which he should have ALL THE TIME!
Wait I forget, how much freedom/money did he have in Penguindrum?
I'm sure he had the freedom, even if he didn't always have the money (was it episode 10? That might just be a Gotoh thing). Penguindrum is not as abstract as Utena, last episode aside.

Well... that was something. An episode full of constant flashbacks, fast forwards, and out-of-the-blue talk and explanations.

Because:

2)It does a piss poor job of retelling the show
Well, it's not trying to tell the same events so much as the same themes. I do think the more abstract nature of the film makes it very difficult to enjoy (I hated it on my first watch, it's now one of my favourite films ever and omg those colours).

Visually its very good. My beef is just that, if I hadn't watched the TV show, it would have made no sense at all. Having seen the TV show, the best approach was to view it as a sequel instead of a retelling, but mostly because that's how I've been treating Rebuild.

But it doesn't work as a sequel, either, because by somehow connecting the two you are retconning the ending of the television show through Anthy and Utena's characters being back to square one. You should treat them as alternate universes if it really bothers you.

I dunno, this was just too simplistic for me to find it very entertaining. Very rarely did it feel particularly funny or engaging in any way that stood out, which isn't helped by the show's visuals to be the bare passable minimum. It's not really out there enough to be a parody, but at the same time it doesn't feel authentic or genuine enough to be taken seriously.

Trust me, it's genuine.

Think of it as something totally seperate with similar themes and such appearing. Like G Gundam compared to other Gundam continuities.

It felt more disturbing than comedic. How much focus is it going to put on the comedy?

Oh, that's what you meant?

Well, it's kind of a black comedy. You laugh at Tomoko's awkward antics, then you get depressed when you realize it isn't that far from the truth for people with severe social anxiety. That's about the gist of the whole series.

I can see that from watching, It's the impression of people saying how hilarious it was that threw me off. There were a few funny moments, but it was more sad/disturbing than laugh out loud funny.
