Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 missing checkerboard/dithering effect on Switch 2 (comparison inside)

Just bought the digital version of galaxy 2 digitally from Amazon Japan for £23 downloading now.. guess will see soon for myself 😜

I've just played through the first level of Galaxy 2 with Yoshi on my Switch 2. The game looks fantastic and controls well in this early part of the game.

Obviously it isn't just a pre-HD thing or something a lot of games of that era did. At the very least I see it as another example of them intentionally leaning into technical limitations for style points, just like the big random circles or leaf shapes instead of actual leaves here

Not even sure why it's hard to believe that these patterns, sometimes checkerboarding and sometimes literal weave textures, are intentional when Nintendo literally made a bunch of games with this style

Reminder Galaxy is literally a bedstime story, for that reason alone the bed sheet/plushie patterns are actually pretty fitting and not that random
Speaking of making the game look like a bedtime story, apparently they also removed the paper filter from 2's cutscenes. Not mine and haven't looked further into this so can't confirm though

I'm happy for the kids that the remasters seem to be quite playable and not a disaster though. I just wish remasters and remakes in general would respect the original games more and stop pretending graphics from back then are icky in HD, but I guess claiming "new modern graphics" helps selling copies--probably even in the worst cases

It really looks like the original went for a full-on yarn look with the rounded edges here
