I swear there was an interview with Sakurai earlier in Smash 4's development, like around E3 2013, when he mentioned The Pokemon Company DID have a strong role in influencing his choices.

I mean, all the Pokemon (even Jigglypuff at a time) are big, main-character mascots. I really wonder if, say, Sakurai asked for Jynx, would they let him?
I get the impression that The Pokémon Company is hands-on/protective once Sakurai makes his choices (alternate color restrictions, for example), but the initial choices themselves are made by Sakurai.

Something has to explain the lack of proper shiny alts for Charizard and Lucario and the half measure for Greninja. Or two half measures for Greninja, as he has the half black skin, and then a full purple skin. Both sort of emulate the shiny without actually being the right colors.

Maybe they don't want shinies to be seen as just regular palette swaps and must be treated as something special.

Jiggly and Pikachu get grandfathered in because their shiny skins in Smash were skins in Smash before Shinies were even a thing lol

Yeah, I imagine the Pokemon Company's more controlling of specific brand protection things than flat out character choices. If it was really all up to Game Freak no way would Jigglypuff still be in.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
One thing I noticed is a lot of promotional ads for Smash make sure to have Pikachu's ears sticking out of the border...it's not like this in the actual game, but I recall like on various promotional material he was the only character who stuck out of the border.

To the people among us who live(d) in Japan, how important would you consider Jigglypuff as Pokemon mascot, or a face of the franchise? Was she prominent back in the Gen 1/2 era (late 90s to early 2000s, i.e. the frame of release for both Smash 64 and Melee)? How is it nowadays?

I'm just curious because Jigglypuff in the Western regions seems to be considered to be "too girly" to be marketed, and generally considered an "odd choice" to be put into Smash, but I've heard quite often that Jigglypuff is or at least was much more popular in Japan than in America/Europe.

She was very prominent in the TV show, so much that I don't think she would be in smash if not for the anime.

Something something tears shed about Duck Hunt.

Sakurai once again confirms via GameInformer that Ice Climbers worked on Wii U, but no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get Ice Climbers to work without using a ton of machine power, so they dropped them. It's a shame, but I've (mostly) gotten over it.

Fuck the 3DS version

;-;

Recurring character in the cartoon during the early seasons. At this point, for my circle of friends she's defined more by being a smash character than a character in her home game series, like Fox, Capt Falcon, and G&W

Jigglypuff is still important to Pokemon, she was in games such as Pokemon Conquest and even was featured in Pokemon Art Academy, really, Jigglypuff might not be as popular as she was before but she's certainly still popular, I'd argue even more so than Greninja.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
Who knows, maybe Sakurai will make IC available.

With that said, the cost would be having separate DLC character purchase. Are you fine with that?

Jigglypuff still occasionally shows up in more recent Pikachu shorts. Heck, even the famed Jigglypuff with the microphone pen is in Japanese X/Y anime new intro. She's in a lot of Pokemon art merchandising too now. And don't forget she's one of the main Pokemon in Pokemon Conquest (Pikachu didn't even make the cover of that one). Heck, Wigglytuff was a main character in a Mystery Dungeon game and was also given a spotlight episode in latest X/Y episode that just aired in Japan.

I think Pokemon Company also wanted to ensure she was taken care of in Smash 4. She went from dead-eyed to adorable to closely match her official artwork now. She went from Nerf McNerfsen in Brawl to "Rest kills at around 65%, bitches!"

I'm almost tempted to post pictures of photo-realistic Pokemon...

To spark some conversation, here is a new Wii U stage roster prediction wishlist courtesy of yours truly! The stages are as follows:

Smash_WiiU_stagesnew_zpsf468fdea.png

Row 1:

Battlefield - Final Destination - Mushroom Kingdom U - Mario Galaxy - Luigi's Mansion

Bowser Land: Based on the carnival levels from 3D World, Hisstocrat serves as a stage hazard whilst his minions rise out of the ground with new platforms.

Row 2:

Yoshi's Island - Gamer - Skyloft - Bridge of Eldin

Yoshi's Paradise: Inspired by New Island, has mischievous monkeys and Nep-Enuts as hazards.

Forsaken Fortress: Similar to Shadow Moses with the search lights, the Helmaroc King is a stage boss.

Row 3:

Orbital Gate - Lylat Cruise - Coliseum - Castle Siege

Sunset Shore: Uses a shadow filter in the foreground, with explosions and effects able to light up the area.

Frozen DK Island: Inspired by both Returns and Tropical Freeze. Starts as a tropical climate with the giant Tiki Fortress sticking out of the volcano. The Snowmad ship with eventually fly by and fall on the Tiki Fortress while freezing the island.

Row 4:

Town & City - Smashville - Kalos Pokemon League - Pokemon Stadium 2 - Garden of Hope

Nimbasa City: A Pokemon Stadium successor taking place in said city. The stage transforms into Fairy, Ghost, Fighting, and Bug types.

Row 5:

Boxing Ring - Great Cave Offensive - Halberd - Magicant - Onett

Big-Bean Vine: Based on Kirby's Epic Yarn, Prince Fluff will appear and change the stage with his star yarn whip thingie.

Row 6:

Palutena's Temple - Skyworld - Pyrosphere - Norfair

Labyrinth of Deceit: Takes place in Pandora's Labyrinth, were the goddess acts as a stage boss that can create dark clones of fighters with the Mirror of Truth.

Planet Phaaze: Inspired by the climactic areas of the Metroid Prime trilogy, where Phaazon tentacles and creatures can attack players.

Row 7:

Big Blue - Find Mii - Pilotwings

Lightning: The shocking location from F-Zero GX, which acts as the successor to Mute City/Port Town.

Open Season: Inspired by Duck Hunt. The lower area is covered by tall grass, allowing fighters to hide from the aiming reticule that occasionally appears.

Gyromite: A retro stage for R.O.B., which includes the hazards seen in the original game.

Row 8:

Gaur Plain - Wii Fit Studio - Wily Castle - Windy Hill - Pac-Land

Green House: A Game & Watch stage that includes bugs and cameos from other dual screen G&W games.

So I have to say, having played a lot of the new smash, I'm so disappointed in Mega Man. Yeah he's authentic to his games... But he isn't fun to play :(

A nice stage list. Most people would say that's too many stages, but I believe there will be more stages than in Brawl.

I really wish they went with more unique levels, instead of just iconic ones.
Green Hill Zone & Windy Valley are cool, but I would think Eggmanland or the Space Colony Ark would be a much better stage idea.

Have a link to the interview? Or am I going to have to open up my Game Informer? Because I'm really lazy ):

I like the list as a whole (Bowser Land and your choices for DK stages especially; hopefully there'd be unique dialogue when using Dark Pit in Labyrinth of Deceit), but even with a new WW stage, I'd much rather have Pirate Ship return compared to Bridge of Eldin - likely alongside Temple. And while I'd probably have chosen Casino Palace over Lightning, the latter's rainy industrial atmosphere would look great in HD, even if all the assets were ripped.

Though a second new Metroid stage isn't necessary at all - Pyrosphere represents all the important aspects of the series; well enough that I don't really think Norfair needs to be there either.

Personally, I really want a Casino Night Zone level, but since we're getting screwed over on a non-basic Sonic stage, I'm shifting my support to the next best, thing, Bowser Land.

I'm really feeling your choices, though! Them, or Sky Sanctuary, would be ideal for a Sonic level. And maybe Stardust Speedway as well, but that might just be me wanting the music.

What are you saying! We need a Metroid stage without lava/ acid!

With the exception of Frigate Orpheon.

Casino Night? Gambling & Pinballs in my Smash Bros.?

It seems like Casino Night would be the second stage they would put in if Green Hill was out of the equation. Practically every Smash Bros. fan-game has Casino Night as a stage.

I'm telling ya, we need a Sonic Smash Bros. spin-off. The possibilities are endless.

Man I'd love a Colony ARK stage.
Same as I'd love a Sonic Adventure 1+2 release on Wii U, Sega please.

Either one would work for me, though I personally went with Lightning since Nimbasa City would already cover the neon entertainment district theme. Also, as far as I'm concerned, Pyrosphere is a big metal room with a lava flow, which doesn't really represent Metroid very well (even with Ridley as the stage boss). We also need to have our traditional rising lava stage, so Norfair was chosen over Frigate Orpheon.

Personally, Fortree City, the route just before Fortree City/the Weather Institute, Pacifidlog Town, Sootopolis City, or either of the mountains would be my picks.

I can't really see the Weather Institute :/

But everywhere else, especially Sootopolis City, would be great locales for stages.

Nah, an Ecruteak stage would rep the best region.

That would be nice for Gen 2 rep, buuuuuuuuut

Just imagine Smash Bros. 50 years from now!

Where the graphics will be so good, the characters will look real!

Exhibit A! Jigglypuff!

It's actually kind of cute.

It's actually kind of cute.

If it's supposed to be a pudding, why does it have fur? That just looks like a discarded doll.

And the game we have right now can do a better job at rendering those.

Those are mind boggling.

It's like they're photo-realistic, but at the same time not. Weird.
