the living tar out of everyone, including Muse, until the three main Precure rediscover the Power of Friendship, which they use to defeat the Negatone, then set their sights on Mephisto, until....
Cure Muse protects him! Why? I don't know. Watch him be her father or something silly like that. Anyway, he takes the opportunity to open a giant pot and capture all the notes. Like, all of them.

Ok then... that was certainly a plot-productive episode...

There's a Plastic Nee-San gif that I want for this but I don't have it.

*Headdesk*
I was completely prepared for Muse to be Ako. That much was obvious. I didn't think I'd actually be right about her being Mephisto's daughter. Seriously, that was a sarcastic comment when I made it. Why, Suite, why?

Also, didn't expect Mephisto to not be the Big Bad. So someone's controlling him, too? *Sigh* New villain introduced in last section of story, check.

Well, I guess the train is speeding up, lets see if it derails...

Kiniro Mosiac 5

This episode gives attention more to Yoko, the character who seems to be the big sister of the group, on top of Isami having a sister complex (and probably favors Yoko more if the ending means anything.) They're becoming more aware that Aya is consisted of 90% Yoko (it's true!) and that Yoko either only consists of comedic retorts, or at least is 50% kindness.

Shino and Yoko's relationship was fleshed out, and gets played through the episode.

Still a feel good show thankfully.

Ako being his daughter came from nowhere from me, however, in regards to Mephisto not being the big bad, I saw it coming a mile away since he first appeared due to his goofy nature, on top of being humane looking.

The first five minutes of the next episode might kill you further.

Danganronpa The Animation 05

Ishimaru deserves the biggest hug of all time.

Still better than Devil Survivor 2 and that's about all that matters at this point.

So Mephisto is Ako's father.... and King of Major Land, making Aphrodite Ako's mother... and the old man guy is her grandfather. All that meaning Ako is the Princess of Major Land. My head is hurting indeed.

Still, a decent "I know you're in there somewhere" fight, with Mephisto being defeated and turned back to good... and the Trio is still evil. Gotta have some villains left, right?

Time for a movie break...

Railgun S - 17

Superb episode ..
New opening is much better than the first and this episode was quite good on all front ..railgun is finally back on their regular antics !!

Now they are clearly setting things up for future events in this episode but they didn't forget to bring somethings for the fun.

Dat familly restaurant scene :)

Can I just skip the episodes where Touma is present or should I watch them?

Free! 4

Men swimsuit shopping spree! Quite a nice departure from the norm of seeing the girls trying on clothing.

Rei looked fabulous with the butterfly swimsuit and I loved Gou's normal reaction to the boys muscles starting to wane after the continuous assaults.

Every since entering the cast (he has good design), things have just gone up and up in terms of episode and entertainment quality, while for the characters I cant help but feel as if things may collapse soon.
Striking Honda and eventually getting close to Ginka's father was abit too close to home and her statement at the end almost feels as if something may come to pass. I still cant help shake the feeling that Luna or someone will die but how it hasnt happened in the first five episode is a bit surprising. Minor thing, I didnt know normal humans could use the cards like that.

And now we know why Cure Ace might be Cure Muse v2

If Cure Ace somehow ends up being
The Queen's daughter
, I'll have to headdesk harder than I ever have before.

We have to explain Madoka Aguri SOMEHOW, because we still know jack shit about her.

part of the reason why I linked her to Cure Muse, lack of any real development before showing up "for real"

And they're pretty much wasting Cure Ace as it is. We now know she likes tea and practically gasms from good sweets. That's about it really.

Found some art that might depict the next power up for the Doki Doki Precures, and it's clear that they really don't give a shit.

All they did was throw wings onto the existing base uniform. No frills or any additives. Just wings. More evidence that they blew their budget on Cure Ace's DTF transformation.

Daybreak Illusion 5

Another good episode, though still in MOTW territory with little overall plot advancement. Things did get shaken up just a bit this week, though, with the Daemonia being
related to one of the main characters in a way

But Ginka's father
isn't a normal human, specifically. It was said that he had the blood of Elemental Tarot users in him, so that probably explains why he could use the card
.

Another change of name, man? Just when I accustomed to the previous one... :-D

Haha, yeah, Blackace's branding just hit me as stale the other day, and I go by this for a project I'm working on/been it on twitter/steam for a little while now, so I figured why not. Consolidate things some more.

Final change. I promise ;)

I just feel the need to throw my heartfelt support behind all the Natsume voice love. Her voice is so transcendentally wonderful, I kind of feel like I don't want the actress to voice any more characters for fear of diluting its glory. The idea of applying that voice to characters that aren't as wonderful as Natsume just seems so wrong.

Basically what I'm saying is, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun S2 WHEN.

I know that feeling. Hearing VA's voice other characters does diminish the other ones that you enjoyed a little, bit--When I focus on it; I try not to.

Also, that S1 ending was woefully anti-climatic. I'm mad I stayed up all night finishing it.

You had weird progressions of character, then regressions of character, and inconclusive bits that felt like plain carrot hanging. I enjoyed it, a lot, but it definitely fell trap to the usual shoujo/josei trappings after the intro eps.

Why so harsh, might as well drop it...You dont like the characters singing the Ending songs?

The characters singing the ED might be okay if Tamaki wasn't singing it. Her faux-little girl voice is grating enough as she's hurriedly trying to baby-talk her way through her dialogue but sung it sounds positively criminal.

I had dropped this show, but everyone said there was a kickass fight two episodes later, so I jumped back on for that. Now I don't know why I'm still watching it. I guess in the vain hope there's another one? Because the plot is reprehensibly stupid, CG mecha have never looked worse, character design is Hirai, and with Tamaki shitting up the ED even the music has taken a terrible hit.

It's a damn shame that the undisputed worst of the three mecha shows that started this spring is the one that's still running.

Utena 30

Can any men here bake a cake? If not, you'll never have Utena's heart. I'm sorry, Anime-Gaf.

I was a little surprised how much screen time Akio finally got. Akio X Utena? No. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Utena, stay true to your prince who is trapped in a dungeon somewhere!

Kiniro Mosaic 5

Shino's inexplicable meido outfit was a bit...odd. :lol Other than that, the backstory on Yoko was nice, and Isami having some screen time was nice as well.

Kitakubu 4

The 4th wall breaking jokes just keep getting more and more intense.
Botan being mosaic'd was hilarious. :lol
Still a really enjoyable, if not terribly formulaic, CGDCT show.

Ehhh to be fair, they found hope in the name of the SUN NAMED MOON. That and in regards to "A Path" there was a gap of time between its first appearance and the second time it was used. 3 times I've counted so far.

I just sorta thought the song was kinda cheesy. But I guess cheesy cheery songs are exactly what the all-depression-all-the-time world of Mega Man Sins needs.

Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou/Day Break Illusion Episode 5: So this week we have greedy little Ginka and her day in the limelight and indeed she has bit of a downer backstory but that was lacking a bit in the loss department compared to the other girls. A feat which is sadly fixed here , though Ginka takes it all well into stride, maybe a little too into stride given the event unfolding, but still she is unrelenting in the mission to eliminate Damonicas . Also I think a restraining order is needed for the Tendo Sisters, they sem to have fixation on touching Akari.

Watamote: Episodes 1-4

So far my initial impressions are, "Wow that girl is really really friggin' creepy." I like her. She's almost so creepy that it's cute. The same way that pugs are so ugly that they're almost cute... almost. But what really steals the show is her little brother and her old friend. They are definitely way better characters than she is.

This is one of those shows where it's almost unbearable to watch but at the same time I want more of it. I will keep watching it for sure.

She is the most adorable creeper ever no lie. A wonderful ball of hateful loathing.

I'll be leaving for a week long trip tomorrow, and I need some suggestions for a short series to watch during that time that I might like.

I already have Cat Planet Cuties on my list Hito, you don't have to mention it.

Have fun Chet! Cat Planet cuties will definitely appeal to you :D

Definitely. The show is a really good study of how people react to the end of the world. The best part is that all that "GOTTA SURVIVE" and "INTER TRIBE MECHANICS" noise that bogs say, The Walking Dead, is gone 'cuz nobody is surviving this. The world itself is dead.

This sounds like a Saikano sort of scenario. Minus the whole cute girl being turned into a deadly weapon of war thing.

Let's Play! Suite Precure: Whatever the heck this movie was called

Ugh... Computer locked up 3/4 the way through, lost about 30 minutes worth of watching time getting it up and running again. Gotta love older computers.

Anyway,
Besides the entire miracle light stuff, it was alright. Cool seeing a new power up, and having the stakes ramped up from a normal episode.

They were always bad. I dont really see the appeal of that particular show that makes it hugely popular but w/e.

I warned you lot about Love Lab yonks ago. You didn't listen and now you're suffering for it.

Wasnt it known that this was a show about girls trying to figure out how to find love or dates or whatever? It was never yuri to begin with.

Went through the second volume of Crime Edge and as usual, there's no more crappy filter, blood is untouched, the censorship of Iwai is next to nonexistent and there's more… uh, "golden stuff".

Golden stuff is really whats ruining anime. Like who the fuck has that fetish? Most stuff is alright but that is wholly unnecessary.

So I finally finished the first two Bakemonogatari novels and started on Kizumonogatari! Yaaaaaaay!

...I'm on page 19 and this novel has already devoted like two and a half pages to describing a pantyshot. Oh, NisioisiN. Never change.

This so hard. Natsume is a goddess whose voice and character is just too good to use elsewhere except more Tonari. And yet I want her to be in EVERYTHING.

Well I dunno, not cheery then. Just upbeat? I dunno, I don't ever pay attention to its lyrics passed the first line.

Upbeat, yep. Anyway, the first time it was used (episode 8) provides enough imagry to get something out of it. There is some repetition in the full song though.

Holy shit I never saw this.

Aside from the general level of ugly in Jormungand, I found comic deformation/anime faces to be really intrusive. I've no idea how rough it is in Rozen Maiden though.

Compare the regular expressive designs:

to

I've also no real idea why this still bothers me. :lol Guess I was hoping the show just wouldn't need that sort of crutch.

I would have to agree that sometimes SD faces for comedic effect do not fit a show. If done well its not a dealbreaker but it does hurt more serious shows.

What's the draw of the Horizon anime? I only know of it via terrible LN covers.

I have no idea either.

So, is anyone else seeing these

on their Cowboy Bebop BD (Episode 2 around 17:39)? It's only for a split-second but it's pretty ugly.

And yall complained about the Pendrum blurays...

Ah to be an early adopter. The joy of cheap BD production.

I know that feel >_>
