Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Here's a fun question.

We all spend so much time talking about how we'll be upset if certain characters do or do not make it in, but what about the given characters that we all take for granted?

We take them for granted because they're core Nintendo characters and they've been in every Smash game to date, but what if -- for some weird reason or in some bizarro parallel universe -- Smash Wii U and 3DS came out but Sakurai left out Mario, Link, Kirby, Samus, Yoshi, Fox, Luigi, or Pikachu?

Would you be upset if one or some of those characters didn't return as playable? Obviously this would never happen, but we all take them for granted for that reason and it's a fun "what-if" scenario to consider.

I can gaurentee you that if captain falcon and ness dont make it in there will be riots in the streets, there are so many people who are so nervous about them not making it in even tho everyone knows they're a shoe in its ridiculous, smash is what made aptain falcon who he is, and is arguably the face of smash bro.

Anyone who thinks Captain falcon or Ness won't return is an idiot, plain and simple.

They probably won't even axe Jigglypuff at this point as it's returned for two games.

Honestly at this point, I think the faces of Smash Bros. are:

Fox
Falco
Captain Falcon

Before anyone else. Almost everything about the larger popularity of the series from jokes to play styles can go back to one of these three without fail. The next tier would probably be the "duh" options with Mario & Luigi, Pikachu and Link. Marth, Ness, Jigglypuff and Sheik might fall somewhere between the two categories.

why is Falco here but not Meta Knight

I was actually thinking Snake because of the greater implications he brought with Brawl (YO THIRD PARTIES SONNN) but MK is just... I dunno. He's up there but he's more toxic than the other three. Where Fox/Falco give you shit like "Happy Feet", No Items/Fox Only/Final Destination, the 20XX meme and its variants, and the "How Fast Is Smash" video and Captain Falcon does this:

9xM0jOh.gif

And reaffirms the existance of a higher power be it God, Buddha, Raptor Mecha Jesus, Lord Helix, etc. to the masses, Metaknight turns discussions into lolBrawl/thisfuckingcharacter/SAKURAIIIIIIIIIIIIII almost 100 percent of the time.

There would be bloodshed like no other. I don't know if you were around for "no Megaman in Marvel vs. Capcom 3", but I imagine it'd be like that amplified to an exponential degree. Personally, I'll always be good if some combination of Luigi & Fox along with "extended mainstays" [re: people that are the closest to being N64 like vets despite coming later] like Pit & Marth still existed.

Oh yeah, I was here for that. I was one of the most vocally angry about Mega Man getting axed, more for reasons related to Capcom's overall treatment of Mega Man than any actual concern for MvC 3's roster.

Little did I know he wasn't axed, he was just in training for a much more important fighting game. ;)

Is this serious?

Considering the PictoChat stage, would be awesome if they made a Flipnote or Miiverse stage ....
or a Swapnote one =(

Probably Flipnote fits better since the animation .....

The more I think about it, the more I feel like Smash just has to be coming out before the holidays. The last tentpole Wii U release we have a release date for is Mario Kart 8, and that's May 30th. If Smash doesn't come out until the holidays, we're looking at a 5- or 6-month drought of any major Wii U releases... and that's a long drought even by Nintendo standards.

Seeing as it's also not in Nintendo's nature to announce a game and release it the following month or even 2-3 months later, I can't imagine we'll get any Wii U games revealed at E3 that would be coming out before the holidays. Ergo, unless Nintendo's really planning on hurting the WIi U's chances more than they already have with nearly half a year of no high-profile releases, Smash has to be coming out sometime between May 30th and the holidays to fill that gap.

I mean, right? Though, I guess I can't put any silly decisions past Nintendo, even that long a Wii U drought...

EDIT: I guess there's Yarn Yoshi, X, and Hyrule Warriors, but we know next to nothing about any of those games. I feel like Smash must be the further along in development than all of them.

I've really never considered any character to be the face of Smash Bros. Mario, Link, Kirby, and Pikachu are definitely the most prominent, though.

Fox and Captain Falcon birthed a bunch of memes, but they're far from the faces of Smash Bros.

Er, what? The turnaround from announcement to release for Nintendo's been pretty low for a while now. Maybe not that short, but it's in their history to announce games at E3 and release them that holiday season.

Yeah, and I said as much in my post. In fact, I said exactly that.

Not really sure what else to say... the point of my post still stands. :P

I misread it, but the other point you brought up in your edit stands - they've announced a lot of games and it's just as much in their history to maintain radio silence until a blowout a month or two before release. But the fact that we've got no major releases until MK8 for Wii U, still three months away, kind of proves they're willing to leave that much of a drought.

Falco is the face of competitive Smash. Which, comparatively speaking, is very niche.

He shouldn't be cut but he could be cut and it wouldn't be as much of an uproar as Fox or Falcon.

Considering you actually put the faces of the four biggest franchises in video game history under Fox, Falco, and Falcon, I don't know what sort of standard you're using to build this tier.

I'd say Captain Falcon is the face of casual Smash. Well, maybe not all of the good captain. Just one thing, really. *ahem* "FALCON! PAUNCH!!"

Captain Falcon has this odd distinction of sort of being a Smash original character, despite coming from F-Zero. Where he was just "generic bird-themed hero racer". Which was all he needed to be, F-Zero was about the cars, not the racers.

And then Captain Falcon appeared in the original Smash. With his over the top, lightning fast style, and of course, the mighty Falcon Punch. And since then, F-Zero has taken after the Captain Falcon of Smash Bros, heck the anime based on the game has the very climax be the Falcon Punch, from Smash Bros.

So, I'd argue that Captain Falcon is a Smash original that has been reverse imported into his own series. No way he'd been so well known without Smash.

It's unlike Marth, actually. Even if Melee was the west's first introduction to him, Smash Marth and Fire Emblem Marth are quite distinct from each other. Smash Marth was a bit of a showoff, what with his taunt being "Everyone! Look at me!" FE Marth is the Hero King who fights as much with the Power of Friendship as a sword, with Awakening making him nearly a mythical character. In Smash, he's just that quick guy with a sword. And that's made him pretty popular from gameplay alone. Which is quite impressive, really

what
that makes no sense

I'd argue that there really isn't a face, or faces. People gravitate towards different characters. That's the fun of it all.

For me, I almost immediately think of Captain Falcon when I think of Smash Bros.

The four of them are at the beginning of Melee, too. I'd certainly consider them to be the faces of Smash far before Fox, Falco and Captain Falcon.
