Didn't see anything there to dethrone Super Mario World or even challenge it. Art style is safe and uninspiring. Just seems like Nintendo ran out of ideas for traditional 2D Mario and decided they're gonna do Super Mario Bros. LSD. Donkey Kong is where the real innovation is when it comes to modern 2D platforming.

Looks alright.
So, how long before we get complaints over lack of diversity in Wonder? Or why Daisy does not talk and behave like the spicy chica a very sweaty part of the fandom envision her as.

Love 2D Mario so of course I'll get this. It does still feel very dated compared to Donkey Kong Country.

The trailer doesn't seem to have any foreground elements and you'll notice the background also doesn't ever have assets that protrude into the middleground. It makes the screen looks like two separate layers with little to no inter connectivity at all times.

It makes such a world of difference in games like Tropical Freeze where different elements of the stage move by at a separate pace creating a much better feel of motion.

Also, side note. I think that voice flower is a direct response to Mario Maker. All the motion activated effects like fire works, applause, laughter, etc.. I think someone noticed how gratifying some of those placements can be.

The talking flower seems like it serves no purpose except to annoy the player. Why Nintendo like that? The game as looks like it leans a little too heavy on the gimmicky side. Pretty much all the other games had minor annoyances too, like unskipable boring intro in mario bros u. Mario has no need for anything but gameplay.

But I'll play it regardless since it has multiplayer. the multiplayer Mario games are such a fun party game, sabotaging other players, stealing power ups, trying to kill each other randomly, makes the game far more fun and difficult. Single player mario ends up too easy and boring.

The game will lean on the "weird, unexpected shit happening" aspect of the game.

I will probably have a bizarre fight with Bowser in it.

Looks weird, which could be cool, or disastrous. I’ll reserve judgement for more details/gameplay.

With the visual Fidelity I’m going to say this is a 30FPS game though, which is disappointing

Really excited for this. My one hope is that in single player there’s a power up that lets you fly. Such an important part or 3 and world was the flying and exploring areas above.

Idk,for comparison the last Mario bros game was a launch title on Wii U, literally using last gen Wii assets

This is a late gen Switch game,i expected a nice jump in the visuals so chances are this game still runs at 60fps (maybe with some drops)

I think saying something looks like a mobile game is disingenious because we're at a point where mobile games can look very nice as well with the phone hardware we have now.

The reason I don't play mobile games is not because of the art style or hardware but because of their predatory mictrotransactions.

I'm buying this game day 1. Looks like it's full of charm and it will be fun to collect everything.

Mobile games usually play it very safe and are very dull aesthetically, which this is. There are many different art style they could have gone with and they went with one of the most safe and boring. This isn't surprising as even their 3D games now all look the same.

exactly, saying something looks mobile means that its streamlined, low power, lacking character. Modern mobile games be damned, they still shouldn't exist!

They just haven't got a single 2D Mario right since the SNES, embarrassing really.

It really is. They've had 30+, years to top those games or at the very least match them and they keep failing and tripping (literally this time) over themselves.

More Mario great, but it don’t look that much different from nsmb.
I know that back in the Wii U era, 2D Mario and 3D Mario were *completely* seperate teams, with the 2D Mario team being the "B" team. I don't see any reason why that would have changed.

I guess I have a different view on this game because I see a game with lots of very expressive animations. Vibrant and diverse enviroments. The lighting is a lot better han how flat the New Games were. The powerups look interesing and fun. All the playable characters look great.. Plus all the levels we haven't seen. I'm very excited to see where it ends up in the endgame because endgame Mario is just pure platforming fun.

Saying it's lacking character is funny to me.

They should just give it to Retro Studios, they seem to understand what it takes to make a modern 2D platformer.

Retro is good but they're balls-deep in Metroid Prime 4 right now. I'm curious as to what the 3D Mario team has been working on after Bowser's Fury (which to me, was kinda mid).

I'm pretty sure Retro has two teams, one working on Metroid Prime 4 and other working on the long rumoured new Donkey Kong game. I may be wrong, but some credible people have said numerous times that Donkey Kong sequel is in the works. If this is the case then I'd prefer that team to work on 2D Mario, but I think the bureaucracy at Nintendo would not allow for this.
