yeah that's a bit weird looking indeed. That, and those really plain grass textures in the sunset level; everything else is so beautiful they stick out like a sore thumb

I noticed that too. Seemed out of place, art-style considering. Still, the rest of the game looks absolutely fantastic so far.

Chances are it's one of those things that appears when you die alot. I've never really minded this in 3d land or DCKR as I don't really see them that often. They're pretty much the game's way of saying "Dude you suck at this level."
