Super Mario Maker: Not all tools available from the start, unlock over 9 days

This is a strange way to do it. I can understand the reasoning behind it as they might not want people to be overwhelmed but it is a Mario game. People know how the objects work by now since these games have been around for decades. They could have just locked the more advanced features behind a short tutorial to prevent being overwhelmed.
 
I think those that are trying to refute people showing displeasure are presuming that this 9 day tutorial period will somehow make each person a master level designer because of it.

I'd rather have access to all of the tools, and limit myself as I learn on the go rather than Nintendo limit me for X days. If I'm a terrible level designer day one, then I'm still likely to be a terrible level designer when I've finally unlocked all of the tools.

The only way to create decent levels is by experience, and even then, after the game has been in the wild for ages, there are going to be some really great ones, and some really terrible ones, and I doubt this 9 day limitation is going to be the deciding factor in that. It will all come down to the creativity of the user.

With all that said, after I've unlocked everything, I won't care anymore, but it will be annoying until then.
 
To be honest, when LBP has all the tools available from the get-go it can appear very daunting. However, LBP's tools are way more complex than SMM's so at the same time I feel that SMM shouldn't be spoon-feeding these to the player because the tools are so easy that figuring out what the items/elements do is the only part the player has to learn and become familiar with.

It's not like LBP where you need to learn not just what the elements do, but the tools as well. So this 9 day restriction comes off as unnecessary to me. But that's for me, personally.

For other people who haven't tried these types of games before, maybe even SMM's creation items and tools (when all at once) appear daunting to them and Nintendo wants people using the creator aspect as much as possible. And so maybe this is their way of getting people who only planned to be players to also be creators? Sounds like a stretch but that's what I see from a decision like this.

That's what I think, anyway.

Ultimately, this is in the game whether you all like it or not. I think it's an okay idea and a fine way to get gamers, new and experienced alike, all learning the game at the same pace. You all think it's the worst thing to happen to a video game in the history of video games because reasons. We'll just have to agree to disagree and you'll just have to deal with it anyway because it's in the game and there's nothing you can do about it.
 
Are the tools that will unlock over the next 9 days at least be things we haven't seen before? Like, is this a way of keeping certain things a surprise? That is literally the only thing that makes even a little bit of sense. It still doesn't make much sense, but it's something.

Alright, let's be honest, how many of you screaming how this is a dealbreaker are A. still going to buy the game anyways, or B. never planning on buying this in the first place? Because this really isn't that big of a deal.
 
This is such a stupid idea. Why 9 days? What benefit does that achieve?

I'm honestly baffled by the majority of Nintendo's decisions in the last few years buy this takes the cake.

I'd understand if the game wasn't ready or something, and they were releasing tools late or whatever.

But to put some arbitrary time limit on features, and for 9 days of all things is beyond reason.

Seriously dumb fucking decision.

We all know that Youtube and Twitch have some effect on game sales. Sometimes it's insignificant, but sometimes it's not. Streamers are going to get this game and on day one show... what? The extreme basics. Boring. Imagine if at the Nintendo World Championships, the custom levels only had day one items. I mean you don't even get the fire flower until day 2.

And what about if you show this game to your friends?

Friend: Oh cool, you can make your own Mario levels? Dude, put a bunch of Boos here, I love those things.
You: Can you come back on Thursday?

I like how you are just so level headed and anyone who is critical of this idea ist thinks is "the worst thing to happen to a video game". Nice way to position the argument. Funny. I figured if everything wasn't available right away you'd have to complete the built-in levels or search for hidden tokens, stickers or whatever to unlock them in creator mode.

It's a weird decision, but I'll live with it.
 
If the main concern is consumers getting overwhelmed by how all these tools then maybe there's a problem with the clarity and ease of use of these tools. Just a thought.

But I suppose this will fly over the heads of some posters who have enough of a mental capacity to compare playing a video game to dental health but not enough to know that a red koopa doesn't fall to his death.

In a world where publishers insist on having users pre-order games or wait in line day 1 or day 0 or whatever the fuck they call it, this is MADNESS. Just give your users full access to the fucking game they PAID MONEY FOR.

Look, I don't own a Wii U nor a 3DS so yes, I don't actually have any real say in the matter, but I disapprove nonetheless.
 
I don't understand this limitation either. What if you play offline? Does the game still keep track of what day it is through the internal clock? If so, can't you just set the time ahead by 9 days to unlock the rest of the content?

Sounds pretty dumb but I'll see how it rolls out. I thought splatoon decision was dumb initially, but its probably the reason why I kept coming back to the game.
 
One thing you can be sure is that the game was playtested to hell and back, they probably came to the conclusion that unlocking stuffs that way lead to the best experience for the players.
We would know that if we got an Iwata asks on this game...

That's a game design issue, not locking off content because people might get overwhelmed. A similar comparison would have been Valve not allowing the player to make right turns until they've played and made left turns and gotten the hang of those for 9 days.

I think it's more that with the level creation tools you can go wild in a way that's not present in the 2D Mario games. you can combine many items together forming something not previously seen in a Mario game. you can put wings on an enemy, then drag a mushroom onto it to make it larger, then add a star to give it invincibility, then put it into a warp pipe, etc. there's a lot of room for experimentation within the tools and I think Nintendo is hoping that each feature will be put through its paces.

That is certainly true. The only reason I can think for this is because of the combination aspect of the designer. Unlocking them slowly allows one to be sure to try out all the combinations and easily keep track of what you've done (since each day adds a set amount), but of course there's nothing to say you couldn't easily do that with everything unlocked from the get go.

I think the mistake here is the 24 hour aspect. If you could unlock stuff after those five minutes sessions they talk about I don't think we'd see as much complaining especially since that would mean it would only take 40 minutes to unlock the final ninth pack.

Gradually introducing more complex elements is absolutely a game design issue.

By that time they will have moved on to something else. Gotta strike while the iron is hot. Though you might have to wait nine days to learn what is an iron, how to strike, and when it's hot.

Nintendo is really not trustworthy with tutorials nowadays. Their "techniques" of easing people into their games include hamfisted verbal diarrhea like in Nintendo Land and Skyward Sword. You have to suffer through walls of text in Splatoon every single time you boot up the game instead of just putting the "news" in a scrolling ticker at the bottom. Same goes for any time you unlock any weapon.

I don't trust Nintendo telling me how to brush my teeth if they've been consistently screwing that up the past several years. I don't have a reason to trust their "methods".

Unlocking those elements over an arbitrary time clock rather than based on how a player is progressing is poor game design. Plenty of games would be shitty if unlocks were based on the calendar rather than how good you were at the game.
