Thanks for liking and commenting on my earlier levels (Honorable Mansion and Vine Line), you guys! I've tried to play some of yours and given medals where they were due (which is most of the time -- GAF is really, really saving the 'play' section of SMM for me, whereas the 100 Mario Challenge was slowly killing it).

My new level is a bit simpler in design but apparently (based on a scant 4 players and 18 attempts) it turned out pretty hard? I really don't think it is, but feedback is welcome. It's called Big Spiny's Cave. ID: 396A-0000-0077-DEDB

Okay, here's the spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YS83TEweQY1lCOcYo0QKF7VOAHtNHyp0TshsAv5MFCQ/edit?usp=sharing

And your level gets 10 minutes just like everyone else! XD But if I don't beat it during the stream I'm definitely gonna go back later and beat it.

Thank you. I love watching someone else playing my levels blind.

BTW, even if I rated it 5/7 in the difficulty scale, my level is not hard per se, but kinda convoluted. I'd find reasonable if you skip it after 10 minutes :)

Just created my first level

Conveyor Belt Castle
5895-0000-008C-21BF

It's more of a true Mario level, with an emphasis on skill, timing & platforming.

On the moderate side in terms of difficulty and there to turn the tide against the flood of gimmick/auto levels on show.

My first upload!

It's pretty bare bones right now but eventually it will be my attempt at a 1-1 type of level (once I unlock all the tools/parts I need). I'm putting it up to play test a 'secret' platforming section. Give it a try and let me know if it's too hard or too easy (I'm pretty bad at Mario games so it's hard for me to judge). It's only 10 seconds* long now but that's just to force you to go a certain way.

This game is crazy fun!

*easier 20 second version: 38A4 0000 007A 9F10
So nobody's been able to beat the original 10 second version of this level yet. Give it a try, it's not that hard if I can do it anyone should be able to.

OK, for real this time.
I wasn't able to stream it yesterday, but I will start another Super Mario Maker stream in about 40 minutes, featuring YOUR levels, so if you want to see your levels played (not necessarily beaten) live, send me a PM with the Course ID(s) and I'll make sure to play them (first come, first serve). I'll stream for up to two hours and will try to fit as many levels into them as I can.

To watch the stream, go to http://www.twitch.tv/Bjoern_the_Smexy
It'll start at 4 pm CET (as said, about 40 minutes from now).

Okay, some problems.

Pipe 4 - When you slide of one-block walls, it skips you and you lose control for a bit, so it caused unnecessary deaths because I lost control. That's not really good design and every time I died it felt cheap.

Pipe 5 - Invisible Coin Blocks...seriously? You could've just made it impassible blocks. It's cheap. Also having no space between and getting the Spring is a bit too high of a risk, especially that late in the level. It feels very artificial given the overall ease of the level up until the 5th Pipe. This part of the level is a complete mess in general and feels like you had to up the difficulty but didn't really think it through. Not to mention that if you don't kill the Thwomp on the first go with the Star, the spring disappears, meaning you have to completely restart.

In General - You could've put a lot of filler blocks so I don't get a preview of the next piece of the puzzle.

You REALLY need to fix this level.
That sounds like a kinda harsh answer to someone who said that they were really happy with their level. Sorry, i just had to mention it.

Okay GAF, I'm going to set a tentative time to livestream your levels!

Quote this post to see the link, then tune into Tentakul for another round of 10takill on Sunday night at 4:00 PM Pacific time (tentative time).

Please submit no more than two levels per person, I want to make sure as many people get their levels played as possible!

Done and done.

Edit: Looks like I double submitted the same thing. My bad. Obviously I only wanted it played once.

A quick thing I threw together last night...

Challenge:Burning Bones (FB2C-0000-0089-EBF5)
WVW69icvztk8es09y8

Sometimes I get ideas that wont really work as a fully flowing level (like my monty mole challenge) so this is pretty much how I label my less typically designed stages, don't expect much guiding coins or aesthetic attention.

Anywho it's all about bouncing of Dry Bones before they turn to ash.
The more NSMBU skilled of you could likely skip a few things with jumping and air spinning, to the rest of you I'll say now you've got one shot at the first gap so don't dilly dally!

Ok, I finally played through all of Group 3's stages. I haven't decided on my top 3 yet, but I'll do that soon. I want to say thanks to everyone who is judging. At the time I played, I don't think the levels were added to the contest creator's favorites list, so I had to manually type in every code. I don't have a laptop so I had to use Notes on my iPhone. Constantly switching from Notes to GAF and back to find people's submissions took so much time. I appreciate everyone who gives feedback because it really did burn me out. I'm sorry if some of the things I wrote were incorrect, harsh, misunderstood, or confusing. I got pretty tired while doing this so some feedback may be more detailed than others.
That's a loooooot of feedback, cheers for taking the time.
Surpsingly I felt more mentally drained attempting to pull off a simple 1-1 more than anything else, it's hard to gauge the difficulty so to give myself leeway I thought I'd go SMW style considering its first stage is probably the most notably challenging and involved of the series.
And yes the Piranha Plant spawns are kinda awful in this game, the idea was after the two enemy free pipes the one in the air that you fortunately can't jump on would show that plants can lurk within, except you know the whole timing thing is a bit screwed up in Mario Maker.

I'd agree that it's too loaded for a 1-1 and not entirely organic looking in how it presents new elements (also coin central, I assumed kids like collecting those things) but I wasn't really expecting to win this anyway.

....But I'd never take away my donut planks! that was my proudest achievement.

Finished another level, this time I'm dabbling in non-linear stages similar to my previous "Rescue in Sky Fort!" and "Aeroskies" designs. Don't be alarmed, the usual traditional Mario gameplay stands, however, there are much more secrets this time around. With connecting paths and different challenges encouraging further replays! I tried making exploration the focus, but platforming and rising challenge the incentive!

Check it out below.

Checker-Temple

Feedback would be appreciated! This stage took a while to get right, intricate design is time consuming!
Exploration is paid off with Yoshis, a decent deal.
I love what you did with the castle area in that it doesn't even feel like the usual castle theme.

If you've already tried Title Fight, please give it another shot! I've reuploaded it to deal with an exploit that Neki pointed out.

Updated code for Title Fight: 3355-0000-008A-EEE1

I'd appreciate the stars! Of course if you play my level, as always, send me a code for your level so I can reciprocate.
Cool idea, took me a while to grasp exactly what I was supposed to be doing but I got there in the end.

Though due to Bowser's awkward jumping I ended up finishing round 3 with pure shell assault, he was just too nimble for the POW block.
This is the sort of thing that's at the mercy of Bowser's random nature of moving and attacking but it's hard to gripe against the situations where fireballs and buzzy beetle shells decide to arrive at the same spot at the same time because well there's not much to be done about that.

Tutorial skip is just grand.

Finally finished my first level. Took way longer than I planned. It's pretty tricky in places

6976-0000-008B-13FB
Well I at least made it to the underground section but I couldn't bring myself to go again after dying down there.
Pretty tricky in places he says...

Some guy named IGA (who is most likely not the real IGA) has made a great Legion boss fight: B71C-0000-0088-A4E4
Fortunately brute forcing your way to the core is a lot quicker as mario, neat though.

I just played IGA's strange blooper stage, my mind is full of fuck...and squids.

My newest level, Springloaded. I'm kind of proud of the spring mechanics. I wanted a Lakitu at the end but he broke the last area.

Don't mind my criticism, though. Every level I played was a good level, and even though I may not find a certain level 1-1 material, that doesn't mean I'm right. Like I said, I am pretty rigid in my belief what a 1-1 level should be like, and who knows, my own level probably suffered for that. I would reply to every one who responded to my comments, but quoting multiple posts on mobile is a pain. So I will just say that I appreciate how you guys respond to enlighten me as to why you did the things you did. It teaches me a lot and makes me think of 1-1 levels in ways I haven't thought of before.

In other news, it looks like the Pokemon Center theme kind of blew up this weekend, and is now my most trafficked and popular level...so I'm #1 worldwide for the week.

I've been binge watching Seinfeld over the last few weeks and this was just what I needed. I wish I could give you a star for every episode of Seinfeld.

Thanks to everyone who gave my first few levels a try and left me some feedback. I present to you now the end of Green Fields, the castle area:

Hope you all enjoy it. :)

For all my previous levels: http://www.mariomakerhub.com/makers/LordAlu

Just went through you Green Fields anthology and I have to say I really enjoyed it! The only note I would have is that in 1-3 I got a bit disoriented going through pipes and doors and ended up back in the beginning after crossing the obstacles. Other than that, very well done and I had a lot fun! I followed you so I can play your next set of levels!

Alright guys, world 3 and 4 are all set to go! Full set of level codes listed below.

Also, something cool I didn't realize you could do until today... you CAN play these as full worlds with lives carrying over between levels and all that. To do this you need to download the levels from course world and save them to your course bot. Ideally, save them in the slots the match the level numbers I listed (or make up your own worlds). Once that's done, click the big play button under the world number in course bot to play each world as a pack!

Have fun and let me know what you think!

World 3 : Cape Chomp

3-1 Cheep-Cheep Reef

3-2 Seaside Cliffs

3-3 Urchin Ocean Adventure

3-4 Crazy Chomp's Switch Ship
FD2F-0000-008A-F345

World 4 : Mount Monty

4-1 Monty Mole Mines
65E1-0000-008A-F384

4-2 Snaking Up The Mountain
2ACA-0000-008A-F3CA

4-3 Mountain Top Cloud Hop
C8ED-0000-008A-F3F9

4-4 Major Monty's Hot Top Fort

This is way too many levels to individually comment on but I have started playing your full game and its bar none the most cohesive thing I have played so far in Mario maker. I'm half way through world two and you have done an absurdly good job. Everyone should be playing this, its incredibly good so far.

Okay, just finished a new one that I had a lot of fun making - I think it turned out good, too:

Aerial Battleship Balrog: 4215-0000-008A-22E9

The map is inspired by this oldie:
balrog01_zpswljl9mnv.jpg

Of course, Strider gameplay isn't much like SMB3 gameplay so while the basic layout is similar to the original, the particulars vary.

I also spent extra time on this one coming up with lots of possible routes (including one you have to be small to take advantage of), secrets, and hidden goodies for those who try things. Please let me know what you think.

ALSO: If you like it, try my others! And maybe check out "The Anthill", one I did a couple weeks ago that only two people have played.

Hey! What a fun course. It took me a couple tries and I definitely didn't see all the routes. It had a lot of clever exploration without being overly fast-paced...I like airship levels like this where you don't feel too rushed. excellent level, highly recommended!

Created a level based on one of my favorite Game & Watch levels, Donkey Kong Game & Watch. The initial part of the stage is based on the design of the Game and Watch level, with added elements of course.

Donkey Kong, meet Karma

10 seconds is WAY too short for this kind of level that needs frame and pixel perfect jumping. Nobody aside from the hardcorest of the hardcore wants to play a level with that high a difficulty.

Your 20 second version is MUUUUUUCH better in that regard.

Give that man all of your stars. Seriously, try out his levels. They are classic, very well designed, and some of them are very interesting and fun to play (I especially liked "2-2 Buzzing Treetops"). I am not kidding: this is me giving a "GAF Seal of Approval" here. I am not done playing all of his levels yet, but I'm having a great time. And they only get better and better!

This is a magical forest where seasons change in a matter of minutes-- with it, the creatures grow and change providing a new challenge with each season. Heavily inspired by my favorite Banjo-Kazooie level: Click Clock Woods. Starting to get the hang of making balanced stages. Sometimes I focus too much on the aesthetics and end up getting a stage that's more fun to look at than play. This time I built the scenery around a gameplay mechanic--the life cycle of wigglers-- and then colored in some nice scenery. I think a main aspect to making a great level is to, yes, have a cool twist to differentiate yourself from the 2 million other levels out there... but taking care to ensure that gimmick works for the player. Hopefully this idea works for you guys. So have fun with this one, GAF. I'm gunna go ahead and play a bunch of your levels after I eat lunch!

Oh, and feedback is appreciated!

Thanks very much!

1-3 is a little tricky! I designed it so that the top route is shorter but more difficult to traverse, with the bottom route being a little easier but longer. At the time I couldn't think of how to get both back to the main stage, so I made that door to get you to the pipe. I didn't realise it would confuse people though (you're the second to mention it!). Now of course I realise I could have just had two exit pipes :p

Anyway, thanks and I'm glad you enjoyed them!

After a few sample/practice courses, I finally finished my first real level.

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiwFpW9PQNk&feature=youtu.be

i7ZHq4R.jpg

Essentially there are 2 side objectives in addition to simply clearly the level: A. collect enough coins for an extra life (not that hard) & B. clear the level as a prince (way harder but possible).

Just by looking at that screenshot, this level looks like those cringe worthy ones you see on expert.

I started playing from your Super Mario Planets 1-1. I like it a lot, especially the ending. The way you position the blue skulls and arrange them to fly off the rails is great. My main dislike is the blind jump in the middle where you have to sacrifice Yoshi. I think most people will die once there before realising what to do.

Thanks for the feedback, I was waiting Group #2 voting to end before taking into account the feedback. I'm going to fix this soon but you don't have to sacrifice Yoshi, he can jump on sawblades.

Spotlight Alert

Okay so anyone who has been around this thread since the start is probably aware of KooopaKid's Planet series of stages that if I'm not mistaken aim to bring the mini challenges/puzzle style of hopping between planetoids in Super Mario Galaxy to the 2D Plane.
This leads to a rather different style of stage that merges some nice platforming bits with a few puzzle like tasks to make you think a bit about what to do and how to progress.
Gradually he's been taking on feedback to revamp the older stages while plugging away at new ones.

I just played the revamped versions of the first two stages and as someone who beat the originals I think they've been tuned to a much more manageable difficulty level (original 1-2 was quite the gauntlet if I recall) which is good.

But more impressive is getting around to 1-4 and 1-5 which I'd yet to play, not going to spoil anything here but I really recommend people check these out, the more they go on the more they pull off that Challenge room like approach that makes strong use of taking a main idea and gradually ramping it up.

So yeah, follow this man, I know I am so I can see what comes next in this series, cool unique stages.

Wow thanks for the very positive comments! :D. It makes me want to do even better levels! I'm going to try to keep the same design philosophy for the next batch of levels. I'm going to modify 1-1 again to make it more beginners friendly and modify the parts where you can get stuck if you're a bit unlucky!

On a side note I got my 3rd star medal!!
150 stars and 30 uploads allowed now :)
Fun fact. 130 of my 151 stars have cone from 4 stages. And they certainly were my best (and most recent) creation. So anyone losing the desire to make more stages shouldn't. The more quality creations you make, the more of a following you get.

I've got a lot of feedback that I stay very within the confines of classic mario (which is true) so I am planning to break out a little bit and try something a little more out there. It won't be crazy abstract or anything but I suppose I should try something new haha.

Great level and beautiful to look at! Only thing I can give feedback about is I got stuck a few times and had to restart at the very top of the parts when you're inside the trees. Starred!

Just played all three as I've been making Game and Watch levels as well to compare mainly. I like your levels, but they do seem a tad difficult at some points more so than they maybe should be. I think especially the Greenhouse in 3 could do with having some flooring since the enemies themselves should be enough of a challenge on their own. The oil panic bit at the end too is kind of difficult with the koopas as well as the bobombs to deal with.

I've just uploaded my second set if you want to check them out. We seem to have a few similar ideas, but we execute them differently. I was planning to do a gallery style level next with multiple games in one, but I think I might stick to just single levels.

no problem. i really liked the way you designed it and all the sound effects you put in :)

although i think the screen rolls too fast to appreciate the design

So based on the feedback of Naar and a few others, I've updated my Great Train Robbery level to slow down the auto-scroll and to try to encourage people to explore the level a bit more.
Great Train Robbery 2

I'd be really keen to see if the small changes have made for a better level. I kept the slightly annoying sound effects in because my son told me they were cool and who am I to argue with a 10 year old. Speaking of him, he begged me to upload one of his levels and told me to put it on Neo GAF

Had fun playing GAF levels last night. In particular, I really enjoyed Boba2007's levels. A tremendous dedication to aesthetics that also drive forward the level design. Beautiful stuff. You can find some of his levels here, or, check out the following level (my favourite) and then follow it to his MM profile:

Great Galoomba Valley: B90F-0000-0039-F5EE

In the meantime, I have a new level: Wild Tanooki Fields is an early-game SMB 3 level that offers an easy main route, and a handful of secrets/shortcuts that require a bit more finesse and timing which should please experienced players.

I liked it quite a bit. I saw a similar level playing with the 4 seasons theme made by a Japanese player in 100 Mario challenge (With an original/strange boss fight at the end, quite difficult to beat!). I didn't really feel the progression through the seasons as I was progressing the level, maybe it's not what you meant? The Japanese player made the same location moved through the seasons so I thought it worked a bit better. You don't recognize part of the levels between seasons here. But very nice presentation otherwise. I thought the platforming was a bit simple for my tastes but I know the work that went into this so good job!

Did you have the chance to play my latest level?

Just played your stage! I enjoyed it for the theme and it's aesthetics. I think the balance could still be tweaked a bit more, however. It was aesthetically pleasing, but the platforming felt like an afterthought, despite your attempts at making it the focus. There are a few areas where you can get stuck on the ceiling, and it's not exactly clear where you need to go when you're in those big rooms.

Overall, however...I enjoyed the idea. The hollowed out trees gave me a nice idea for future stages, and I really enjoyed the Fall segment. I feel like Spring wasn't really adhered to, and Winter felt like a stretch when you could have really ran with the theme!

Still, it's a great job. Especially given the premise!

The oil panic bit at the end too is kind of difficult with the koopas as well as the bombombs to deal with.

I've just uploaded my second set if you want to check them out. We seem to have a few similar ideas, but we execute them differently. I was planning to do a gallery style level next with multiple games in one, but I think I might stick to just single levels.

G&W: GHOST HOUSE: (48AA-0000-008D-412F)
G&W: CAVERN CONUNDRUM: (77CC-0000-008D-3FA1)

Thanks dude, Imma go play your levels right now :D

Just uploaded my first level with the base day 1 toolset. It's nothing crazy and I didn't throw as many enemies as possible on the screen. I just tried to make a simple Mario level that I would like to play. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Any pointers or advice would be appreciated. I have to say that the act of creation in this game is much more fun than I expected.

Down the Hatch

Apparently it is based around being swallowed by a Giant Piranha Plant :)

He thinks Sporky is the best thing since sliced bread and he's watched Shiba's stream with me so I promised him I'd post his level. Go easy, he's 10 :)

can much better appreciate the level now :)

I got stuck in the Winter section when a Magikoopa transformed the P-Switch into a Mushroom. Apparently that's a thing that can happen, who knew?

I played the 10 second version on my stream (thanks for the PM btw) and was not able to beat it. I don't know how far I even came. I tried five times or so and then gave up.
10 seconds is WAY too short for this kind of level that needs frame and pixel perfect jumping. Nobody aside from the hardcorest of the hardcore wants to play a level with that high a difficulty.

Your 20 second version is MUUUUUUCH better in that regard.
Yeah i went ahead and deleted the 10 second version, it was probably a little to hard. The only thing I don't like about the 20 second one is that its possible to skip the platforming part. Wish I could do 15 seconds.

That's hilarious. I really never even considered that! I'm totally going to use that in a future stage. Hey, at least he gave you a mushroom.

Also, I'm playing GAF levels now and I'm having an absolute blast. Anyone have any codes they want me to play specifically? I'll dole out some stars and feedback!

Sweet! Glad you guys are enjoying them and thanks for the stars :)

Just a simple level that centers on using the shell and tanooki suit.

Diddy's Banana Coin Plantation: 44DB-0000-0082-7881
Collect banana coins as Diddy in this vine swinging level.

10 seconds to finish: 08F9-0000-007C-6742
Try out this challenge level which should take you less than 10 seconds to beat.

Agreed, those are great classic Mario style levels (only played them up to 2-2, but I'll try out the rest whenever possible).

Have you tried out mine? If not, here's a post with all of them.
