Alright. So assuming that Sakurai is ignoring the garbage data, that's 8 variations! Then there's also his custom moves...

Ripping them from melee and throwing on some prettier effects couldn't have been too hard...tho that an assumption since i'm no developer lol.

That's kind of funny in hindsight considering that the group working on Pokemon Battle Revolution barely bothered updating any of the Pokemon from their N64 and GC models.

So custom moves for fruit is namco character, you think?

His up b is the trampoline, side b is pellet thing w/ classic pac-man, down B is fire hydrant... so that's the only alternative, right?

There's also his Namco callback move:

And those might not be all of them, but they seem to all have different effects. The Galaxia ship is probably what we're seeing here:

He's got a surprising amount of complexity for such a basic guy.

The trampoline is direct from Mappy, so what if that's just the effect for the Namco move?

He uses it during the smash roundtable, it's almost definitely his Up B.

I still don't know if P flag is an item or one of his custom specials (another down B). Seems more like an item thing, though.

I initially thought it was his side special, but now I'm convinced the retro sprite cycle is either a customization for his standard special or just a taunt.

As a big arcade-era Namco fan, Pac-Man's moveset seems so amazing. I just gotta know what all this stuff does. Like the Xevious ship! And could there be more stuff? Like Druaga, Valkyrie... Libble Rabble?!

Oh man that looks good.

The environmental details are proof that you do not need super hi res textures or photo realistic details to bring out the best in visuals artistically, or look impressive. This game has a great visual aesthetic.

I hope you can get the garbage data if you keep charging or whatever for an unreasonable amount of time after the key.

I think Namco callback is pretty much taunt since the animation is different comparing to Fruit Bonus.

I think Galagxa ship is an item or a part of S-Flag. I dunno tho.

We've seen differences (albiet very minor) in animations with Kirby's Ice customization, so it's not totally unheard of.

The ship which picks up villager is probably from the S-Flag, but Pac-Man's action seems to come from him since there's a few frames before where he's not doing or holding anything.

Have we seen his grab? Maybe it's that.

I don't think it's S-flag at all.

You can only have 1 assist trophy at a time, and if s flag works like assist trophies, then the picture I just posted makes no sense.

If I had to guess, S flag is either an item that forces everyone to do the s flag pose or one of pac-man's custom moves.

It could work more like Pokeballs, which can spawn up to three at a time (in Brawl, anyway). If they're all just 2D sprites, then it's probably not as taxing as an assist trophy.

What, really? Is that confirmed for this game, or is that just in Brawl?

That's kind of a shame. I guess I won't really notice it, but it can be annoying when item matches are lacking chaos.

Brawl only had one assist trophy at a time, and limited Pokeballs to three at a time. We don't know for certain about this one, but nobody's seen more than one assist trophy on screen at once.

The special flag is probably an item though, with just this shot to go on:

There's just no confirmation as to what it does yet.

Pac-man's S flag is a different color, indicating that he might be the one who picked it up. I still hold to the idea that it's an item that forces everyone else to do the s-flag pose, probably for slightly less time than you. Almost like a global sleep. Even if it is the same time as you, it could be used to make people fall off a cliff, if they're mid-air.

I can't help but feel we are behind on stage reveals. We really need some more of those, we're sitting at like a little more than half the total new stages in Brawl for both versions, and I've said it before, but if either version has fewer stages than Brawl then splitting up the stages between the two versions was a really dumb idea then.

Plus the stage reveals have been kind of oddly limited to a few franchises. We've gotten a new Kid Icarus stage in both, but no new Kirby stage so far? Five Mario stages revealed across both versions, three Zelda stages across both, but no new Donkey Kong stage? Come on.

The stages are definitely the thing I'm most nervous about right now.

Side note--Golden Plains (the NSMB2 stage on the 3DS version) is one of the most visually boring and visually redundant stages in Smash Bros. history. But I suppose that's true to the stage's roots.

Probably not a move. His pose is completely different from the fruit move or the retro move poses.

Of the series confirmed so far, we haven't seen any stages from:

-Kirby
-Donkey Kong
-Star Fox
-Yoshi

I want to see what they're cooking up for Kirby and Star Fox the most. Obviously DK will have stages from Returns and I'm excited to see what they'll pull from it.

Yoshi I'm not as interested in since they're almost always basic takes on Yoshi's Story/Yoshi's Island, but maybe they'll have something more interesting this time around.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the same time we got the two pictures of the special flag, we got these two shots of Galaga bugs right alongside them.

They're probably unrelated to Pac-Man, since all of his sprite references and summons have the black border around them, as pointed out earlier (with the notable exception of his presumable final smash, but that's probably because it's so large it doesn't need one to stand out), and we've seen another set of classic Namco/Pac-Man references in Pac-Man's trailer that also lack the border (side smash, for reference). They could both be assist trophies, but it seems like with all the classic Namco stuff they're packing in there we've got a similar item specifically devoted to Namco.

I was watching the Nintendo Digital Event Mii explanation in Japanese and I noticed that, when Lincoln, Elijah Wood and Ice-T show up, Ice-T gets replaced by another guy. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know who he is?

That's Shinya Arino, host of Retro Game Master. (I think...)

No need to be wishy-washy, you're absolutely correct: it's Shinya Arino. (I checked the kanji in Google Translate last week, it checks out.)

DK deserves a good stage. He hasn't had a decent stage since the N64.

At this point the series at least deserves a stage that's got stronger ties to a specific DK game instead of coming across like a vague hodgepodge of generic jungle tropes and a few series elements loosely related to some kind of DK game (exception of 75M of course).
I mean Melee has two DK stages both set upon a Jungle river with water prowling klaptraps in a series where I can't even recall any instances of jungle rivers nor klaptraps that swam anywhere funnily enough. Basically it's the complete opposite of say Zelda stages which are more closely entwined with the source material.

Fortunately Return's jungle has a rather distinct visual style to it with defined stage elements that other games like Mario Golf have already made use of so hey maybe this time it'll be different, actually I'd also like to not have a jungle for a change but small steps first.

What does it say for Elijah I wonder since surely the "wood like to" pun is lost in translation?

Here's a dumb observation: why do Miis have fingers in this game? Don't they have ball hands in everything else?
The only constant of a Mii is their face. Body type depends on the game.

Every Japanese character splash to date simply reads "[character name] joins the battle." None of them have puns.

Oh, and thanks for the clarification on Miis, guys. I forgot about Mario Kart.

I agree with him entirely.

Some of the comments -

The last comment amuses me because it displays a lack of perspective. Just because he didn't have an issue with how Melee played (and neither did I) doesn't means tons of other people did have an issue. The individual's anecdotal evidence doesn't trump Nintendo's evidence if their market research showed that the larger casual audience had issues with Melee physics. They as an institution, have a better ability to garner feedback from the general gaming population than any of us.

I also contest that a game has to be "aggressive" to be competitive (though it certainly may be more fun that way). I'm glad D1 is airing his grievances because that increases the chances that feedback may be received and he is a great voice in the community. I object though to a definitive statement that the game can't/won't be competitive at this point in time.

Pellet and classic characters are the same move, outside of Galaxian which is a fruit. I don't think if the pellet is a different custom variation of the move with Mappy, but they're the same move. Check out where Pacman holds his hands for fruit vs pellet/retro

If this game is great I don't need anything else on the wii u. I will be satisfied. I am not good enough to care about proper balance so I have a feeling I'm going to love this one.
