Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

After watching Pokemon Origins, there's literally no way they cut Pokemon Trainer and people who think so are nuts. He represents the very core of Pokemon, catching, training and the game itself. Charizard is probably the most iconic starter in the game and deserves to be in Smash as much as Pikachu or Lucario (and his buddies Squirtle and Ivysaur can come too)

So since it's a little slow in here, I'll try a topic! (I've never been successful at this before but let's try once more)

So our beloved Sakurai seems a little buff happy with SSB4 (which I think is a good thing) which characters are you really hoping get buffs and in what ways? Who would you not like to see receive any buffs or even want nerfed a bit?

For me -
- Link!!!!! For the love of all that is Holy Please buff Link! I would love for his Boomerang to be a little faster and have a little more pop again. I would love his arrow to do more damage as it takes a bit of time to charge all the way but I'd like it to have a little more reward. Strangely enough with the new ledge mechanics he may be a bit better with all his distance options at preventing people getting back on stage.

- Kirby. Not really sure why, just get him back on par with others

- Ganondorf! (One of my main's) I don't mind that he is a slower character and if he is not radically re-evaluating his moveset to suit him better and not be as much of a C. Falcon clone then get him back to his melee speed. I think Project M Ganondorf feels good if they don't change his moveset. Maybe the newer physics will help him out

- DeDeDe. (Again another of my main's) again, I default to his Project M feel. His Rocket Hammer charges a little faster/has a faster animation plus you can jump/change directions while charging and it doesn't damage him (although this has been confirmed to be returning) I would speed up his jabs a little too as they are slow!

Well that's all I can think of for now. Sorry my list is a bit biased with my main's and other characters I feel have oft gotten the shaft

The rules are best of 3 sets, but IIRC, PM uses Brawl's netcode so that could more likely result in a best of 9 played sets based on online issues
I really wish I were joking, Brawl online is fun for about 45 seconds before lag kicks in

If you have no qualms about homebrewing your console then you can use a 4gb. It just takes extra steps for it.

My Wii is a shared one with my family (In particular sister) so I've been hesitant on homebrewing it. If the Wii U had GC controller ports on the console (Instead of the Wii adapter) I'd homebrew that

Although on a serious note, has anyone ever attempted to measure Brawl APM?
I remember the Melee project had a range of 128 (M2K's Marth vs Armada at Genesis) to nearly 300 with some Fox (sounds like SilentWolf lol).

He still has the fat body shape and stubby legs in the pictures that have him use a powerup (flower, cape, raccoon suit/tail, pick your poison), so it's not small Mario. And aside from the mainline games, he's been depicted as big Mario (e.g. Dr. Mario or Mario Paint), where the body shape is the same as well.

I just find it absolutely bizarre that Sega gets so much hatred for making Sonic leaner and taller, when Nintendo has done exactly the same thing and it was perfectly fine.

Also, again, the Sonic Boom design is a one-shot. It's not made by Sonic Team, is not considered a mainline game for all intents and purposes, so my comparison to Dr. Mario is not far-fetched - it's as much of a spin-off to Sonic as Dr. Mario is to the Mario games.

I'm not here to argue if Sonic's changes are good or bad, but I think what most people are saying is that Mario's changes throughout the years has been very subtle (which is consequentially much less controversial) compared to Sonic's.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if everyone was buffed to Brawl Metaknight level with the changed ledge and knockback mechanics.

If nerfs have to happen, the obvious suspects are Metaknight and Ice Climbers (Who are tricky to balance). I don't know if Snake is returning, but if he is his moveset needs to be less tank-like and braindead. Dedede also needs his grab nerfed for the sake of the cast, but it would hopefully come with buffs to his other moves like the Rocket Hammer.

Pokemon Trainer's system needs a redo. The stamina system for the Pokemon is too short and constraining to playstyle, the weakness and resistance system is stupid and biased towards Squirtle and against Ivysaur, and the Pokeball transitions are too linear and long. I like the idea of a triple character, but you should be able to choose which Pokemon you switch to and there should be situations in a match where all three are ideal.

...did you really lose another bet from TPP?

I don't think so, but I know for a fact that Melee's APM is near the same or comparative to the APM of traditional fighting games like Street Fighter and Marvel. Members of the Smash community have attested to that and so have others in the FGC.

From what we are hearing so far, long-distance attacks are getting buffed (din's fire, Samus' charge shot), and character's unique abilities are more significant and refined (Browser/DK's strength, Lucarios' aura, ) I would not be surprised that there will be some major buffs for characters like Link and Ganondorf.

yes I'm well aware of this, I was just wondering how Brawl stacked up
because there's some MK vs ICs segments where the APM seems like it's in the single digits :lol

Oh I forgot to read the Brawl part Chiko, my bad.

Yeah there's no reason for the APM to be high at all.

Yep, did you ever use friend code battles? I would agreed with you on Random battles.

Yeah, quite a few times. I've played with people on the other side of the continent and with friends who literally live 5 minutes away from my house... unplayable.

Maybe I have bad Internet, but I do remember hearing that Brawl wifi has a minimum amount of lag no matter how powerful your Internet is...

As for the buffs discussion, give Sheik her slap back. Since combos don't exist anymore (probably), buff all of her other moves, too ^_^

minimum 3 frames
yeah I also played Brawl with my friends 5 minutes away and it lagged like crazy, I actually got owned by Din's Fire spam before I got used to the lag and proceeded to 3-stock him lol

Brawl's netcode was a bigger disappointment than tripping.

I think it was a minimum of 6 frames? Yeah it was always a mess.

I'm hoping my Main Mario gets a buff.

I say to just let people be and block any user you find too annoying, easy as pie.

I do like to get into the "artificial hype", because hey, this is the game I bought a Wii U for. When Brawl was about to be released, I wasn't a GAFer. I'd have a blast reading the Dojo, sure, but I can only imagine how much fun people had while doing so -together-, as part of a community. It's just neat to stay up, see the cracks people come up with because the update is late, and then whatever the outcome is, the reactions are bound to be memorable. It's all in good fun, for me. I love when Sakurai delivers the megatons, I love when he delivers not-so-exciting updates. Why, I daresay I enjoy people's reactions as much or even more than the updates themselves. This is a great community, and I'm happy to be a part of it.

Succinctly put good sir.

Alright guys, leave any notion that this game needs to stay pure and Nintendo-holy at the door and answer this.
If you could have ANY character in the game, who would you pick?

I'll go with Batman, or maybe Harry Potter.

Batman is much more Nintendo devout than Metal Gear. There has been a big Batman game on every Nintendo console minus the 64, some of them even being exclusive titles.

I agree.

I think a lot of it has to do with subconscious association.

"Modern" Sonic marked the beginning of the end for Sega, including their last console. ('He changed everything! Look at how much he changed!)

"Modern" Mario brought us the Galaxy games and appeared in Smash Melee. ('Mario is still Mario I guess')

People from the outside notice this, even my own mother (anecdote incoming). My nephew is really into Mario games and my mom remembered when I was really REALLY into Mario as a kid (I still am to a degree). She literally asked me if the reason they made Mario 'skinny' now was to encourage kids to be more active. She acted like it was some Nintendo conspiracy.

Yeah Star Wars would be a fun franchise to have in Smash.

And of course Star Wars like Batman has a long history of many games on Nintendo platforms but of course you can't suggest characters who didn't originate in videogames.

But seriously, Captain Planet would be so cash.

Normal attacks involve punching and summoning the elements

Down B - Earth: a downward pound of the fist to the ground with the impact causing large stalagmites to pop out on the crater

B - Fire: releases a stream of flames that erupts into small embers. I never seen him use Fire powers in the show though

Up B - Wind: flight much like Pits, only more maneuverable and he can use normal attacks for a while

Side B - Water: sorta like Surf except sideward, and he can jump off from the water which acts like a projectile

Final Smash - Heart: summons all the powers of Captain Planet causing the elements to harass the whole stage, ending with a rainbow

I'd argue Sonic's redesign is far more drastic than Mario's which is why people give it flack. I doubt Nintendo could really make a game like Sonic Generations simply because unlike the two Sonics, the Marios would basically look identical. Also you have to realise it isn't just Sonic that changed, but basically the whole cast. Just compare Eggman with Bowser and tell me Mario's arch nemesis has gone through a similar level of change.

Also, here's an official Club Nintendo poster that shows how drastic the change is.

One thing that helps Mario is that he actually looks a lot better in his new designs.

It's not so much about trying to make him "cooler" as it feeling like more polish.

When I look at that old mario art he honestly looks kinda wonky to me.

Yeah, I mean I love the old Mario games, but the newer Mario is leagues better.

However, I also feel the same about Sonic.

I sure hope that use of the word drastic wasn't serious. People will agree that the designs have been tweaked over time (Mario's overalls having a colour flip for example) but just looking at the art for SMB and all the characters are essentially identical to their current day counter parts

Also it is a good idea to look at some characters second appearance.

Yoshi's appearance in SMW is the of one out. In fact due to the early primitive 3D renders Yoshi's look did look off but they've slowly made it closer to how he was originally depicted.
