Sunset overdrive gives me old Sega vibes. Fun!

Gamer79

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
Sega use to have a fun an aesthetic look their games. Sonic adventure, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, etc. Overly colorful, overly loud. Overly fun!

I slipped the xbone and XSeries generation so I missed this game. I recently picked it up on steam and had to double take became it brought me back to the good old days where FUN was the most important aspect of a game. It's made by a talented developer in insomniac studios.

Grinding on rooftops, shooting tons of badies, over the top story that does not take itself seriously, upgradeable abilities, unlockable abilities/weapons, fun atmosphere, giant bosses, and plays at 4k 120fps.

If you just want a good time, play this fucking game!

Absolutely incredible game. I never understood why it didn't get more praise, one of my favorite games of the decade.

It's beautiful, even today, and like you said, it's incredibly fun. The game is really designed around FUN. There is nothing tedious in the game, even doing the 100% completion by doing all the challenges and finding all the collectibles was fun in this game, while it's something I usually find tedious.

It's pure arcade fun, satisfying gameplay. If you like old style arcade, scoring etc, you should love this game. It's also the best traversal gameplay in any open world in my opinion.

I'd also recommend trying it with keyboard and mouse if you're not against that. The game REALLY benefits from playing it with the mouse, it really unlocks the gameplay on a whole new level, being able to do quick turns, aim more easily while moving etc, it makes the game faster paced and make the gameplay more rich and fun.

Even the DLC was super cool, adding the water gameplay to the game. Absolutely love this game.

Agreed. Love this game as well. Ashamed we never got a sequel and the IP is pretty much dead. Played all the dlc and loved every minute of it. One of Xbox One’s best games of last gen.

Never cared for the game. But checking the wiki, I didnt know it reviewed well in the low 80s. I dont think it's the type of game people care about unless someone is a Jet Set Radio fan who wants to shoot enemies too.

That's more like end of Sega vibes. Now Sega Genesis, there was an aesthetic:

Once they got rid of the sexy black grid and started shipping red cardboard boxes... well the writing was on the wall for ol' Sega:

What I'm trying to say is... Sunset Overdrive was pretty okay but I got bored of it halfway through and never picked it back up. No ragrets.

Picked it up on PC a couple of years ago and had a blast with it. Very fun gameplay and traversal with an over the top story made it so much fun to play. You could see Insomniacs trademark style with all the wacky weapons you could acquire. Felt like Ratchet and Clank on steroids. One of the best games of last gen. Criminally underrated.

One of the most fun games I've ever played. Loved the traversal, the gun variety, and the silly story. Shame that Insomniac is wasting away their creativity on Marvel slop.
Yeah I think the traversal was a lot more fun than in Spider-Man actually.

The thing is, Spider-Man will look more "impressive" because it's very scripted and automated. You don't do much when swinging, and Spider-man will have tons of beautiful animation to adapt to any kind of obstacle etc... so it does look really nice, but gameplay wise, it's pretty boring if you're someone who likes to have real fun with traversal gameplay.

Sunset Overdrive is kind of the opposite. I mean it's not hard to move around by any mean, but if you want for it to look good, you have to make it look good by moving around correctly. It's a game where you need to be someone who loves to move around and have fun, to make it look fun. It's a bit like how even something like Devil May Cry can look very slow and boring depending on who's playing it.

When I looked at Sunset Overdrive gameplay before playing it, I didn't expect to find it this fun, because in most videos it's always slow and boring, since most people only do the bare minimum required by the missions, and don't try to do anything with style and fun. If you play sunset overdrive like Dead rising with grinds, it can be quite boring, but if you like moving around and use everything the game offers, and make your own fun with that, it's incredible.

Because of that, it's quite more niche and not as attractive for many people.

Underated game with clever trailer and marketing about 'cover' shooters. I can see how it might feel abit like a Sega game, without the Japanese charm, polish or coolness of Jet Set Radio.

I think I like it more in theory than execution. I keep coming back to it once in a few years thinking that "hey, now it will click for me" and it never does - I have fun for a few moments and then move to something else. It is clearly my problem, not the game's.

I consider the game barely a 7, traversal is the only good part but not even great (a bit too slow formy taste).

Story, characters, enemy design and variety, location and level of challenge are all mediocre to bad and the weapons are just ratchet reskinned weapons.

Its cool.

But mechanically not very good. It needed more work on gameplay and should allow player to freely aim in air.

I prefer Suicide Squad KTJL.
You can "aim freely" though. What are you talking about? Do you mean that you did more damage when you were shooting while grinding?

I see the re-evaluation of the XB games you all said were shit on release is happening in earnest because there's a whiff it might come out on the PS.

Like clockwork.

This was always one of the best games last gen and one of the best exclusives on the XB1.

I don’t have a PS.

But I criticise if game falls short.

Its not made to be played while aiming freely. Enemies come from all directions and its much more efficient to let auto aiming work.

In Suicide Squad, I find control to be superior. Enemies are located at set places so you know manoeuvres needed to reach them. Feels more polished gameplay.

I have fond memories of JGR on my dreamcast, Great write up, then I saw the video. Does not look fun at all at least not from that clip.

Nah, it never clicked with me. Have tried it multiple times. And I just can't stand its way of trying to be "cool". Play Bomb Rush Cyberfunk instead. That's the Jet Set Radio 3 we haven't seen yet.

Really fun game. Wish they had made a sequel and improved and expanded on what made it so fun. Essentially a Tony Hawk shooter with a fun art direction and punk style. Very cool for it's time.

The gameplay was fun, felt like a mix between Crackdown and Ratchet.
But the story, characters and style were a bit off putting. Insomniac games tend to have this poor writing where they desperately try to be funny but it just doesn't really hit very often.
IMO Hi Fi Rush was going for a similar style of humor but actually nailed it

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Game is cool for sure but it ended up feeling boring to me, too repetitive maybe.

Totally agree OP.

Hi-Fi Rush gives off the same feeling

Oh yeah, game felt like it should have come out on the Dreamcast lol. Very good game for sure, OP should check it out.

I mean... There's no mission or anything in that clip, just moving around, if you don't like traversal mechanics in games, then yeah I can understand why this wouldn't do anything to you. But Sunset Overdrive has a MUCH better gameplay, motion, and traversal than Jet Set Radio, by far, I played both and... yeah 😅

Really tried getting into this game on the Xbone. Liked it enough but the way old neogaf would go on about it, you’d think this game was an all timer. It’s honestly one of the most overrated games I’ve played. Not saying it’s no good, just a highly overrated game.

That's why I qualified my comment with from that clip thanks though I'll give it a try.

it was the main reason I got an Xbox One back in the day.

it really was that Dreamcast era vibe that I loved. also I just like shooters, platformers and trend sport games. and this is a mix of all of those

I was big hyped at the time to play it, because Insomniac was my favorite developer during PS/PS2 days, and I haven't played one of their games since Ratchet Deadlocked. So I couldn't' wait to see what one of my fav devs had been up to over the years.

Well, I thought the game was incredibly ugly, and the city kind of boring. At the time it was the worst writing in games I had ever played, never would've guessed it'd become industry standard lol. The gameplay had some really fun parts, but it wasn't engaging enough. Like combat felt brainless, it was shoot and grind nonstop. You don't really have any sort of encounters that require high thought or planning. All in all though, even though I have a lot of bad to say about it, I think it's decent enough anyone even slightly interested should give it a try and decide for themselves.

Weird, why? Even today it's one of my favorite looking games. It's really rare to have cartoon / colorful games like this in single player AAA games, usually it's only in multiplayer games and such. I really love the look of the game as far as I'm concerned.

I really wanted to play this, but the controls completely ruined the experience for me. Didnt feel anywhere as good as TH or JSR to play, unfortunately.

The weapons look like they were designed by an adult hyped up on sugar and every surface in the city is a trampoline for no reason. The plot? Oh yeah, totally riveting, if you’re into helping NPCs find their dumb dog while mutant soda zombies try to kill you. it’s like the devs said what if Tony Hawk, but crack? (I love sunset overdrive)
