Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Huh? Would you rather only have Marth and Ike, then? Those characters you mentioned are popular. Who cares whether they're "humanoid" or are from JRPGs?

Because they look generic and are barely recognizable to people who aren't avid forum dwellers. Little Mac aside, Brawl had a FAR better selection of newcomers. I hope Sakurai has been saving the best surprises for last.

Brawl's non-directional air dodge has been seen in several clips, most recently in Little Mac's reveal video, used by the Wii Fit Trainer.

Nothing has been said about unlimited air dodging, but my money's on it being at the VERY least heavily nerfed from Brawl.

Still hope that directional air dodging does return. That's something that's seriously needed for Jigglypuff and several other characters who need the extra vertical boost.

The only nerf should be to limit it just to one air dodge like in Melee, no need to make it any more complex than that.

Air dodging more than once is a terrible idea and I'd much rather see air dashing if that were the case.

Just wanted to post first impressions of yesterday's POTD; unlike you guys, I wasn't bothered at all by its uber lateness but did get rather hyped on what seemed like either jack shit or a mega ton (like metal man Kirby hat, make it happen cap'n Samurai. Anyway, know why I was so non plusses? Cuz my mother bumping best friend in the entire world's Babbi was borneded around the same time and the suspense of that plus the POTD was blissful and kept me from hyperventilating over the incoming Babbi!

Anyways, off the cuff impression of this mechanic update is AWESOME SAUCEAGES!!1 Now those neutral jabs from Mac's trailer having inconsistencies makes some sense but it does make one wonder if that finishing move can be made to come sooner or later, or if it is statically at the end of the jab chain?

At first I was like super duper underwhelmed and was all; Samuraaaaaaai! Then I realizes the new graphical effect of Foxes kick and then came the miiverse post and I was like ; :0... :D :D :P YAAAAY, NEW MECHANICS UPDATE!! THEN I was like BAAAAAAAAAAAABBI. For those remotely interested: Her name is Hanna Marie & she is a tiny little angel thing, weighing in at 6.4 beautimous lbs & 20 inches long :D :-D @0@

Congrats man! :p

Pic of the day. Once again, Waluigi's Assist Trophy joins the collection!! …Which also means he's not a playable character. Just because you try hard doesn't mean you'll make it into the battle.

The Mario series has enough representatives anyway. There was no way to make Waluigi fit in the Wario series either, because he's never even appeared in a Wario game. Besides, out of any of the characters Sakurai could have picked, Rosalina was the smartest and most creative.

Really? So far, I think Smash 4 has had the best newcomers. Mega Man is a fan favorite and also 3rd party, Villager brings a really interesting moveset, Wii Fit Trainer came out of nowhere but looks amazing, Rosalina introduces a completely new playstyle to the series, and finally Little Mac is probably the most requested newcomer since Brawl.

Waluigi and Luma should have happened.

it's because they're not the ones he wants

I'm curious to know who you think Nintendo has left on the level of Wario, or Dedede, or Pokemon Trainer.

Sakurai's more than likely saving some great ones for last, but even then I have to argue that the newcomer choices have all been winners in my eyes.

The Villager was loooong overdue. Wii Fit Trainer was so unexpected, but when you think about it, it makes total sense that she's here. Then there's Mega Man, easily the best third party choice for Smash Brothers yet. Rosalina's the weakest pick to me, but even then that's honestly the best choice for a Mario newcomer they could have done.

The salt being thrown around by Waluigi fans right now is understandable, but I can't help but laugh at the inane "Waluigi is SO much more interesting than the boring newcomers so far" comments.

Only in some bizarro universe that I never want to visit is Waluigi legitimately more interesting than Rosalina, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, and Little Mac.

This. The Assist Trophies are far more unique/interesting than the newcomers so far,

I don't agree with this at all...Stafy and Nintendog aren't interesting, Waluigi looks like he's doing the stomp and tennis racket thing again. Mother Brain looks cool but the only way it was ever going to be on the battlefield is if it sat there and fired circle bullets...so then there's Ashley and Skull Kid.

And ultimately, while the Assist Trophies look cool, a couple matches of using them and they'll serve their purpose and quickly lose their value. Characters like Wii Fit Trainer, Megaman, and Villager will keep their "interest" in the long run simply for being playable characters.

Yea smash 4 newcomers are all awesome.
They all look like they have very unique abilities and will be a blast to use. It still blows my mind that megaman is in the game.

Waluigi's assist update was one of my most wanted "predictable" updates, just cause it has such a high quantity of dream shattering.

That comment though, I didn't imagine sakurai would pound down so aggressively on Waluigi fans hahahah. delicious.

I disagree entirely. Brawl's newcomers were mostly just filling out characters from existing franchises that were popular - Meta Knight, Wolf, Wario, Zamus, Pokemon Trainer. SSB4's is primarily characters from new franchises thus far, and every one is iconic enough to be recognized by a wide population of gamers - Rosalina being an exception, but even she is fairly widely recognized by anyone who has played a Mario game in the last couple of years.

I hope it keeps going in that direction. New franchises being repped with new characters is more interesting to me than old franchises being repped with new characters.

you're talking about a guy who wants Tingle

Rosalina, Mega Man and Villager all have way more notoriety/popularity than Waluigi and WFT Trainer is the classic Smash "WTF" character pick. DEAL WITH IT.

Mega Man is generic and barely recongnizable? Or am I reading this wrong?

You people talking about the character-filled newcomers confirmed for Smash are forgetting about the Blue Shark, mascot of the Steel Diver series and confirmed item for Smash IV. Even as merely a gun, the submarine has a highly recognizable design that can even be distinguished from real-world submarines, as well as still be recognizable even when converted into a handgun, with a unique but fitting quirk as a gun where its projectiles, torpedoes, start off slow but speed up with distance.

I would make the case that, with the above factors as my proof, even the Steel Diver submarine has more character to it than Waluigi, and it's not even supposed to be a living thing.

Tingle isn't the worst idea. Not at all sure how he'd work in practice, especially since his first game was explicitly about keeping him out of combat, but that's a minor concern in a world where Olimar and the Villager are running around pummeling people.

There's also a certain crocodile I won't bother mentioning because everybody here hates him, even though he's a more important character overall than Dedede ever will be.

Well if you're going to put it like that, now I'm curious to know how you're stacking the two against each other.

I really want Tingle myself. He could even count as his own spinoff franchise like Wario or Yoshi.

Though I don't really expect him, given America's irrational hatred of the guy and the fact that Villager already has the Balloon Fighter up-special.

Honestly, I think we should ignore the US's opinion on most things videogames. They forfeited the right with their Tingle hate. Sure you could argue that was mostly IGN, but you had the power to stop them USAmerica, you had the power and yet failed to do anything about it!

I'll admit I'm a little bummed about Waluigi being relegated to assist trophy status again (along with skull kid....:( ) but on the flip side, i really like the assist trophies revealed so far!

If anything, that gives me an anti-submarine bias, seeing as the older sistership (Olympic) to the ship my avatar is originally based on (Titanic; avatar is of Titanic II) had an attempt made against it to be sunk by a torpedo from a German U-boat. In the end, Olympic sliced into the thing's hull with one of her propellers and sank it!

Still, WWI-era merchant ships never exactly got along well with submarines.

good thing Nintendo's home consoles tend to do their best in the USA huh

God, back in the Japan Time days Sakurai's cheeky little smirk was enough but now you have to slap a stupid white face over it to say OMGIDDYGOD HE'S TROLLING!!!! XDDDDDD GUYS LOOK! TROLL TROLL TROLLOLOLOLOLO!!!!
