Super Mario Run announced for iOS (Android later), Dec 2016, Screens/Info in OP

This actually looks great. A lot of mario levels, especially the ones in NSMBU have such great level design that you can just constantly run to get through them once you find the right rhythm so it seems natural to translate that style to a more accessible mobile format. I have good faith this will be quite fun as they have been top notch in terms of 2d platformer level design in recent years.

But it isn't a real Mario platformer (I hope this doesnt sound like the " 3D world/land arent real 3d mario") but if you cant controll momentum this really wont feel link a mario game (even looking that trailers the short jumps looked weird). It just like a random iOS platformer with a mario skin.

It's like saying Pokemon Go exposed more people to Pokemon RPGs, when they're completely different games.

Pokemon Go has already proven this to be false.

But...it did? Pokemon Go increased 3DS software sales for Pokemon.

the console/handheld split will become dedicated hardware/mobile

although the nx will probably have access to their mobile games (at least the ones that don't need a gps to work) so there's also that.

I wonder how many resources this would take compared to a handheld game.

you are all acting as if nobody had played a mario game before, they will fall in love with it and go buy a nintendo console next day. While we console gamers look from this side of the fence casual mobile gamers see this like "oh yay no need to buy a nintendo console for a mario game anymore"

Pokemon Go boosted the sales of all Pokemon games and the 3DS, so we have evidence that this strategy can work for Nintendo.

I admire the lack of IAP. My next question would be if this drives hardware sales, the same way that Pokemon Go did for 3DS. If so, then this is really good news for everyone. The game itself does look like generic NSMB assets though, but I trust Shiggy to make something fun.

Mario Mobile game unveiled before Animal Crossing/Fire Emblem Mobile? Releasing this year? Nintendo at an Apple conference with Miyamoto?

For the love of god, sneak us one more big surprise with a NX event sooner rather than later this month, Nintendo!

Well the success of Pokemon Go has certainly spiked interest in Sun and Moon.

EDIT: beaten several times

The directional blocks are a great idea. It should allow some neat levels.

Is this a norm in phone runners?
The good ones. I'd recommend checking out Rayman Jungle Run, Lost Socks, and Adventure Beaks

What i think some people seem to forget about the whole nintendo mobile strategy is, that it´s not about making really awesome, gameplay oriented, full version games for the typical nintendo fan that buys their consoles/handhelds. But to make games that make people that have stopped buying nintendo hardware, or never have bought them interested in their IP and subsequently make them buy their hardware and retail games.

Like, i don´t care about this and most likely won´t play this and stopped pokemon go after 2 weeks or so. But even though i have a 3DS and WiiU, even Pokemon go worked on me, in regards to nintendo´s strategy. I bough Alpha Sapphire, Y and have Sun pre-ordered.

And i think i´m not the only one and i think it´s also working on people that don´t already have nintendo hardware. How well? We´ll find out.

So, personally, eh whatever, good for nintendo and if they sell more hardware good for me, cause that means more games for me in the end.

You'll never take me alive, mobile gaming. Good thing I use Android in this case though so I'm not tempted early.

I assume this is why they haven't announced NX. Leaving room between announments. Looks really fun and very well designed. The Rayman games are probably my favourite mobile games and this looks even better from a gameplay perspective so really looking forward to it.

But...it did? Pokemon Go increased 3DS software sales for Pokemon.

I'm pretty sure that increase was mostly people going back to the games, not people who only played Go (only anecdotycal evidence).

What I meant was, someone who has only played Go isnt someone who "has been exposed to pokemon RPG", the only thing they have been exposed to is the characters.

Update: Just received the announcement, added in below. Nintendo calls it a “full-sized Super Mario Bros. action platformer that has been developed specifically for mobile”. Also confirmed for December.

Nintendo has just announced a brand new mobile game, Super Mario Run. The reveal took place during a conference currently being held by Apple. Shigeru Miyamoto was in attendance to show the title.

In Super Mario Run, Mario will automatically run to the right. Players can touch the screen to jump over obstacles, avoid enemies, and capture the flag pole to finish levels. A mode is also included where you can compete against the moves of other people who have completed the same course. You’ll also be able to create your own Mushroom Kingdom based upon these play results. Miyamoto has been deeply involved with development.

Super Mario Run is coming out this holiday, and will be distributed on iOS first. According to Nintendo, “iOS users will be able to download and enjoy a portion of Super Mario Run for free and will be able to enjoy all of the game content available in this release after paying a set purchase price. ” Fans will also be able to nab Super Mario stickers for iMessage.

KYOTO, Japan, Sept. 8, 2016 JST –At an Apple event in San Francisco, CA earlier today, Nintendo announced that the leading man of video games will star in Super Mario Run, a full-sized Super Mario Bros. action platformer that has been developed specifically for mobile, and will be available first on the App Store this December. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage at the event and put Mario through his paces in a multi-level demonstration instantly familiar to millions of fans worldwide. In the game, Mario runs forward on his own, but relies on the touch of a single finger to jump over obstacles, avoid pesky enemies and capture the flag pole to complete levels.

“We have created Super Mario Run to be perfect for playing on your iPhone,” said Mr. Miyamoto, who first devised the Mario character more than 35 years ago. “Super Mario has evolved whenever he has encountered a new platform, and for the first time ever, players will be able to enjoy a full-fledged Super Mario game with just one hand, giving them the freedom to play while riding the subway or my favorite, eating a hamburger.”

“The App Store has made so many things better in our lives – the way we communicate, the way we work and the way we have fun,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “But for gamers of all ages, the story just hasn’t been complete without Mario, so we are thrilled that Nintendo is bringing him to iOS for the first time this December.”

Super Mario Run has a mode in which the player collects coins and heads for the goal, and a mode in which the player competes against the acrobatic moves of other people who have completed the same course. In addition, there is a mode in which you create your own Mushroom Kingdom based upon these play results.

iOS users will be able to download and enjoy a portion of Super Mario Run for free and will be able to enjoy all of the game content available in this release after paying a set purchase price. More details will be disclosed at a later date. The game has been developed with Mr. Miyamoto as lead creator for Nintendo. Nintendo is also continuing its partnership with DeNA for the launch of Super Mario Run. It will be offered on the App Store this December in more than 100 different countries, and nine different languages.

To help iOS users get ready for the launch of Super Mario Run, a free Mario-themed sticker pack for the App Store for iMessage will launch this month. iMessage users can easily access and use these stickers in a variety of ways, bringing a bit of Mushroom Kingdom flavor to their conversations.

Super Mario Run represents the next phase of Nintendo’s expansion to mobile platforms, following the release of Miitomo earlier this year. After the launch of Super Mario Run in December, Nintendo plans to deliver its previously announced mobile device titles in the Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem series before the end of March, 2017.

hiw big was the pokemon go impact and hiw long did it last? it will effect but will it be like a continuous effect?

We don't know how long the pokemon go impact will last. In a lot of regions, it's still on top of the world. It could go on a long time more too, if they get a content update out on regular basis.

I'm just trying to understand how Nintendo decided to appear at the Apple event and announce it as a timed iOS exclusive with exclusive stickers for the message client.

So is Nintendo being payed by Apple to make their IP a timed exclusive to a particular OS with exclusive message client stickers?
or
is Nintendo willingly partnering with Apple?

Both reasons sound scary to me. But It makes my decision on what Mobile Phone to buy a lot easier.

I liked Rayman and lost socks so I'll be trying this out for sure.

When everyone debated back and forth about Nintendo putting its franchises on mobile I always imagined games like this as apposed to the full on games we're used to getting on the dedicated Nintendo hardware.

This is the way to do things and if Pokemon Go is any indication it will actually help the sales of Mario games.

All I need now is Yoshi's Touch and Go on my phone so I have a jillion people to play against with online leader boards.

Exactly

Nintendo is using the mobile market to promote and strengthen their full-fledged games.

My ex-girlfriend couldn't play New Super Mario Wii U if her life depended on it. The idea of holding a button to run, the directional pad and using another one to jump at the same time was too much.

But all this one needs is one button and timing.
Its genius

I would play this for a couple days and just get bored with it.

It will probably just take me a couple hours. But I generally dislike playing games on my phone.

I don't begrudge mobile gamers from getting some Mario magic. Good for them and I'll surely try it out myself. However, from a business perspective, how does this affect NX? Surely it has to undermine it. No matter how much Nintendo wants this to be a gateway drug that encourages users to purchase NX for the more fully-featured games, most users are simply either going to be happy with what they are being offered on mobile, and the others are going to take this as a sign that the winds are changing and if they are patient the rest of Nintendo's games will probably end up on mobile too. This game will surely be a success for Nintendo, and the investors will be happy, but I see it as another strike against NX which is going to already have the chips stacked against it.

If it's like Rayman Jungle Run that's good news, the one runner that could interest me for a while, pretty decent game.

Exactly. Like with the success of Pokemon GO, it's not about faithfully recreating Mario's gameplay, it's about the IP and having a close enough approximation of what people think Mario is available on their phone in two minute bursts.

Left to right with some jumps? That's Mario alright. Print money.
And considering the position they're in this is more than good enough for now. Regardless of Nintendo succeeding in that venture, the entire purpose of their mobile efforts is to boost their brand enough to get more people to pay attention to their traditional hardware.

Why are people saying "No Microtransactions". Did they actually say that, I can't find any confirmation of that.

They have said "free trial" and "pay to unlock the rest of the content", but that doesn't mean there won't be any microtransactions.

Did the Sonic Runner make some money for SEGA?

Not enough. Long story the short the gameplay rewarded you too much for playing well, so SEGA tried nerfing the game a number of times to force players to buy red rings (the worst patch actually had them put walls of spikes in so your runs could no longer be potentially infinite). Players lost interest in the extra grind, and those that were left didn't buy enough rings or red rings for the RNG gacha wheel of fortune gimmick thing, so they eventually shut it down this year. Probably the best video on it is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOXO7_NlqWE

Shame because as a game it had the hallmarks of Sonic Team pretty well implemented, as well as a load of neat SEGA themed events/cameos. I wonder if it would've lasted had it foregone the F2P model for something else.

hiw big was the pokemon go impact and hiw long did it last? it will effect but will it be like a continuous effect?

Pokemon GO is still one of the most popular games in the world right now. Its declined somewhat but still going strong.

Whether its success contributed to the press conference announcement today is debatable.

I'm unsure why there's so much controversy. This is almost exactly what I expected when I heard Nintendo/Mario was going to mobile. Unsure why people want drastically different gameplay or were expecting a fully featured 2D Mario game. Also, the announcement of this Mario mobile title doesn't mean that we won't get other Mario mobile titles down the road.

While I can understand why people would be turned off by the NSMB rehashed assets, i rather they not waste the money on a mobile game of all things....

Partnering with Apple for exposure seems cool and a good move for Nintendo, but I am sure Apple was knocking on Nintendo's door first asking them if they could bring something nice to their press conference.
"Timed exclusive" is also 100% a thing where money exchanged hands, no reason to do this unless this is paid for. But Nintendo can sure get something out of announcing this at the Apple conference for themselves.

Also, if they bring out the Fire Emblem game out like that, and it has stickers for whatever this message thing is that I never used, I will seriously consider upgrading my iPad, not even joking.

While I can understand why people would be turned off by the NSMB rehashed assets, i rather they not waste the money on a mobile game of all things....

Could you go into detail to elaborate on the difference between what you call a "waste" of money, over what most people would call an "investment" of money, which is sure to bring in profit one way or another (I mean - they are selling this game). What's your reason to believe Nintendo is not profiting off of this?

The shock and/or disappointment here is misplaced, I think.

It was obvious they were going to do a Mario app at some point, and it was just as obvious it was going to be a tappy game without buttons.

Official gameplay trailer by Nintendo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E39ychZKnDI

I will say that I'm impressed at the way they've revised traditional Mario design to integrate inevitable momentum and a single 'button'. And I can see a lot of people going nuts for this, the Nintendo quality is clearly there.

But even so, it doesn't look like the kind of thing I'd buy, even if I had the means of playing it.

Don't you just hold right to win along with some jumps in Mario games anyway?

This is a fair point. Many (but far from all) levels in 2D Mario are basically designed for full throttle speed from beginning to end, requiring only jumps at the right moment.

Every NSMB game has different visuals. NSMBU is the prettiest one. They weren't going to create a new style for something like this. They'll save that for the next full game.

It looks like this game uses a modified, stripped down version of Super Mario Maker. And of course the gameplay is most similar to this since Mario automatically runs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wI6wClmV8Y
If they used literally any of the other Mario Maker filters or that cartoony style the toads are in I would be way happier.

pokemon is something that could easily work on IPhones and iPads as well. It's turned based lol. I hope Nintendo puts it on mobile, I also got tired of Pokemon go after a week or so...
