Super Mario World is Amazing!

OK. Don't laugh. I've never played this game before but last night my cousin gave me his old Super Nintendo system along with this game and a few others. Before this the only Mario game I've ever played was the old one on the old Nintendo system. This Super Mario World game is so much fun! It is insane! Why don't they make more games like this today? :)

P.S. I just realized that the red dots on the map mean I can go another route too. And Mario is cuter in this game than he is now on Gamecube games. He just looks fat and old now. :lol

Super Mario World is easily in the top videogames of all time with Mario 3 being right there.

Yoshi's Island and Mario 3 are better, but it's still a fantastic title. The only Mario game I don't consider great is Super Mario Sunshine.

I agree about Sunshine. Yoshi's Island feels to much of a departure of the Mario series for me to consider, but yes Yoshi's Island is a great game.

Wow I also have Yoshi's Island in the bunch of games he gave me. It's the sequel to Super Mario World. :)

do yourself a favor and collect all the 'Mario Advance' titles for the GBA ... (this includes Mario World, and all the others you should check out...in portable form, to be sure)

Yoshi's Island will blow you away...

Mario Sunshine was great over Mario 64 ... but only in the sense that Mario World was great over Mario 3....
so check out Mario 3 too.

See if you can find 'Super Mario All-Stars + World' at a pawn or resale shop. Hopefully we can expose you to as much Nintendo greatness as possible.
Also, look for cool T-Shirts while you're there.

Enjoy! That was gaming bliss back in 1991 for me, my friends and family.
Still waiting for real follow up to snes console, that sucker brought too much joy to be topped.

Also keep in mind that these games were made back when sequels were cherished and respected...

A new mario only came about whenever there was enough change in the hardware/industry to justify an innovation...

Mario 2 ---> Mario 3 ----> Yoshi's Island ----> Mario 64 NOW THAT'S A SERIES MOTHERFUCKERS!!

SMW absolutely pales in comparison to SMB3 and SMW2.

I think some one is a bit exaggerating, they are all three excellent games. None pales in comparison with the others. Personally i prefer SMW, because of it great replay value. Because it's relatively easy and short it just asks to be replayed when ever you got a day or two to kill.

Fantastic game. I beat it at 100% with my sister back in the early-mid 90s. (96 gates?)

Did it all over again alone when it hit the GBA.

In my opinion, Yoshi's Island > Super Mario World > Super Mario Bros. 3
And Super Mario Sunshine > Super Mario 64 (playing it on DS reinforces my view on this)

I agree. I would have quoted Oli if you didn't add that unnecessary last bit :b

Actually, 'absolutely pales' is very harsh

I'm not as much of a mario fan now as I was in my youth, but it would be impossible for me to deny the greatness of the NES and SNES mario titles.

In my opinion, Yoshi's Island doesn't come close to any of the original four Super Mario games. Not close. I think people get caught up in it being so pretty. The gameplay isn't close, and baby Mario crying forces you to play the game without sound.

Yoshi's Island has always been the red-headed stepchild of the Mario franchise to me. I hate that friggin' game. :lol

SMW's a personal favorite of mine. I liked SM3, but I never went back to it like I did with SMW. I bought Yoshi's Island, never got into it, then sold my GBA.

Super Mario World is great, but Yoshi's Island is really a step above. I love the music in SMW though. :)

Yoshi's Island was fantastic, and the music was TOO good to mute. (Baby Mario sure did train me to not f-ck up, though!)

YI underground music > *

*hums and whistles the level select theme from Yoshi's Island. ^_^*

I love this song.

And if you want to replay an already cleared castle press L and R at the same time.

True.

SMB2 (SMA)
SMW (SMA2)
YI (SMA3)
SMB3 (SMA4)

Add in Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros. 2 Classic NES series games, and you have all six 2D marios in portable form! (Super Mario Advance's Super Mario Bros 2 is Super Mario Bros 2 USA, an altered form of the game Doki Doki Panic. Super Mario Bros. 2 Classic NES series is the REAL super mario bros 2, known as "The Lost Levels" in the US.)

And then I also have Super Mario 64 DS.

So, I have seven of the eight mario platformers to play on my DS. Yay. :D (The only missing one is Super Mario Sunshine)

I remember I got my Super NES with Super Mario World in late August 1991, a few days, or at least one day before the official release date. it was my first Nintendo system and game that I owned. although I had played NES and the older Mario games many times before.

Didn't the GBC SMB1 DX also include the Lost Levels, however?

Only some of the game. I believe the game was missing the letter stages.

SMW is the greatest Mario title ever and the only one I've had the patience to beat. It's the only Mario title that I don't consider overated. :)

Easily one of my faveorite games.

Without sounding too corny, I find playing the game reminds me of an innocence that has long passed when it comes to gaming. The game is so simple yet so deep in both design and control. I am so addicted to it! Plus Mario and Yoshi are so cute together. I can play the game just to watch their antics. :) :lol

I heart Super Mario World. Have for ~13 years and a day. :)

I believe all the stages are there. However, everything I've read indicates that it's inferior to more proper versions. For instance, Mario and Luigi don't control differently. The graphics used are the same as SMB1, whereas the real SMB2 used some new tiles. Things like wind are gone.

I wonder what esle you haven't played/experienced... NiGHTS? Burning Rangers? Panzer Dragoon? Gex :) ? Donkey Kong? Goldeneye?

Best pack-in game ever. I still remember being impressed by the graphics and sound. Particularly things like reverb in caverns and whatnot. Not to mention the flying cape and Yoshi. Best Mario ever.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Yes. Yes.
Well, we need to change that, STAT!! I take it you never owned a Saturn? Gex was a joke, although Gex: Enter the Gecko was my first real foray into the 3D platform realm ( Mario64 seemed to ambitious and tedious for me...at first, now it's awesome )

SMW is most certainly my favorite Mario title. I wish I could experience it for the first time again too. :P

Pixel for pixel, Mario Bros 3 is the better game, graphically and gameplay wise.

I only got to play SM3 after i played mario world, kinda surprised by how good it was.

Mario world wasnt directed by miyamoto, so i guess thats why it aint as good.

Yoshi's Island is the best game in the series.. then mario 3, then mario world.

Mario 64 is a good game but it hasnt aged very well. I think we were all caught up in the "wow, its 3d" back in the day..

How can anyone rag on Yoshi's Island's gameplay? :lol It has possibly the most diverse mechanics and gameplay scenarios of any platformer ever. Practically every stage introduced some new mechanic or concept. Brilliant, brilliant game.

Super Mario World was also incredible, and felt more adventurous due to the layout of the game and the stages themselves, but it was in no way superior to YI as a game, imo.

My personal 2-d Mario preference, from best to "worst" (even the worst Mario game is better than 99% of all other games imo):

SMB3
Yoshi's Island
SMW
SMB
SMB2

Never played the handheld iterations.
