Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

I haven't played Brawl in a while and I forgot all about Ike. Honestly I'd be surprised if he and Star Wolf didn't get cut.

Rob would be very surprising, as others said he's unique.

The thing that really bothers me about FLUDD is that is doesn't make sense for Mario's character design in Smash Bros. He's always been the "regular" character, the one any newcomer can pick up and play to get used to the basics of the game. The "average man".

Having a weird, gimmicky move that does no damage but does knockback doesn't fit that in the slightest. Like, I like the FLUDD and the general idea behind it, but it doesn't make any sense for Mario's SSB character design. If it were up to me I'd give Mario back his Tornado and give Luigi the Poltergust or something as his Down-B, which could potentially work similarly.

I'm hoping they'll at least buff it considering how it was borderline useless in Brawl.

I mean, for whatever reason I actually really like the Mario Tornado as an aerial, but still.

I think Shulk has a pretty good chance. Sakurai loves those critically well-received RPGs that don't sell that great like Mother for example. Mother is actually way overrepped considering how obscure it is compared to everything else in the game, and I think Xenoblade fits this bill.

What I'd love even more than that is the main character from X instead of Shulk. a moveset centered around piloting a mech would be awesome.

Him tweeting that pic of the monado was a good indication that at worst he has considered the series and knows about, to what extent we dunno.

Mother is pretty well known in Japan and Itoi is a national celebrity. The reason they don't crank out Mother games is because Itoi wants to keep it a project he worked on a few times at most.

Hell, one of their tentpoles of Wii U advertising in Japan was Mother 2 on the Virtual Console. Not saying it was a good idea, but to characterize it as obscure compared to, like, Ice Climbers is pretty crazy.

Imagine if Sakurai has picked say takamaru to be melee's retro rep, we probably would never even consider Ice Climbers as a smash rep

I don't know about that. In Japan, there's a divide between NES/Famicom games and those playable exclusively through the Disk System (they're almost considered two different platforms). Sakurai only considered retro NES characters for Melee, and it seems Pit was included in Brawl to represent the Disk System.

The Ice Climbers and Balloon Fighter were the only classic NES characters to receive multiple votes in Sakurai's Melee newcomer survey. Even more recently, Ice Climber received an e-Reader release, received an NES Classics GBA release, is on the Virtual Console, and is featured in NES Remix for Wii U. It's one of a handful of retro games that Nintendo routinely references/rereleases. People would certainly bring the Ice Climbers up as potential retro newcomers if they weren't in Melee; I see far more obscure suggestions on a daily basis.

Yeah I grew up with Ice Climbers being a part of Melee, but it's not like I had even heard of them prior to that.

It makes sense from the PoV that they offered a unique style with two characters, but not that they were a very popular series.

Wiki says:
In some European countries, the NES console was sold bundled with the game, increasing Ice Climber's familiarity outside Japan.

So maybe some Euro-GAFers were stoked to see Ice Climbers show up :P

I agree with this 100%, this is the main reason I think FLUDD should be dropped. It's completely incongruous with his Smash design--he's supposed to be the easy to pick up character, but he has one of the most unintuitive moves in the game.

I love sunshine, but you guys are right. It really doesn't work well in Smash, at least not how they have it now.

FLUDD should be an item really.

That might be a lot better.

Yall should watch some of the better Mario players out there. There are some very interesting and effective ways to use Fludd, from edge guarding to spacing to changing aerial direction.

We need an Ice climbers reboot.

"The world's most adventurous siblings return for the first time in 20 years!

Scale the greatest mountain peaks with teamwork and puzzle solving!

Use your wiles to evade the local wildlife!

Turn your hammer into a variety of other tools such as a lasso, a helicopter, a pickaxe and more!

Customize your climber with functional and cosmetic equipment and upgrade them as you progress!

Pick up special equipment from other players via Streetpass!

Use your hammers to engage in pitched combat with other climbers!

Use your hammers' built-in flamethrower in order to melt frozen structures and send avalanches down to crush your pursuers from a mysterious government agency!

Turn the tides of battle with your sub-machine guns in tactical squad combat!

See to it that you carry your nuclear bombs to the top of every summit to ensure no one will ever steal your record!"

I'm sure there are. People learn how to work with pretty much anything in smash.

I'm just saying I don't think it's intuitive. Like others have said, Mario has always felt like a well rounded easy to play character. Having a move like that is just kind of weird.

There's just no way Falco's going to be cut. He's too popular.

I think Wolf, Ike, and Lucas are the likeliest to be cut (if anyone's getting cut at all). Maybe R.O.B., but probably not.
I honestly wouldn't miss any of these three, especially Wolf. I vastly prefer Marth and Ness over Ike and Lucas. Wolf is just plain boring. That being said, I am sure there are people who likes these characters out there, so in a way, it would suck if they were cut.

The thing that bothers me the most about FLUDD is where is he getting the water source from?
Logic doesn't apply to smash. How does peach pull turnips out from a metal floor? How does wario materialize a motorcycle out of nowhere? You can ask questions like that all day long.

Cutting Lucas doesn't make any sense. Brawl represented Mother 3 with a stage, trophies, music and stuff. Roy, Young Link, Dr. Mario and Pichu didn't really represent their series in Melee like Lucas did in Brawl.

I don't see anything wrong with a relatively easy character having some more advanced techniques. That being said, Mario is actually not an incredibly easy character to play when it comes to competitive play.

Young Link had Great Bay, The Moon Trophy, The Four Giants Trophy, Tingle Trophy, Turtle Trophy, Majoras Mask Trophy and Trophy Tussle Stage, the Ocarina of Time Trophy, and Lon Lon Milk Trophy.

Those are stretches, but Young Link was more his Majoras Mask counterpart which had it's fair share of representation in Melee similar to Lucas in Brawl as you said.

Not saying it Lucas would get cut, but thought I'd bring this up. :)

I'm a huge Mother fan in general but the west never saw the light of day from Mother 3 outside of a fan translation, unfortunately.

I'd like to see them add Jeff as a playable character or Paula instead with their own move set, to go along with Ness.

If they do add Lucas then I hope they won't just make him a clone of Ness. I hope all clones are done with.

Was there confirmation via screenshots of video that Mario still uses the FLUDD? Wasn't a huge fan of it in Brawl. It was a 'turret' ability, stand still and aim/shoot. It felt clunky for Mario.

FLUDD should be an item really.

That would work.

Him tweeting that pic of the monado was a good indication that at worst he has considered the series and knows about, to what extent we dunno.

Yup, he knows it exists atleast, though I dont think disaster day of crisis has even crossed his mind.

I think Lucas deserves to stay to rep the end of the Mother saga.

The Mother fans in the west have played the translation anyway.

So Ness wasn't enough to represent the Mother series. I see. Honestly, I like both characters and the Mother series, but I wouldn't be opposed to Lucas being replaced by say, a villain from the said series. Of course, if Sakurai could put a Mother villain in the game without the need to remove Lucas, it would be even better. My suggestion for the third rep would be
Claus
.

Rosalina's trailer.

Thanks, guess I just didn't pay attention back when I watched that.

Went ahead and took a screenshot this time so I won't forget.

So you're idea is to switch switch Lucas out with a character that is just a color swap (Which was already one of Lucas's secondary outfits)? Or even if they use his helmet costume, in the game he had the exact same powers as Lucas. Be brave. Go New Age Retro Hippie.

Okay, yeah, Young Link could get removed because he was replaced with Toon Link.

Well, Sakurai is Japanese and I honestly don't think he cares that much if the game didn't come out outside of Japan. Plus, Earthbound was never released in Europe and I don't think lack of localization is a reason to leave a character out.

And Paula and Jeff? Eh.... I'd rather only have Ness as the only Mother character than one of his sidekicks.

Yeah.

I really don't think having a villain from one game but not the main character from said game makes much sense to be honest. But
Claus
as an addition would make me happy. I actually don't mind a third Mother character, lol.

Uh. It was just throwing out an idea, so I see no need to attack me. I am not that familiar with the Mother series, although I've played Mother 3 (but never managed to finish it, sadly I get bored of 99% of JPRG I try to play before finishing them) and I also love the soundtracks. Maybe there are some better fitting villains to put in the game instead of
Claus

Really? I thought the assist trophy for Jeff looked amazing. They could also do some really amazing and creative things with him...

I'm happy if they left in both Lucas or Ness but yeah... my main concern is clones. Just give them unique moves and a different playstyle.

Jeez where the hell are people getting in it in the head Lucas is leaving?

It's cyclical

Thread goes through the entire roster and presents arguments for why (X) is non-essential. Peppered throughout are "The way Sakurai thinks is..." (usually without basis) and "(X)'s series just isn't that popular anymore" (usually isn't true).

The only character I could potentially see being cut at this point is Snake, and that's mainly on whether Konami re-licenses him instead of the possibility of Sakurai choosing to axe him.

Jeez where the hell are people getting in it in the head Lucas is leaving?

I think based on the reception given to Earthbound on the VC, it feels only fair to keep 2 characters from the Mother franchise. I guess the idea of one leaving is the potential smaller upcoming roster and Ness has been there day one so he should be safe
As is Captain Falcon, show me Captain Falcon

Ya but did nobody here learn a lesson after crying foul over Ness leaving SSBB during development?

Even if you weren't around, theres no reason to think anyones getting cut until the big man himselfs says it.

This is my sentiment for the most part. They have far more resources and a clear development schedule. We have no reason to believe they won't have time for everyone. (Snake is a licensing problem, but a solvable one.)
