Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XI: Where 90% correct equals 100% wrong

I'm gonna have to stand in the "Snake is Getting Cut" camp. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

I really want every single vet ever to come back, even though I know the possibilities are low for some. I'd absolutely love everyone, even pichu.

Newcomers, however... I'm open to all first party, but certain 3rd parties...
rayman
will actually lessen my enjoyment of the game. Some will outright make me throw up...

Got the feeling somebody is going to drink some of this tonight...

Have I mentioned you're on my list yet?

Serious question: will I be able to invite my friend to 2v2 against other random online teams with me?

I'm really scared this won't be in the game. You can see there's a "Teams" subdivision in "With Anyone" in that brief 3DS trailer, but it doesn't show if there's any way to invite a friend to team up with you or not.

If this isn't in the game then I'll honestly not be putting nearly as much time into it. Even garbage like PSASBR and SFxT (sorry) lasted me a while since I was able to have fun playing 2v2 online with friends, and it seems like such a no-brainer feature... but I heard Kid Icarus Uprising doesn't have it and that that game's multiplayer's whole point is teamwork. That's worrisome.

Is there anything Sakurai's said about this that I'm not aware of, or anything in the Direct or the menus that suggests one way or the other? I think it'd be absolutely stupid if this wasn't in the game, but after the abysmal online mode in Brawl and apparently no such feature in KI: U I'd say there's reason to be concerned.

Hopefully, but I wouldn't assume anything. I think voice chat is going to be pretty essential in friend matches for setting rules, but I'm not holding my breath.

I haven't played much of MK8 online but I've heard the voice chat implementation is pretty strict, knowing how conservative Sakurai usually is with that stuff doesn't have me feeling too confident in it.

If nothing else I hope we get the dynamic replays from MK8.

I haven't really ever thought Snake would be returning, but I think the chances are pretty much zero now for many obvious reasons. Sorry for your potential loss, Snake fans. :(

Snake being gone would make me really sad, one of the largest reasons being that he's the only character who really seems to interact with others beyond just fighting them.

Even pre-Brawl, before I had played any MG games, I got super pumped for Snake as soon as they showed off his codecs. Like, holy shit! I get to actually hear one of the characters's reactions to all these weirdos from other games! I know this sounds kinda silly when talking about a fighting game, but Smash has always felt kinda impersonal. Like, these guys might as well have been fighting characters from their own series, 'cause everything is basically business as usual for them. I mean, I don't necessarily want every character to have a ton of dialog like Snake does, but even something minor like MvC does with personalized winquotes that make cute references to their own series would be cool imo. The Star Fox characters have special winquotes for each other, it could be a cool thing to extend out! Or maybe I'm weird for wanting more stuff like this in a fighting game, heh.

basically pit and palutena better have something like codecs or i'll cry

Can I ask what exactly you mean by this? When I think of personality as applied to games I think of stuff like aesthetics and writing and the like.

With "personality" i mean what differentiates smash bros from other games. i know that if you ask different people "what makes smash bros??" you are going to get different answers. Still, most of us would agree in many things. We would agree in some of the things that make smash bros.

When i say that sakurai is simplifying the games and, because of it, the games are losing personality... i mean that we are losing some (only some, obviosly) of the things that allow us to recognize smash bros. For example:

(i already complained about this after the 3ds tournament)

In smash bros you fight in a floating platform for a reason. The main reason why you are scared of getting hit is not because your percent goes up, is because once your percent is higher, you might fall of the stage. And it may be difficult to come back, especially because your oponent can make it difficult for you to come back and because many characters used to have a hard time coming back once the were at high percent. At least thats how it worked before... (in melee and, to a lesser extent, in brawl).

Probably, in the past, you have had the oportunity to explain to someone new to smash how to play so he could start playing right in that moment with you and your friends/family. But they wanted to start playing NOW!! so you didnt have much time. Probably, you told him/her more that once that he shouldnt fall of the stage because it was dangerous (and, also, because he was scared of falling :p) and, if he did fall of, that he should MASH jump -> then upB!! Its an amazing feeling to play smash for the first time, fall of the stage for the first time (and the second, and the third... you never lose that feeling) and try to come back. And its even better if you manage to come back to the stage alive. Maybe, if he had a hard time coming back, you told him/her to choose characters like jigglypuff, kirby, peach (with her float) or other characters like that for his first matches because, unlike everyone else, they have an easy time coming back (this fully proves that the "ledge game" is indeed something that a new player needs to identify about smash bros)

But why should i fear to fall off the stage in the new smah games!? The game protects me from my rival preventing me from coming back:
1. theres the brawl air dodge that prevents my oponent from jumping of stage and trying to hit me because i can dodge his attack.
2. like you probably saw on the 3ds tournament, now theres a lot of characters with crazy upBs that cover a lot of horizontal/vertical distance
3 AND, the new ledge mechanic that prevents my oponent from stealing the ledge (at least in most cases)

With all that, if i am off stage, instead off scared i feel safe because, even before falling of the stage, i know that i am probably going to come back (if i am not at a huge high percent). So, if you have to explain someone new to smash how to come back to the stage in smash 4... he/she would probably feel what i described above at the begining but, after some time, he/she would learn that its not actually that dangerous to fall of stage.

The difference between the ability of coming back to the stage in melee vs smash 4 is crazy... is like its not smash bros (in that aspect) anymore

And, like that, part of smash "personality" is lost.

I love to see Smash getting more talkative characters. The interactions between Pit and Palutena & Robin and Lucina in their trailers were pretty awesome

I don't think Snake's guaranteed to be out yet. The only thing worrying me is that time is simply running out, but we don't know what kind of arrangement Konami and Nintendo could have. I'm not saying 100% one way or the other until we see the back of the box and if Konami is credit or not.

Still really hoping for a trailer where Snake is being psychologically toyed with by Mewtwo and then Ness & Lucas show up to have a psychic showdown against him.

Edit- I guess it would need a genuine newcomer in it... I guess nothing's stopping Ridley from swooping in and interrupting the showdown *shrugs*
