What a damn waste tho, with those gag character designs -__-
To me, they work pretty well contrasted against the adult designs, particularly the (manga spoilers)
White Whistles
. Drives home that the adults really are exploiting little kids as expendable labor in the abyss.

Interesting episode, Akko making more progress but still not at the level she and the others want her to be at. Good that she realized her past is important but didn't expect her to straight up attack after declining the offer lol. Nonetheless, seems like the overarching plot is moving forward with the collecting of words for the staff and the history of the nine witches with that glimpse of one witch in particular.

Geez. When people get deleted, it's like a light switch being flicked on and off momentarily, before they're just gone...

Slowly disappearing into light is horrifying if you don't know what happens next.

I especially love the speech she gives.

First thing that episode made me think of lol. Otherwise I really enjoyed the first 13 episodes.

bad exposition is bothering me more and more. It's taking me out of shows whenever it happens vs just being a nuisance. Why do writers feel the need to have a character walking in and tell me his life story on a regular fucking day of work.

So you're finally learning, aren't you?

Do you remember? It's been almost four years since you came to these threads. It took you some time, but you've grown into one of the most frequent posters here. All the puns and memes you post help make AnimeGAF what it is today. Seeing you finally growing jaded with normal anime tropes as a veteran poster makes me proud.

AnimeGAF has changed so much over the years. As I'm sure you already know, so many posters have come and gone. The List, monocles and mustaches, arguments about deconstructions, bathroom analysis... all these things used to make this community what it was. Yet as time goes on, and the makeup of the community changes, people start to forget how things used to be.

I just hope that nothing disturbs this peace we've fought so hard to obtain...

AnimeGAF may change, its posters may come and go, and its memes, injokes, and its general tolerance for the various idiosyncrasies of the medium may vacillate, but K-On will always suck.

All of a sudden the show just decided it needed to do infodump after saying almost nothing for the first two episodes, lol.

Now, if it was up to me, MD Geist would be required viewing for joining Gaf.

In fact, it would required viewing every two months, and posters would have to write up what it makes them feel watching it every time.

Lol I can see why but yeah it's been really enjoyable so far, was wondering how I would feel about it after glancing at some disappointment but it's been great.

My goal for 2018 is to be able to recognize directors and staff more readily. So I can know preemptively if something is trash, as I am.

First step will be to find whatever the anime equivalent of IMDB is. Anime database?

ANN's DB s flawed but probably the best thing we have in English.

It's short, it's fun, it doesn't have stupid fanservice... I like it! After having watched the first six episodes earlier today I'm wondering why I didn't notice it earlier, since it's actually pretty decent.

Kakegurui 2

Man, this is good. Yuichiro Hayashi really is a highly skilled director. I like how he stages the fourth-wall breaks when the "villain" of the episode explains how they cheated to the audience before Jabami turns the tables on her. Last episode involved theatrical asides:

And this episode had the opponent actually get up and walk around during her explanation while the rest of the world was frozen in black-and-white:

These kinds of techniques serve to heighten the artificiality of the setting and thus intensify the dramatic action taking place. These characters, with their extreme personalities and extreme faces, feel larger than life.

(Except Suzui. He feels really out of place at this academy, but because of that he's able to serve as a sort of everyman avatar for the audience, a single thread to connect this crazy world to some semblance of reality.)

Hmm... not sure what to think. I'm back. Does this mean it's war now???

Wakfu Season 1 (Le French Animu)

I found this show from my curiosity of giving some of the more well known french animation titles a try, and little did I expect that I'd be watching the french version of Avatar (or a shonen action show).

The show has a strange animation style as somebody who has primarily watched eastern animation when it comes to action. And yes, that's including Avatar. Character designs weren't the issue, that's just an artistic choice. But the show seems to be animated in this fashion that, after seeing some CGI from the anime industry, never quite stops looking like it. Hard to point my finger at what it is. The show looked gorgeous many times and the battles were always a feast for the eyes, so don't take that as a negative. Here's some gifs showcasing some animation if anybody is curious

I ended up searching for it and discovered that Ankama Studios did this show in Flash. And that doesn't really say much because we've seen so many varying degrees of what Flash can do in the right hands. But I guess that answered my question that it isn't CG, it probably has to do more with the plain art style when it comes to characters that sometimes makes you think it was done with CG models I guess.

Moving on to the show itself, I want to reiterate that it reminded me so much of Avatar season 1. That's both a good and bad thing. On the positive side I compare the two because western animated tv shows don't get fantasy shows with huge battles often made. That's a market entirely dominated by anime with shonen action. So when we do get a fantasy show with epic battles made in the West it's a treat. The bombastic fights in both this and Avatar were super fun and definitely one of the bigger highlights.

The show's first season biggest weakness, and hey Book 1 of the last airbender's too, is that the first half of the show is fucking plagued by throwaway borderline episodic episodes that don't really feel like they bring ANYTHING to the table besides showing the adventures of the crew as a way to have them bond. The problem is that even when they first join, you never really feel a purpose they are all together besides the flimsiest of excuses. To be fair by the second half and particularly by the end there are genuine reasons you grow to care for their little band of tofu, but the characters act all nonchalant about it to start it literally felt like a couple of kids were playing Dungeons and Dragons, created their characters gave a 2 minute lecture on their character and how badass it is, and then the Dungeon Master proceeded to just throw them in the same town together as a group of adventurers that happen to want to travel together. And I'm not even going to mention the fucking 3 parter soccer arc where the leads do nothing but play this world's version of soccer to get some cash. Just why.

The other negative I'll mention is that as many shows aimed at kids/teens with fantasy battle (shonen action), the women characters feel almost like they are there primarily to fill a quota of having tough ladies and for eye candy/romance. Evangeline is the den mother of the group and as usual she is immediately paired off with the goofball, as is common. Her, and Amalia by extent, are for the most part given the roles you wouldn't be surprised: the elf ranger and the earth magic princess. I'll give credit where it's due where there wasn't fan service outright, so you can at least rest easy in that regard.

I want to give props to the show over the villain. Not sure if he comes from the game itself or if he's entirely written for the show, but this motherfucker oozes fucking awesome.

I don't know who in the studio thought "hey why don't we make the villain this fucking human sized iron giant looking android with fucking time powers who acts insane and can also summon this fucking Kingdom Hearts sword?" and then they also gave him hints of Roy Batty from Bladerunner, but BRA-FUCKING-VO because jesus christ that was great.

I finished the show like 1 hour ago and absolutely cannot wait to jump into season 2. I've seen gifs of some of the battles in that and if I'm reading correctly, season 2 might as well be a Book 2 of the last air bender where they (hopefully) drop the filler-level episodes and just get better written smaller arcs. I watched season 1 in the original French dub and it was great, but I'm curious to give a try to the english and Japanese in the first couple of episodes to see if there is one I prefer over the other.

I would recommend this maybe not to everyone, but if you enjoy battle shonen you have nothing to lose I guess, particularly with not much airing to satiate that thirst. Just keep in mind my complaints over the first half of the season and probably skip throughout the weaker episodes if need be until you get to the meaty plot. Which is honestly probably from the point they finally reach the island.

I give season 1 a 7/10. Without the weaker episodes to bring it down, maybe an 8/10.

If you're curious to watch it, and you're in the US, it's fairly simple just search for it on Netflix.

Feels damn good to be back. Action feels a little more ambitious and I'm hoping we get more of that sick creature design as that's one area the show's been deficient since the beginning.

The whole "Say intimidating line; ridiculous overreaction" schtick that Kakegurui runs is actually really grating to me. As soon as someone drops their tone of voice I know exactly what is going to happen next. Kind of kills the tension in the scenes.

Probably because I'm not used to watching shows in French and can't gauge good voice acting in that language, but mother of God am I liking Wakfu more in English. So thank you people who crowdfunded the english dub lol. Tres bien.

I never in my life would have thought there would be Star Trek V: The Final Frontier gifs.
