While Zero Suit Samus was technically created in 2004, the concept of an "exposed" Samus started at the very beginning with Justin Bailey, and Zero Suit Samus in Smash is a representation of that concept, which has been used throughout the Metroid series. It's a similar situation to Little Mac. Technically he was created in 87, but since the other playable boxers in the Punch-Out!! series are unnamed, Little Mac represents all of them. So I would have ZSS at 1986.
An easier reference would be Mario and Jumpman.

Shulk is boring but Chrom isn't? Lol.

Chrom's not all that interesting, but he's significantly more charismatic than Shulk, even accounting for his inferior accent - Awakening's superior translation probably has a hand in that; as does his design and more experienced character; sharing much of the focus with Robin as opposed to Shulk's narrative monopoly on Xenoblade probably helps too. Though neither are exactly inspired choices for the roster...

Yes. I like straightforward and dedicated characters.

Though as I said before, Shulk is fine by himself, he's just outshined by every other member of his team.

Chrom at least has a plethora of lengthy support convos that give him more character, plus all the DLC map talks. Plus, I like his design better too.

So Chrom is the Marth clone and Shulk is the Ike clone, right?
I wonder if people actually still think that potential newcomers could be clones. Look at the newcomers we have in this game so far. They're incredibly unique to the point where I've never even considered that any newcomer could be a clone.

This image is outdated, but it's another reason why I want Shulk and Chrom so much. They would fill in the gap between 2007 and 2013 quite nicely: Shulk in 2010, Chrom in 2012. Mmm yes.

Pretty cool, but is there a reason why Naked Snake/Big Boss is in it instead of Snake? I mean, several of the characters are using the wrong design (Skyward Sword Zelda? Huh?), but this is literally the wrong character.

.

My personal favorite will always be Prime's Meta Ridley. Just a really vicious-looking design.

Seeing it laid out like that, it's kind of surprising how small pre-Prime Ridley's wings were. They don't even seem like they'd support him in flight.
Also, holy freaking crap at that Other M design. It's like they were out of their way to make everything as wrong and hideous as possible. It's a shame because what I played of it actually had OK gameplay.

The general line of thought seems to be that we might get Big Boss as the Snake in SSB4 because he was in the last Metal Gear game on a Nintendo system, as well as being the lead of MGSV. Though considering Sakurai's retained TP Link, Zelda and Sheik and chosen to use an older design for Pac-Man, I'm not so sure of that being the case.

The problem with giving him huge wings in the 2D installments has to do with being hurt whenever you make contact with him. Ridley having proportional wings in 2D would make them so big he'd take up more than a single screen.

Damn I was too LTTP for this! Go Shulk we'll lend us our power!

...And press on, and on, and on!

...But you mustn't be careless!

...I'll see myself out

It's the characters most recent non-Smash character artwork for all of them (except for ones where they don't exist such as G&W.) My guess is that whoever made it is ignorant of MGS and used Big Boss because he was the most recently appearing Snake.
