The screen tearing at like, 14 minutes made me do a double take.

Yeah it got pretty bad, especially at the top of the screen, though I'm not 100% sure that was the game seeing as Matt said nothing about it and it was really noticeable

I meant for that to be a question mark, oops. Which version do you think is better? Also, did you play with a Move?

Ah sorry, I think the Wii version is better the motion controls are far more responsive and it feels better to play, I played the PS3 version with move and a dualshock and it's not great either way, the added content and HD visuals are nice but it's not what I'd call an improvement it just didn't feel good to play

Also the Urope version of the wii version is censored which made no difference to me but it's worth noting I guess

I just skimmed through the last few pages and all I can say is damn.

Could you tell me if I would like it? Like, fill in these blanks.

If you liked ________ then you will like this game.

If you like hard but fair JRPGs with cool monsters that come from mythology then you'll like SMT4.

Never got a move, but I remember the PS3 equivalent to Wii Sports (IDK the title) had a super fun game with swords with the move. It was way better than Wii Sport's fencing or kendo.
I remember a video of a dude just playing the sword fighting game in the dark like he was the biggest badass in the calculus club.

Do you like unforgiving RPGs? The combat is something I love, the lack of defense makes fights end either in a total victory or a total defeat and usually fairly quickly too, there are no 30 minute boss battles here
You'll change your tune.

Probably but the way people were talking it sounded like Satan incarnate.

I'm interested in this too.
I burned out so hard on Strange Journey I'm scared to even try another SMT.

... oh, the grinding... the gdamn grinding...

You know, I can understand Liam not wanting to post in here due to waifu bullshit, but it's not like 4chan is waifu war free. It's a lot worse there then it is here.

I'm interested in this too.

Most people I've talked to have said that SJ is one of the hardest SMT games. I don't think SMT4 is at that level.

Strange Journey is a lot rougher, it's more a callback to the original dungeon crawl NES SMT games. SMT3: Nocturne and SMTIV are far more accesible, and I like them a lot more.

It was really enjoyable honestly, but yeah you could just listen to it while doing whatever

But it's a video. There needs to be something to watch, not just listen to. Which is why Pat's was my favorite, because he took a serious approach and gave good commentary about the game but he had great game footage as well (the DP part was hilarious).
Also him singing was rad

If Liam's had gameplay footage, it would've been more well rounded.

I don't remember where he said this, but Liam wanted to add gameplay and had some recorded. But when he went to render the video, it was going to take much too long and had to get rid of it. I do agree that it would have been much better with the gameplay, though.

Considering the rendering problems he had with the PS experience lets watch, that doesn't surprise me, and it's what I figured. Liam really needs a new tower.

Liam hates our guts confirmed!

But it's weird, since the last few days we have been relatively on topic outside some downtime between parts. Well at much on topic that we can be with 2 EP a day that not everyone is going to get to at the same time.

Yeah but.... how much grinding does SMT4 make you do? Cause... I can't do that again.
SJ makes you do so much grinding.... so much grinding, especially in the latter half
that's how they get you

I'll need a couple years more recovery time before I play a jrpg with required grinding again, I'm sorry to say.

To be fair I think Liam's was the best overall, sure there was no footage but he made it blatantly clear that it was a subjective list when he ranked TLoU saying that objectively had few faults but still wasn't his favorite game. Pat's was great too but Liam actually made me buy a game sooo....

Just get the exp/app/macca dlc that gives you the stuff. I did and it cut out a lot of grinding for me

That's what I was saying, everyone's freaking out with the weirdest timing just because Pat said that, but lately it's been better than it has been in a long time.

Presentation problems are seperate from content ones. Liam had some amazing content, and some people value it more than others.

Of all places I expected Liam to talk to fans, I didn't expect 4chan.

I don't think it's weird that he posts there. I'm pretty sure he lurks on /v/ and /a/.

As long as you play the game correctly you won't need to grind in SMT4. Another option is for you to play DDS which is one of the easier MegaTen games. Speaking of DDS, I should continue playing that.

That's fair but the gameplay footage was hardly the meat of the videos, but whatever floats your boat.

Liam I wish your list had more of this:

I don't know why. 4chan is a great place for conversation. You have the new guys (not using 4chan vernacular, for obvious reasons) trying to shit it up, but if you got thick skin, it's a good way to connect to fans.

I think it more so just gave people an excuse to bring up things that they are getting tired of or want to change.

By the way, if unclear, I loved Liam's list personally. Presentation is nice to have, but he nailed the content.
A bit more than I'd like it to. That being said, I don't mean that because the game necessitates it, as I've never felt the need to ever grind. It's just that the game loves putting enemies in tight corridors and loves to never give you a decent flee rate, regardless of the difference in level.

So the best option is to quickly fight them to continue, which after a while gets really fucking frustrating and feels like the game is throwing enemies in my face and forcing me to "grind".
I really like that actually, it reminds me of Chrono Trigger in a way, where playing the game normally basically gets you to the right level.
I think it more so just gave people an excuse to bring up things that they are getting tired of or want to change.
That makes a lot more sense.

Considering you have to keep fighting an unnecessary amount of enemies to continue, I consider that grinding in a way. It's not exactly the standard definition of the word, but I would certainly not fight these enemies if I could.

The game is fucking easy. You will never have to willingly grind.

You can always just negotiate with them instead of fleeing.

That takes even more time, it doesn't help that the tight corridors make it a pain to walk around in. Combined with the fact that their is no waypoints or even city titles on the bottom map making completing quest a nightmare without basic knowledge of the area.

If you guys don't know this, if you scout a demon you already have, it automatically ends the fight or results in a gift.

Yup, I found that out pretty early. I don't do it much due to the lack of EXP but it's good for when I don't feel like fighting

I've lurked mainly on 4chan just to see what the big deal is and I don't see anything I couldn't find on GAF or Reddit.

The lingo also is very abrasive and not welcoming at all if you're not familiar with it.

Not always, plus you can get far more EXP out of talking that killing

Also, if there's an enemy up ahead that you don't want to fight then you just have to wait a bit and it'll disappear.
This works on the overworld too, and is the only way to avoid those fights.

I like being able to dodge encounters on the 3rd person view and get first strikes, it's one of the thing it does better than Nocturne.

I'd rather just be able to fucking leave. If my main character is X levels above the demons I encounter, up the leave percentage to 100%. Negotiating takes longer than fighting, but the latter increases your level.

Scouting demons has nearly always given me more EXP than fighting and it doesn't waste any HP or MP to do so. Plus the main point of the game is that even low level enemies can hurt you significantly if you let them, fleeing always felt like a bitch thing to do if you're almost dead rather than a way to avoid fights.

Not entirely, considering you have to keep going back to certain areas frequently due to sidequests and whatnot (that is to say, going from the nearest warp point to your destination).

Also the game is already too easy.
Sidequests really are ways to get stronger/more levels for the main quest. My first playthrough I avoided almost every sidequest and preferred that difficulty curve.

SMT4 has some weird fucking difficulty though. It just gets easier and easier until the very end.

That's the thing, I'd like to avoid fighting in order to avoid EXP gain.

If fleeing was a more valid option than it is in SMT IV, the other talking options would be used less than they already are. The game gives players the option to earn money, healing, and items from a consistently available source: enemies. This isn't a typically available option in games, so it's often ignored when it can be an incredibly useful, even life-saving, option.

People say that, but that's not actually true. Certain overworld scrubs become mostly insignificant. I've had a 60% flee rate fail on me three times in a row and the enemies I fought against still hadn't wiped me out. At that point I realized it's a way safer and faster option to kill them. Fleeing is to shorten travel time, not to escape from near death. I don't flee in Persona 3/4 because I'm sow super scared u guise, it's because I don't feel like fighting even more of the same enemies.
Here's my tip, use R to auto battle, or buy Auto Pinpoint in the App Store. The former has everyone spam attack like Persona and makes fights end in 2 seconds, the latter actually hits enemies with a weakness, if available.
So I should just completely ignore every and all sidequest from now on? I'm trying to make those the only source of exp gain, other than main quests. I like the optional battles they bring, which is why I try to do most of them.
I dunno what to tell ya, but sidequests definitely beef you up. I got my XP from the scaling of killing high level encounters.

whoops, yeah that word would've been better to use. I hope he can finally make a BestGaf sociak link. Once he reaches out to the truth.

WELCOME STRANGER! Nah, we don't have porn here.. if we did we'd get banned and locked. It's fine, don't get too fussy about it, and about the hiding part... We are already under the influence of Aaron's stand.. you already lost.

It'll be a normal day, but with Pat and if Liam joins it'd be the same.

Sorry for the late response..was shoveling ludacris amounts of snow. At least I have Kraft Dinner. Yea I know we don't have porn, but we get dangerously close to it sometimes <.<

I would actually love to talk to Liam about hunting one time.

Fleeing to shorten travel time is dumb to me. The whole idea of fleeing in reality is to avoid a fight that you would lose which makes sense in SMT to me. It's meant to be a last ditch thing you do to not die, not the fastest way to avoid combat. I don't think fleeing is meant to be used if you can win the fight basically.

I love hunting Dove and fishing. I had the chance to hop on a helicopter(Gully-Gully) to hunt boar but I didn't end up going

I REALLY want to go hunting and learn those skills, but in NYC you need a ton of licenses and gear and it ends up being super expensive to even consider it.

I fucking love hearing Matt talk about Gully-Gully's.

Is it still hunting if the hunter has the sky advantage?

That sounds good, I'll try to keep an eye out for it then. But still, it's gonna be a while before my jrpg need comes back from the dead. SJ really brutalized me.
I got all the way to the final boss fight, got wrecked, looked at a guide and found out for like the tenth time in a row that I was ten levels too low, and my entire demon team was obsolete for the boss... and gave up on the spot.
Fuck that game, seriously.

I've only hunted Deer, and I went duck hunting twice, I've gotten two deer (both delicious) and about 10 ducks? idk I got alot the two times I went (equally delicious).

Hunting is pretty simple in Ohio if it's bow season, you go get your licence get a bow and go hunting.
If you actually kill something you need a tag though and to call it in.

That sounds like a decent idea, though I hope just using R on every stupid random battle won't deplete my MP before I actually get to my destination. I'll look into that app, thanks.

Hmm, I see. Maybe I'll stop doing them then if that'll help bring the difficulty back to its normal state.

I have to say the same back. Fleeing is almost never required aside from boss fights, as the game's difficulty is not nearly high enough to make regular enemies dangerous when you opt to fighting them. However, fleeing is disabled during those fights, making it somewhat pointless. I've never once had to flee in order to avoid death. This sounds like "Hey, you shouldn't flee to avoid wasting MP/HP and your time, you should kill every single repetitive, insignificant enemy that they almost force you to fight on your way to your next destination. Either that or just wait for ten seconds for the enemy icon to disappear and then run and hope it doesn't reappear."

Maybe your just better at the game than me but I've needed to flee from fights multiple times due to enemies getting the first turn and almost killing my entire party in one turn.
