Super Best Friends Thread 6: Six Threads and a Movie

1. Gurren Lagann.
2. Neon Genesis Evangelion.
3. Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
4. Hellsing Ultimate.
5. Welcome to the NHK.
6. Samurai Champloo.
7. Kuroko no Basket.
8. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
9. Digimon.
10. Chunibyou.

Everything after the first four is kinda just whatever came to mind.

EDIT: I immediately regret everything on this list after #4.

Welcome to the NHK is still pretty good. I really like the craziness of the scenes.

I like watching the dub just to hear the awful VA pick for Kaoru.

Yep, it's nothing too bad like all their clothes ripping off. I should read more I stopped at around.. i think they got a girl with glasses to join them.. it's been. A while sincr i've read it.

I also really like the art style, it reminds me of older mangas. i want to say like Dragon ball, but there might be a manga that looks close to it.

Dragonball is exactly right, I feel like the Author must have been an assistant to Toriyama, there is a Knight later on who looks alot like a buff Android 17, the DB traits definitely show through with certain faces, yet it's not as hardcore a Toriyama style as say Dragon Quest.

If it's blatant super robots like Getter Robo or Gurren, I am immediately on board.

Anything else, well, it'll depend on the overall quality of the series. Though at this point, the easiest way I know if it's worth considering is if it's been featured in a Super Robot Wars game.

What about run of the mill normal mechas that dont power up or anything?

I was gonna ask if you would or have watched knights of sidonia. Maybe some other series, but i cant think of any.

I edited to say I regret it all, but yeah, it's more a personal thing that made me enjoy it as much as I did. Either way, that entire list would be different if I wrote it again right now.

Some of the ones after arent terrible, Welcome the NHK is a good pick, and samurai champaloo.

I told you.

At least my favorite manga are more varied, but only because the amount of mecha manga is slim to none. It's either Mazinger or Getter Robo (and the latter is still better than all of its anime adaptations).

Muv Luv visual novel has some of the sickest mecha designs I've ever seen. I mean I haven't seen Shin Mazinger yet so I can't say for sure, but its still really cool.

Minor Muv Luv spoilers unless you don't mind being spoiled to mech designs

  • Baka and Test
  • Evangelion
  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Samurai Champloo
  • Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
  • Selector Infected/Spread Wixoss
  • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
  • Gundam Wing
  • Monster
  • Nyarko-san Crawling with Love

In no particular order, and dubbed when available.

Have you watched Vandread? It's a pretty good series, and while not straight up super robot off the bat, it's pretty good and while fanservicey, has a lot of legit emotional moments.
Never heard of it before. I'll think about it, though with the other shit on my list to get through (still haven't finished Macross), it'll be a while.

It's a Gonzo show right? I watched Gravion, I could probably handle it fine.

How far did you make it into season 2? I could'nt even stomach the third episode before I left it behind and tried to pretend that there was no such thing.

I'll check out who the artist is later and maybe find if they have any connection or anything.

I kinda like this art style that makes it feel a little retro instead of the samey art style nowadays.

Oh god 4chan is so addicting jesus fucking christ.

It's stronger than the neogaf crack.

Yeah, the first two are just a poorly paced version of the series with like 30 seconds of reanimated footage. The third one is the only one you need to watch.

Actually the second movie is longer than the episodes it takes up.

I believe the first movie is episode 1-8, while the second is 9-12, which is only about 90~ minutes while the movie itself is almost 110 minutes. I believe it has new footage not in the show, so its worth seeing imo.
I have all three movies on blu ray
and its not from mylocal anime store

Check it out when you get a chance, it's a pretty legit series. Only gripe is CG mechs. But still, good show. Here's the OP just to get an idea of what it's like.

Basic concept is men and women live on different planets and are at war, then three men get stuck on a female space pirate ship and go on adventures then discover the truth of why men and women are on different planets. As dumb and anime as the concept is, it's actually pretty serious.

What season 2? What're you talking about? There's no season 2. You're crazy man.

I made it through episode 3 and stopped before it ruined a series I love.

Wait, Muv Luv is mecha? I have even less of a clue what that series is now than I ever have. I thought it was a highschool romantic comedy.

Its two visual novels.

Extra and Unlimited are the first. Alternative is the second (the sequel). Extra is SoL/Romcom, Alternative is mecha/science fiction war drama.

And unlimited is there to bridge the gap between Extra and Alternative.

Could you post a better pic? It seems a bit small.

Looks pretty big to me, hard to grab different pics since the game itself is so niche.

try this one, its from the wiki.

Is selector infected that good.. i could handle girls playing card games. Some of these are pretty specific to your tastes i assume.

Any of you lot read Liar Game?

That is the most addicting Manga I constantly forget about.

I heard good things about it. I plan to read it eventually. Too many other things to read.

Season 2 was ok but really felt different from the 1st season of funny.. it had too much of nothing and then worst when they accepted their chuunbiyou old selfs.. there wasnt even any kissing or anything.. it even failed as a romance.

I'm assuming no one cares about chuunibyou s2 spoilers?

Bleach may be of questionable quality, but I would be an artbook for it easily.

The Quincy arc hasn't been as retarded as the Aizen war arc, but it's also less interesting overall.
Bleach is fine.

Kubo spends way too much time on side battles, there's so many I really don't care about.

I heard good things about it. I plan to read it eventually. Too many other things to read.
It's basically strategy porn, and boy is it great.

I watched the first episode of Selector Spread before realizing there was a season 1 and now that I've had all of it spoiled I feel no motivation to go back or continue.

It says its 200 by 117 resolution, so it seems really tiny on my screen.

You dun goofed aaron.. for shame. You can still watch it, it's not like you spoiled everything in the first season.

All I know about Muv Luv is that JAM Project did the opening themes for Alternative, and the mecha designs remind me of Armored Core 4.

The PS3 opening for Muv Luv Alternative is the fucking GOAT. So good. If you can stomach Extra and Unlimited, I can highly recommend it. Greatest thing I've ever read.

I believe there is an alien chick and the military with Mechs try to get her or something like that.

Not even close, but decent try. I couldn't sum up Muv Luv in one sentence, but if I had to describe it, fucked would be the best way to describe it.

Really specific. I also recommend it to people who like Madoka because by the end of Infected I got a lot of Madoka vibes from the series. One thing that's bad about it is that it's a terrible piece of marketing for the associated card game due to the seriousness of the story and the viewer is never taught how to play the game.

I'll just post it as an image. Its not really a spoiler at all anyway

edit: ohhhhhh now i see it. That's really fucking weird.

Here's a link to the wiki itself which has a bunch of images. Just don't read any of the actual wiki for spoiler reasons.

It's okay Aaron, it was all just a dream. Go watch Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, it'll clear your mind and has a similar feel to some of the slice-of-life that you seem to enjoy. I forget, are you a fan of Demolition D (aka Douchebag Chocolat)? He has a review for it.

Geez, look at all this anime I never heard of. The knowledge/passion you guys have about anime kinda intimidates me. I'm too surface.

Who isn't a fan of Demo? If you aren't then you should fix that.

I'll look into it.

If I do it'll be awhile, in hopes I forget all the spoilers.

Will you really forget all the spoilers?

Hmm.. ok i'll give it another shot.
