Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

If they plan on holding back veterans for DLC, they sure as hell better be free.

I don't think they're intentionally held back, hell, if you believe the Gematsu leak, Lucas got cut for time constraints. It'd be easy to believe Wolf was to, and the others (Snake, Ice Climbers, Mewtwo) probably didn't get in because of character rights, troubles with doubles, and just choosing not to make him, respectfully.
I'm guessing there'll be a good deal though. Either veterans will be bundled with a newcomer, or free and the newcomers aren't, or maybe you get them free with an Amiibo, I donno. But going off Mario Kart 8 DLC, there's no reason to believe it'll be a rip off.

Japanese demos go live again in 10 minutes at one location, and in an hour and 10 minutes at the other 2:

Given Sakurai's recent EDGE essay, I think they'll go by a different method in determining how to balance the game.

Tier lists and character imbalances that can only be noticed at high-levels of play is something he's not interested in.

I think that's a bit presumptuous to make. For example, many of the changes we've heard about from the E3 and retail demos do a lot to fix a lot of the problems Brawl had at both low & high level play or especially high level play. That being said, "nerf something because casuals find it annoying" is something ALL fighting game developers do to some degree, including Capcom.

Well for people who actually like Lucas, there's always a chance that he might be a Ness alt and that PK Freeze is a custom special. Doesn't fix the rest but it would at least be something.

Lucas was cool for his A attacks, his specials were whatever.

It'd still be a pretty big letdown. I mean, if he's an alt and the announcer actually announces him as Lucas I'll take it over not having him at all, but his smashes were so awesome in Brawl. Hate to lose him as a unique character.

Guessing it'll be another Wolf situation where Ness gets a Lucas-like costume, but not an actual alt so that Lucas can still be DLC.

Well there still the DLC leak maybe......:|

I'm of the frame of mind that the development team is putting forth all of their effort towards cramming all that they can into the final game. I don't think they've even started the planning stages of DLC yet. I think DLC is coming eventually (ex: six months between MK8 release and first DLC), but anybody who claims to know of the plans are full of it.

People shouldn't have to pay extra for content that should have been in the game.

Sakurai said from the outset that veterans would be cut and people would be disappointed. Considering the newcomers we've gotten and the impressions that claim it feels like every character was remade from scratch I don't think the entitlement frame of mind works here.

Oh, also:

Yeah, at least they get their character. ;_; I want Wolfie-poo!

Yeah I know but like I said it would be something. I'm not sure why he was taken out if. Maybe they didn't want characters with the same specials but different A moves to have the most of the same custom specials and they didn't know/feel like giving him new ones but people seem more upset that the actual character isn't in the game. Some people may think being an alt is worse but some might be happy with it.

Because he was in Brawl. You'd think making sure every unique fighter is in the newest game would be a top priority, but evidently not.

I'm happy ROB managed to stick around for SSB4. And G&W returns too so I'm thankful for both my mains returning. I'll pour one out for those who have lost their mains.

We'll see but he certainly gave that impression:

This made the game less accessible for novice players and it basically ended up becoming a Smash Bros. game for hardcore fighting fans. I personally regret that, because I originally intended the Smash Bros. series to be for players who couldn’t handle such highly skilled games.

...

While other fighting games continue to work on honing this tournament aspect, I think that we need to move in a direction where there is more of a focus on inexperienced gamers. Companies that release products that target a very vocal, visible group of gamers tend to receive good reactions and they may feel good about it, but I think that we have to pay special attention to the less vocal, not so visible group of players, or else games will just fade away.

There are so many other games out there which are geared to tournaments. It is important for us, however, to maintain the game’s status as a kind of ‘rough’ party game in which anyone can play without feeling too much pressure over winning or losing. We therefore want to keep a nice balance in which a wide variety of events can occur in the game, some of them quite outrageous. With this, Smash Bros. isn’t just a fighting game, it is an opponent-based action game.

Addressing some of the E3/demo feedback is certainly reassuring to see.

On my way to test out the new Smash, friends! Rain won't deter me from getting my hands on this game. :D I can try to check things as you request, but I'm only one guy. (Trying to meet up with CHusson, though!)

Preach. Dat NAir, amirite?
(Even though Lucas's specials are all better than Ness's as well.)

When a new entry in a fighting game series comes out, it's typically much safer to assume that some characters will be cut. It's not an uncommon occurrence, and it doesn't necessarily have to come along with some nefarious plot to sell them as DLC later.

Rosters change over, it happens. All of the characters that didn't make it into this edition of the game make sense to me, given some of what we're receiving instead. If you lose a character you like, well, yeah that sucks, but this is a new game and there's certainly enough of a roster to be had to find someone new to enjoy playing as.

What are your feelings on Street Fighter

Not just Street Fighter but also Guilty Gear, King of Fighters, Soul Calibur, Tekken, Mortal Kombat etc. Marvel vs Capcom 3 has FEWER characters than Marvel vs Capcom 2 (though its obvious why to anybody paying attention). Pretty much every fighting game series with more than one sequel. There is NO guarantee that any particular character will be in the next game in the series. Hell we lost non-clone characters when we moved from Melee to Brawl, why would Smash 4 be necessarily different?

I'm guessing that characters from older SF games weren't in SFIV? If so, then yes.

Characters come and go in every game in the series. And in every fighting game series except the extremely limited.

But it's probably easier to stamp your foot a lot than think about it critically.

Peach buffs and nerfs please!...well rephrase, any changes would be good to know.

Not as official as Wolf being confirmed out. I'd say there being a Wolf costume for Fox is about as much confirmation as you can get without having Sakuri say it himself.

Yeah, pretty much. The only thing we have to go on is basically the game box doesn't have Konami on it or the ESRB leak thing, I forget which it was that made people come to that conclusion.

Could you officially confirm and describe the relative ease of access of custom moves on the CSS?

While characters being cut from a fighting game is always unfortunate and I can't think of a good reason why one would actually want that, it's also an unreasonable expectation to want every single character back in merely because they've appeared before.

I can't really think of a fighter with multiple sequels that has kept everyone...not even DOA

Check and see if Galactaknight is really full on Alt, with a different mask and wings and everything.

Maybe they don't want to play against them ;0
