Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

Well Marth is the mascot of the series, so his choice is obvious.
Roy was put in cause Sakurai wanted to add a Marth clone.
Ike was the main character of the recent Fire Emblem at the time of Brawl's release, so he was picked.
Robin and Lucina are, to be honest, pretty logical choices, I guess? I mean, Lucina is canonically a Marth clone, and thus easy to implement, and Robin is the player avatar, which is also a unique feature of Awakening.

And I think there's already more than enough Fire Emblem in the Smash series currently. <_<

I've never played Fire Emblem so I can't speak on main characters and stuff but I guess that makes sense. Yeah, there's plenty of FE characters in the current Smash, I think most of the fans should be happy with the representation, now that there's a magic character too.

I'll just whine a little bit.

You know, Sakurai said that if an alt had even a slight difference in how they play, it would get a character slot, and that's the reason we have Lucina, Dark Pit and Dr. Mario, right?

What doesn't make sense to me, is that Dark Samus, who would play really different from Samus, who is an Assist Trophy that demonstrates these differences, doesn't get a new character slot but Dark Pit gets one.

This is the only thing bugging me about this game. I don't care about the cuts, I don't care about the stages. (I do care that the CSS is odd, but that's more of an OCD-like thing). But if this one thing is valid for one, two characters, it should be valid for everyone. And it wouldn't even be too much work. You already have the AT model, with a small fraction of the moveset complete.

And for some reason this made me think about Dark Pit alt colors. I have no idea of what they're going to be, because every single one of them will look like Pit
It's like a completely different situation. Dark Samus has completely different moves from Samus (as shown by her AT), so she'd be a legit newcomer, not even a clone newcomer. The Dark Samus alt color plays literally exactly the same as Samus, it doesn't even have a model change.

Well, Zipzo is done answering stuff for the day. He's going again tomorrow, as well, to check out more of the demo and to give us more info.

I asked him some things and here's what he said.

You mentioned Meta Knight's attacks have actual start-up now. However, what I want to know is do his tilts, smash attacks, and aerials still have laser priority? Laser priority is what it says on the tin, his attacks act like Falco's lasers and cannot be clanked/clashed and he cannot attack projectiles like Samus' missiles. Do you remember seeing MK ever clanking or clashing with any attacks? In Brawl, the only attacks that could clank were Tornado (that's what it allowed it to have the "priority" it had) and Drill Rush.

Zipzo said:
Hmmm...I did say that I was unsure of Tornado's priority, and I still am. Meta-Knight exploration may be high on my list tomorrow as well. It was not Brawl tornado though. I can assure you that.

Revven said:
Speaking of the Tornado, you said it doesn't last as long and it doesn't rise anymore. What I want to know is, does it still do 22% despite dealing less hits? And, also, did anyone try (when you played as MK) to challenge the Tornado? If not then I guess you probably don't know if it has laser priority like his other attacks. I want to know because what Project M did to fix MK's tornado "priority" was by giving it laser priority, meaning characters could throw out hitboxes and at worst they would just trade with the tornado (taking only a couple of % but knocking MK out of the tornado).

Zipzo said:
This kinda falls in line with the first bit.

Revven said:
You say that low% combos are possible, but low% combos existed to some degree in Brawl -- how low% are we talking? 20%? 50%? Sheik's Ftilt in Brawl, for example, could lock characters until 50% and then the characters would start to go into their tumble state (higher %age and all). Is the threshold 50% where things start to become harder to combo? Also, would you say that there's a chance to combo into a finisher at higher %s?

Zipzo said:
That's a good guess. I was going to say after around 60% your opponent seemed to start flying a bit far, giving you little room to miss frames on a follow up before your hit stun wore off.

(The part above is really interesting to me).

Revven said:
One other thing, did you notice if you could DI normally at low%s? In Brawl, you couldn't DI during the non-tumble state and that's what lead to things like DDD's chaingrab being a thing. Is DI'ing reimplemented into the non-tumble state or could you not notice while you were playing?

Zipzo said:
Chain grabbing is basically now impossible because the throw distance seems to be relatively increased and also sort of lodges the characters too far in the air. DI is definitely in but it's slight. It's definitely there though. Not sure about the timings of tumble state and what not.

Revven said:
Oh and is there any shield drop lag like in Melee? Or, is the shield drop more like Brawl? What about shieldstun? Could you shieldgrab almost everything that hit your shield?

Zipzo said:
Attacking Shields were a lot safer. It was a real street fighter feel in that you could pressure an opponents shield without it being really cheap, akin to pressuring an opponents block. Shields also break easier so you can't just sit there in shield.

Mostly mechanical related but I think everyone would be interested in some of this stuff to begin with -- hence why I asked (even though we'll know definitively next week).

but she doesn't play any different than samus, so she's an alt... if dark samus had for example increased knockback on her forward smash, she'd be another character instead of an alt costume.

When is the OT for the 3DS version going up, IntelliHeath?

It should be out in few days. Problem with Smash is that we are getting more information at last minutes so we have to fill out the content with those information. I'm quite sure that we are done with the contents itself for now since we will update OT more later on when we get more information on those subjects.

It's all down to graphic job right now. I would like to set a deadline for ourselves to have OT out by Monday or Tuesday before the game get out.

We're really sorry about the delay.

Good job Revven. If anything, I'd really like to hear more of what he has to say about how fast shield canceled runs put you at a neutral state and if there's any time or delay between doing things like:

Dash forward - shield - dash back
Dash forward - shield - f-tilt
Dash forward - shield - d-tilt

On characters like Marth and Pit.

Cleaner screen grab.

Who is "we"?

All these impressions are making Smash 3DS look fantastic.

Those three weeks will be a bitch.

I can't help but feel weird.
On the one hand, little disappointments including the lack of Pajamas Toon Link, Dark Pit and Doctor Mario being playable, Ice Climbers being cut, and what seems to be a pretty dull-looking CSS and SSS end up making me lose hype.
I shouldn't feel like this, though. I've been given daily updates about the game for more than a year, awesome trailers for every newcomer showing off gameplay and prerendered footage, and playable demos being livestreamed from E3 and Comic-Con. I've been completely spoiled. It's all so amazing, and I know I'm going to play the shit out of these games when they come out.
I should really appreciate how lucky I've been to see all this prerelease info, but right at this moment, I can't help but feel disappointed.

I think that's totally fair. Being disappointed or dissatisfied is one thing; blaming it on developer laziness or bias is another thing, and you're not doing that at all. :) Plenty of people are naturally going to be disappointed about one thing or another when it comes to the new Smash, but those of us who are reasonable know that Sakurai and his team have seriously worked their asses off to bring us two games this massive, polished, and well-made. Lazy or biased is the last thing they are.

Don't worry Boss Doggie, Wolf will be exclusive to the Wii U version, along with King K. Rool, Ridley, and Mewtwo. Imagine Nintendo releasing their own version of the "Disney Villains" line in Amiibo form.

So now that Zipso is done for the day, and presuming his impressions are accurate are you:

A) Really Hyped: (largely as a result of game mechanic improvements/detail of characters)
B) More Hyped: (mechanics may not be what you want, but character detail sounds great)
C) Same Hype Level (jury is still out until you get your own hands on the game)
D) Less Hyped (mechanics are offputting/absence of character details are disappointing)

The amount of content sakurai would have to add to make smash appeal to everyone would mean that it would be in development for 10 years and cost more money than they could ever make back. He has to pick and choose, and It has to be way more stressful for him to KNOW all the things fans want but not be able to add them all because of lack of unlimited time and money.

At the very least, I expect the clown car to change colors because of team colors being practically a necessity for every Smash Bros. character.

Also, don't know if this was posted yet but someone else is doing an AMA on Reddit about the demo and they confirmed that BONUSES ARE BACK FOR MULTIPLAYER!!

The problem with Dark Samus, ironically, is that she's too unique to work as a character split off from Samus. She can't even use the Screw Attack (Because it wasn't in the Phazon Suit she absorbed) and she never uses the Grapple Beam or Bombs.

Hope for a new character with Smash 5 (The real smash 5, not Smash 4 Wii U).

I mean it's pretty impossible for me to be more hype than I was. :-p The mechanics, for me are just different and not necessarily good/bad. They're interesting.

I really can't call it til I play it.

Soooooooo I guess "same hype", but that hype was already super-high lol.

Sounds excellent. Will be very interesting to see how this game evolves

I can't wait for Dark Pit to get cut in the next smash bros and for a bunch of people to pitch a fit about it.

I'm fine with clone cuts aside from a few that need to be retooled into their own distinct characters (Falco, Ganondorf).

I couldn't care less about Wolf or Toon Link or Dr. Mario. Dark Pit will be the same.

At the rate this is going, I'm gonna call it now and say that my biggest disappointment with the game will be...

The music.

Go balls out. Use a real orchestra. For everything.

Or Mario Kart 8 spoiled me, I don't know.

The fuck is an AKB48?

Sounds like a brand of lucubrating oil.

After today's info, I am still as hyped as ever. I know there are some things people don't like, but I think these changes are helping characters become really diverse and different from their previous iterations. I like how landing lag and cooldown is so unique depending not only on the character, but the moves used as opposed to a universal standard in Melee and Brawl. No matter what you think about the roster, the diversity is astounding. Though Sakurai could dial it back a bit on the counter moves, WE GET IT.

Zipzo is going back tomorrow so hopefully we can get some more info, and of course, COLORS.

This is pretty much exactly what I wanted from Smash's fighting engine. Greater Landing lag is a fair exchange for powerful attacks. No wavedashing, dash dancing is perfect, instead we get faster rolls (which is the way it should've been in the first place). Fast falling being fast is good too, because it gives you the ability to define your own descent. Smash's fighting mechanics should be obvious to all players, no secret methods to uncover. All of this sounds great.

I agree 100%. The Melee formula wasn't perfect, and Brawl certainly wasn't either. I think they are approaching a great system with the new game though and that is what we should be happy about. We shouldn't be disappointed that it isn't exactly like Melee in the slightest. Sounds even better to me so far.

Like a boss

Nice.

Wolf really isn't a clone. The only moves he shares (specials) are still highly-differentiated.

I'm not a Wolf fan, but it sucks for fans of his moveset that he's cut.

The problem with Dark Samus, ironically, is that she's too unique to work as a character split off from Samus. She can't even use the Screw Attack (Because it wasn't in the Phazon Suit she absorbed) and she never uses the Grapple Beam or Bombs.

That didn't stop Lucas from getting PK Fire, PK Freeze, and... his entire moveset was stolen from Kumatora. I don't think it really matters. People are just pissed that Sakurai decided to go with Dark Pit when Dark Samus and Dixie Kong would have been perfectly viable clones instead.
