Christmas themed episode. I gotta say this was by far one of the funniest episodes for this first season. They are on a roll. It's nice to see Akarin get at least a little attention this episode and some appreciation. Let's keep going!
Kinda sucks for Akatsuki. Buying all those flowers for Alicia, only to see her with her own gondola full of roses (though who didn't see that coming, come on dude), and then having her think they were for Akari and then rowing away and the roses all falling into the water. Was pretty though.
I actually enjoyed it. The animation is CLAMP, yes, but I liked the zaniness of it. I suppose you can put that in quotes, but I dunno. I mean, I enjoyed Blood-C so much that I was excited to watch The Last Dark.
I tried to watch Berserk, but it was a little TOO grimdark and I only made it maybe 10 minutes in.
Decided to go to FMA Brotherhood. I'm guessing there is a series with backstory prior to this? Everything seems to be explained fairly well though. There wasn't anything which made me scratch my head too much.

Oh nice. I am actually watching the dub too. I watched it subbed first a while back but I got the Toradora Blu-rays a few weeks ago and the dub is pretty great. Really happy with it.

Awwwww. Really wanted you to watch the OG FMA. :,(
But it's cool. Brotherhood is good too but as I've told people before the beginning is slow. I still believe that the original FMA is better paced than Brotherhood.
I am hoping that the fifth season, or even the fourth OVA, of Minami-ke could be announced later this year being the manga's tenth anniversary. Probably won't happen until at least volume 14 of the manga is available though to have plenty of material to adapt, and volume 12 is just being released this Wednesday.
Lol. Once again the intro was amazing. No Akarin this episode makes me sad but it made for a great joke at the beginning. The whole
twin
thing didn't pay off as well as they probably thought it would.

Yeah. FMA probably would've been a better choice to go with. If it's your first time with FMA, when in doubt, just watch the original.
Naw Brotherhood is the better choice as it actually follows the manga and stays true. And the original butchered the manga's ending. So for someone new to the series Brotherhood is the way to go as the pay-off is worth it.

High quality dubs are the bees knees. The alterations to the script (such as changing "This is a duel of fate" ==> "IT'S TIME TO DUEL") are the reasons why I will occasionally watch dub over sub.
I was super happy with the Part-timer dub for similar reasons.
I guess I "liked" it initially but I've developed more appreciation for it over time. There's some legit good animation so not all of its appeal lies in irony, at the very least.
Plus the original had better OP's. And most grievous of all, the beginning of each episode in Brotherhood doesn't have the iconic Al intro....
"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return
To obtain something of equal value must be lost
That is Alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange
In those days we really believed that to be the worlds One and Only Truth."
Sagebu 5
A con for the first part, Superhuman Urara for the second part and the ultimate moral dilemma for part 3. The ED is so enjoyable for this show.

Berserk is not for the faint of heart, The Golden Age Arc goes to some fucked up shit. But it's still considered among the top manga of all times.
FMA Brotherhood doesn't go over the backstory as linearly as the original series. They should go over the backstory pretty soon-ish though, but over-all they go much faster over it that the first anime.
Decided to give this a look after firehawk12 made the claim that it was a show that both of us could support. If you know firehawk12 and myself, that's a bold statement to make! First episode was really enjoyable. The main leads seem interesting enough, the purity is present, and the visuals are godly.

Just because something follows the manga doesn't mean it's automatically better. Point given, pacing is not as good as the original. While Brotherhood certainly has a "better" ending, the original FMA ending isn't bad. (Especially considering the manga wasn't finished that that point)
I would say if someone is new to the series they should watch OG FMA first and then Brotherhood. I would say it would make them appreciate Brotherhood more for its slight differences.
I just hate the idea that if something doesn't follow the original source material then it's automatically inferior to something that is faithfully adapted.

The original is good but it's not as great as Brotherhood. And for people who haven't seen the series it's better for them to watch the adaption that clearly follows the story that the Author structured. Which is why I also feel a bit disappointed for Tokyo Ghoul's adaption as it doesn't follow the manga in the way it was structured. But that's my opinion, though I mean you could still watch the original as a standalone.
So, before I lay this series the rest of the way to bed, I wanted to take a minute to talk about one of my favorite parts of it. Early on, Yurika Misumaru, the titular Nadesico's captain, wonders what her role as captain is on a largely autonomous battleship. Ruri Hoshino, the resident brainiac, responds that originally captains were older men who could inspire their crews, but with advances in battleship technology, they had become more and more simply young, sexy people for whom crews could pine, rather than fear and be inspired by.
It should be no surprise that Martian Successor Nadesico is commenting on the state of affairs in anime at this moment, since the show dedicates a fair amount of time to doing precisely that. (From Akito's speech about last minute resurrections being a sham to Akatsuki's quip about anime in which both sides have just reasons for fighting
Both being subverted when the Admiral comes back from the dead anyway and when Akatsuki's reasons for his own actions are shown to be selfish and ambitious
), but I hadn't ever really considered this particular line as relative to the progression of Captains in anime.
I confess I'm not much of an expert on this subject, but I kind of see the point Nadesico's making here. In older anime I've watched, the captain usually looks like this:
Now, obviously the law isn't ironclad, and the examples I've provided are more indicators of a progression of visual trends than of actual competence of the captains, since I think that Tessa does a splendid job as Captain of her sub (note: FMP came out after MSN so it doesn't figure in much anyway, I guess.). And of course, their are exceptions to even the time of all this. I mean look at this guy:
But the point of Bright is to be young and incompetent at first, and to grow into the role. All the same, what I really like is that Nadesico points this out and then decides to give Yurika hell for it for the rest of the series. At first brush she's everything wrong with an anime captain: A spacey, flighty young woman who is annoyingly talented, allegedly intelligent, and more often than not too busy trying to fuck her best pilot to notice that things are going batty onboard her own ship. What I love about Yurika, though, is that at the moments when nobody expects anything more than this of her, she often proves to be every bit as worthy a captain as her bearded predecessors. When her own father is attempting to commandeer her vessel, Yurika promptly makes an enemy of the entire Earth Forces to defend her crew. When Akatsuki thinks to manipulate her into surrendering the ruins to him, Yurika begins to fire upon them in an effort to end the war herself. At frequent points she manages to outwit enemies who underestimate her specifically because she's a flighty young woman.
In a very real sense, Yurika is the main attraction of Nadesico. It's her ship, and she owns it. When her crew dies, she feels it, and when they're in danger she steps up to the plate to save them. Though young and occasionally rash, Yurika is also remarkably level-headed at times (like when she opted to be left behind by Akito until he could reach the ship and bring back a rescue for her.) I don't really know or think that the show is out to make a huge statement, but I do appreciate how much effort goes into proving that despite her appearance, Yurika is a capable captain and not just eye-candy on the bridge for the sake of an added curve.

That's honestly because I feel the original is better. That's right I said it. It's better paced, has better openings, has the original Al intro for each episode and has MORE Mustang than Brotherhood. Come at me! Brotherhood wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for the original, successful FMA.
I can't recommend reading the manga over watching either the show or the movies enough. While the movies have good visuals at points, nothing compares to how amazing the manga drawings are
I need you to back that statement up because my understanding was that the original started with the manga but deviated due to it catching up with the manga at the time. And that the manga was popular enough by itself outside of the anime. Brotherhood probably got made because people saw an opportunity to adapt a very popular property that spread to the west. Correlation =/= causation.
I think I might recommend people just watch episodes 5 and 6 of Knights of Sidonia. This is comedy gold. Though everything up until this point might be necessary for the full effect.

I think my memories of the original series (especially the first few arcs) helped me appreciate FMA:B more, since I didn't really need much introduction to the characters and the broader world. I know some people have complained about FMA:B glossing over some early arcs (which I chalked up to being a result of the first anime existing).

I understand it's the original manga but if FMA failed do you really think Bones in 2009/2010 would've said "hey that one anime that failed back in 2003/2004? Let's try that again except with a few different story tweaks."
