Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XI: Where 90% correct equals 100% wrong

The new angry birds mode seems way more fun or satisfying than home run contest. Hopefully the explosions and chain reactions make good sound effects to make it trigger the brain's reward center. Hope it's fun.

So I just saw a post on smashboards in the K. Rool thread.

Apparently the attack that Kremlings use in Smash Run is based on that DK64 cutscene.

Seems like grasping at some very thin ice if you ask me, but the animation is really similar.

Obviously, this means that K. Roolis in because... reasons

Also, I can't really tell, but are the Kremlings redesigned in this?

I don't think crocodiles attacking by biting is really sourced from anywhere in particular.

And it seems like they're using the Kritter design that's been in all games since... King of Swing, I guess?

hahaha, I wouldn't be surprised if that's actually referencing that cutscene. There's been more obscure animations and references in Smash before. Great catch though.

Really do hope King K. Rool is in.

Also, I donno if this has been mentioned before, but I think Mii Fighters will be the new Fighting Wire Frames/Polygons Team. In the E3 trailer, it's hardish to tell, but it seems like not only are they fighting multiples of them, but it also seems like the ones being fought are multiple kinds of Mii Fighters.

It's not so much just the fact that they're biting, it's the whole arm animation and everything, it looks exactly the same.

I think if they just wanted to simply make the kritters attack by biting, they wouldn't have done such a wacky pose with the arms.

There are possibly three tiers of selecting which Mii you play as: Token on Mii, select the fighter from the portrait, select your Mii from side-scrolling menu contained in your selection box.

Multiple people could be Mii Fighters, but not the same Mii.

Just saw the PotD.

It's not Ness but I'll take it lol. Also, a whole month or so until the blowout of leaks. It's gonna be crazy this month.

What's up with this bomb? This looks like the stadium for the Home-run Contest, but there's no bat. Once you touch the bomb, it begins to count down. Give it enough damage and launch it at the right time…then once the bomb's countdown hits zero…!!

zlCfzSPk7xwoE8XJDq

...It goes BOOOOOM! Not only will the blast destroy targets, but it'll also cause a chain reaction by using shattered walls and bomb blocks--all of which contributes to you getting a high score!! This is a new activity that combines the concepts of Target Smash and the Home-run Contest--it's called Target Blast! Your final score is the total you rack up over two rounds. Of course, your Target Blast scores contribute to your Global Smash Power, too.

Happy early birthday Sakurai lol

It's not so much just the fact that they're biting, it's the whole arm animation and everything, it looks exactly the same.

I just figure it's a pretty typical "leans back and throws head forward" animation, because it's difficult to add impact to a bite animation otherwise. I mean, it's possible that it's a reference to it, I just don't really expect many references to DK64 based on past precedent, especially such a minor part of it.

Though... I guess past Smash games haven't been as unwilling to reference DK64 as I thought? A lot of Diddy's moveset is based around it (before it got integrated into the Returns games). I dunno!

I'm really surprised we haven't had more leaks yet. There is such a huge development team. Sal Romano's contact was great, but he doesn't even have the whole picture. I want that whole picture. We got Brawl's roster months before release.

Sakurai and team are pretty amazing. It's like they do this on purpose.

In my mind, it goes like this: They come up w/ an idea for a smash run enemy, then they discuss how to animate it. One employee goes home and plays DKC1/2/3, one employee goes home and plays DK64. They both come back w/ ideas about how they should attack. DK1/2/3 says 'they just walk around, so maybe we could do... *shows very basic attack animation*." the DK64 employee says "yeah, they don't do much in DK64 either, but in this one part, he does this:"
M1kNgi.gif

Whole team starts laughing. "Yeah, we have to do that now"

Yeah Diddy's moveset has quite a few DK64 references, someone on smashboards said that Sakurai does like DK64 but I don't know if that's actually based on anything other than the fact that Diddy has a lot of DK64 moves.

I really want to know what else the DK series is getting, we saw DK and Diddy very early but then nothing else, not even a stage. K. Rool based on DK64 and with alt colours based on the different types of Kritters is something I want so much.

Did we really no for sure what the whole roster was before January? I honestly can't remember.

And while it is a huge team, there's also huge repercussions for breaking NDA. Also, according to Sal Romano's contact, it seems like they break up who knows what, which both makes it hard to leak everything, and also makes it easier to figure out who leaked shit if someone chooses to do so.
Hell, even with Pokemon X and Y, when we got similar leaks to the Gematsu ones back in May 2013, it was weird. The leaker knew some stuff from the early game, but then nothing past the middle aside from Mewtwo having a second new form, which is from way at the end of the game. Plus, he somehow didn't know about Mega Evolution, despite them being the biggest new thing in X and Y. It makes me think they divide up who tests what and know about what really, really well.

Man, it's so close to release and we still know next to nothing. So many modes, characters, items and stages still unannounced.

It sounds crazy, but Sakurai comes up with everything by himself before development even begins.

There's also ...this attack which doesn't reference anything.

Also, if Bowser hasn't been shrunk here, there's no way K. Rool can be playable in the game, he'd have to be massive to not be smaller than his mooks.

Do you (or anyone) have a link to where ever the leak was first posted/talked about? I'm curious to see what the reactions were before we knew it was legit.

There are leaks, people just don't know if it is legit or fake yet.

I have a hard time believing a word of the enormous leak compilation from Smashboards we discussed. None of them are phrased or structured like past leaks. They feel like every other fake leak: some American kid writing out an over explanation of content because their contact left the company. As if leaving the company releases you from your NDA and doesn't just make you immediately identifiable.

When we get a leak it won't be full of explanation, I don't think. The Dragoon leak from Brawl was the lengthiest leak we even got and that was only to explain how the Dragoon parts worked.

Did people even believe the Brawl leak at the time?

I wasn't there for it, but the pre-Brawl leak climate was different than ours now. There weren't regular major disconfirmations and most leaks stayed live until pictures started coming. As such, Brawl's roster just sat on the list of other text-only rosters until that was the one confirmed. But lots of people did dismiss it because of ROB.

Alright, some Brawl leaks, for reference.
ChaosZero-October 31st, 2007: http://i.imgur.com/1avyxRy.jpg
Things leaked:
Most of the roster.
Dragoon Parts.
Final Destination being back.
Nyasenaya-Leaked a few times. Probably easier to just view all her Smashboards posts, but if you don't feel like that, the majority can be found in these links: First leak: http://smashboards.com/threads/brawl-playtest-massive-spoilers.126260/#post-3295086 (Note that the OP was deleted by a mod, but you can get the gist of what happened from the replies). Second leak: http://smashboards.com/threads/brawl-will-be-delayed-in-the-us-again.129404/ One thing worth noting is she claimed Peach was much more risque in early Brawl designs, which explains why the final Brawl Peach is the ugliest model of Peach ever made.
Leaks:
Mario Kart Wii having a dedicated channel, 12 player online.
Sonic reveal date.
Megaman not being in Brawl.
Olimar being in the game.
Ness and game & watch returning.
The second delay.
Brawl being on a dual-layered disc.
Europe getting the game hella late.
Toon Link being in the game.

If anyone knows of any others, I'll update this post.

Tbh, I didn't think ROB would be that far out, since he had just appeared in MKDS.

Some of the leaked characters were weird though and since there are lots of random leaks it's hard to focus on one that might be legit.

it had to do with the fact he was confirmed for a SSE enemy I think

Way to go Smashboards.

Edit: This is a mod lock of what was confirmed as a legitimate leak, who also edited the OP to say it was all lies and "yaaaay", in case you didn't read Hatchtags links above.

I don't get how Kremlings confirm K. Rool.

It's just DK fans being happy over the fact that the apparently forgotten main antagonist of the DKC series that quite a few people grew up with is being referenced in game for once (trophies are boring and static so nobody really cares about them - unless it's some character that's never had a 3D model).

Maybe not confirm but I think it's a good sign. Why wouldn't they just include enemies from the new DKC games? Why reach that far back if there's no K. Rool at all?

Because they're DK enemies.

Kremlings aren't that old and forgotten, iirc their last appearance was in Wii

I'll knock DK64 for many things but I did enjoy the sillier characterisation of the Kremlings and the little scenes before each new world of K.Rool and his blundering henchman, I'm pretty sure I was rooting more for them in that game.
Plus Rool's shifting between cliche serious business villain and complete goof is fun, nuts to the haters.

I don't get how Kremlings confirm K. Rool.

They don't, it's just nice to see that they still got used even when the tikis could've just been the only mooks referenced.

Speaking of which it'd be nice to get some of the actually forgotten Nintendo villains as trophies this time around, Tatanga for a 3DS trophy seems like something that should happen.
And now I'm sad that we've got like 4 Mario themed stages on the 3DS entry alone and not one uses Super Mario Land as a base, no 3D land doesn't count.
Maybe Wario will bring the land goods

Ugh...the Cellda rumor strikes again...and no Mega Man? I simply just don't believe this. It's bull in my book.
Mega Man is not in the game.
wrong
If this person absolutely knows there are only 35 characters, why not reveal the rest? If he is so sure Mega Man is not in, then surely he must know who is in if he knows the exact number of characters.

you really have to admire their belief in megaman back in the brawl days

Yeah, they're really standing on straws here.

Sorry, my attention was grabbed.

Those Miiverse pics on the last page was some of the best stuff I've seen ever regarding Smash Bros. MC Hammer Kirby, Lady Falcon, Rosalina & Ice Climbers at the movies, Super Smash Summer Scramble, LETS DAANZ, Mario the contracted clean up crew for the Inklings (this really needs to be a thing like how Mario's the ref in the OG Punch-Out), "Bair and Nair" and Captain Jigglypuff are too good.

Agreed 100%. (Finally got a little bit of internet but have to browse on a phone so the gifs won't chew my data lol)

Personally my reason for doubting the Brawl leak was Toon Link's name. To me, there was no character in the Nintendo canon named Toon Link. Even if the model WAS Wind Waker Link, I believed he would still be called Young Link. Smash to me was all about recognizable characters with recognizable names. Nowadays we have characters named "Villager" and "Wii Fit Trainer".

Somehow a character named Pokémon Trainer didn't tip me off to the possibility of interpreted titles.

Maybe not confirm but I think it's a good sign. Why wouldn't they just include enemies from the new DKC games? Why reach that far back if there's no K. Rool at all?
Because they're memorable Donkey Kong enemies in a mode that contains over 70 enemies so far. The model looks to be recycled from Mario Super Sluggers, so there's not a ton of work involved in bringing it over. Kritter doesn't hint at K. Rool any more than the Kid Icarus enemies hint at Medusa/Hades.
