Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

This is just based on what we know of Wii U games in development, but say Smash is the holiday 2014 game. What fills out the release schedule between it and Kart to prevent a drought?

I think of the nebulous "2014" games, Smash looks further along than any of the others and I don't think Nintendo would be stupid enough to let another drought happen if they had no other games to fill in the release schedule.

I'm sure Smash looks furthest along because, apart from maybe Donkey Kong TF, it's the 2014 of which we've seen the most.

Between Kart and Smash, assuming it's the November "out for Black Friday", game, there's Hyrule Warriors (Summer in Japan), X, and Bayonetta 2. I'd not be surprised if one of SMT X FE, Yarn Yoshi didn't make it out. Plus, there's that Art Academy game that's supposed to be coming, along with any potential HD remakes or a retail release for Wii Sports Club HD to pad the line-up. Of course, they could surprise us with a couple of new, unannounced games, too, but we'll see.

I'd only be cool with Ridley in Smash if Sakurai is mounted on back of him with the crown of a king.

Otherwise, shoo Ridley, shoo.

Only stage hazards for you.

I doubt SMT x FE will even make 2014. Yoshi and X could come out sooner than we expect, but I think late 2014 would be a reasonable guess for both of them. I could see Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors beating Smash and being the summer lineup. Also I guess I should clarify I'm talking about Smash Wii U. The 3DS version could be farther behind judging by how little we've seen of it so far.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Tetra, but I expect Toon Sheik. The fact that the Phantom got a Twilight Princess redesign to fit vanilla Zelda's moveset indicates to me that Sakurai will do the same with Sheik.

You're probably right, but it's depressing. As mentioned, Toon Shiek doesn't exist, at all. Tetra was in Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Wind Waker HD. Also, if they're doing female empowerment, Tetra doesn't hide she's a girl, while Sheik obscures her identity. Tetra takes it a step further and embraces her own personality, refusing to just become a princess in a pretty dress. Also Smash needs a pirate.

Yeah, I'd be depressed if they made up a Toon Sheik rather than using Tetra. Tetra already has a fanbase and even if she was a Sheik clone they could easily make it work. Replace the chain with the grappling hook, etc.

It would be kinda interesting to see Sheik in the WW style but ultimately it seems like a poor way to represent the character.

Am I the only one that thinks the WiiU version will outsell the 3DS one?, even if they launch on the same day.

A lot more people own a 3DS than a Wii U, and releasing them both on the same day would probably lead to most picking up the 3DS version over the Wii U version because of that.

Gag anime series exist.

How else would you do it? A serious Smash anime sounds awful.

I don't count Phantom Hourglass because they shit all over her character in that game. I suspect though that Sakurai fundamentally views Sheik as part of Zelda's moveset and that will be why we get Toon Sheik instead of Tetra.

I don't see any way that Sakurai will make up a Toon Sheik. It was probably the code name or whatever for Tetra in Brawl.

I just don't understand why the only character with a code name would conveniently be Tetra. "Toon Sheik" is pretty specific.

What if Tetra's her own character who uses piratey equipment from Wind Waker? And then Toon Shiek can just be a shiek clone with weirder hitboxes and such

So would Toon Zelda have 3 transformations a la Pokemon Trainer, or are you seriously suggesting having 3 versions of Zelda on the roster while only having 2 Links?

He already "made up" a Twilight Princess Sheik, Sakurai does as he pleases.

My hope for Tetra is that he only went with Toon Sheik to begin with to save on time.

Nope, I agree with you. I'm not sure why people think that the 3DS one will sell better. I think they will both sell fantastic, but if anything the differences in the versions will get most to buy both versions.

I know I will be.

No body would watch a Smash anime unless they were all chibis or something.

Smash 4 to release simultaneously on Wii U/3DS during June/July 2014.

I thought they said it wouldn't be a simultaneous release?

And I'm still pegging a September release for Wii U. October early November for 3DS.

Well it could be to refer to it as Toon Zelda's transformation.

I don't think Sakurai would use Sheik instead of Tetra for a hypothetical Toon Zelda. It just wouldn't make sense at all.

Rumors are that Sheik was going to appear in Twilight Princess and his somewhat vague quote on the Sheik page says that they based the design on a model during the game's (Twilight Princess') development.

Yeah but those plans were discarded, which makes that version of Sheik original to Brawl. We don't know that there wasn't a Toon Sheik in the works at some point either.

I think Sakurai would want to keep some level of parity between two versions of the same character. Changing a move here and there is one thing, but completely replacing what amounts to half a character's moveset is probably a little too extreme in his eyes.

Again it's the Phantom which convinces me that this is true. If he wanted to make Toon Zelda a unique character he had the opportunity to do so, but if he's mirroring moves again then I don't see how that doesn't extend to Sheik.

For the record I do hope I'm wrong on this. I love Tetra.

Tetra probably would keep most of Shiek's moves if she was playable, though.

Hyrule Historia has the TP Sheik design and the Brawl model is pretty close to it. It is pretty sage to say it was based off of the cut TP content (TP development hell meant lots of ideas were scrapped).

You're not contradicting me at all.

I imagine Tetra would use her dagger/sword for smash attacks and normal attacks. Maybe even throw one for a special.

Could have a cannon with a bomb for another special and maybe even have a canon shoot her up for an up special lol.

SSB4 in November

I agree with the placement of Bayo 2 in August, but not with the other two. Mario Kart was Nintendo's premier Spring release until Donkey Kong's delay to late February. I think this may mean that Nintendo planned for Mario Kart sooner, but it got pushed later. March is typically a big month for releases, so it may be that they planned for it to be released in that month yet it won't make it, so I think it will be in April akin to Mario Kart Wii.

Smash is definitely not Nintendo's big November release provided that Zelda remains on track for this year. Nintendo won't release two big games like Smash and Zelda U next to each other either, and so I think Smash will come out before November as long as Zelda U stays in 2014. There's also the matter of Hyrule Warriors that needs to be released either in late spring or the summer in order to avoid being overshadowed by Zelda U. In other words, Smash is stuck in between Mario Kart and Zelda, and they won't put it in the summer months where smaller titles are being given spotlight (Bayo2, Hyrule Warriors) so that makes me think May at best and September/October at worst.

I could see Mario Kart being released sooner, but you're deluding yourself if you believe that Zelda U isn't going to be a Fall 2015 release at earliest.

Zelda U definitely isn't coming in 2014. The game hasn't even been officially announced yet.
It was going to be presented both at E3 2013 & NYCC. We know for certain it was ready for NYCC, but it was held back to let ALBW have the spotlight.

You also have to consider that 3D World, ALBW, & Pokémon X/Y (all fantastic games, by the way) were released months after being officially announced.
