Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

He's gonna reveal n64 alt costumes. Fat pikachu returns.
pikachu is probably one of those few character redesigns where I can barely tell what they even changed beyond making him slightly slimmer and taller and hence can't see why people want him desperately changed back to his apparently superior 'slightly shorter/fatter' design

oh no my childhood

The only fat pikachu I approve of is the one art from the first Pokemon card set back in the day.

Sentimental Value. I think it would be pretty crazy to see all the new characters with 64esk models.

Pikachu gonna be sentimental shitty model or not, and pokemans probably gonna want their guys as pretty as can be.

Also again " shitty models" eh... just give me an actual alternate costume please. Shitty model alternate has never been my thing.

Like.. mario shunshine mario
or soccer peach
or racing rosalin
or Different captain falcon outfits
Or different samus suits
or pokemon with different accessories you can find in game, or weird grooming related stuff.

I dunno anything other than hey , shitty re purposed model.

He is supposed to be pretty fast i guess, i guess they wanted the design to reflect that.

Woah, I totally forgot about the clang sound. That was satisfying.

Oh man, yeees. That true metallic sound to that was great. Made it feel much more effective.

There was something just... "Correct" about hearing that sound when a Falcon Punch and Wizard Punch connected.

What you call shitty can be seen as an exploration of nostalgia to others. What if costumes. I'd like to see how Rosalina would look if she existed in the N64 era. A downsampled DDD would be pretty cool. Ugly Falco to match Ugly Fox sounds like fun extra content to me. It won't please everyone, but nothing will, and that won't stop them from having other alts like Biker Peach.

But he's so disgustingly adorable!

Just bring back the down special voice from 64 and it's all cool.

I just seriously can't make out the difference between the two designs beyond that one difference. It's the series I follow the least out of Smash, but even characters like Mario Nintendo hesitates to mix up seem to go through more significant changes over the years than Pikachu.

It's one of the few times where I can't even see how you could have a definite preference for something which to me looks nearly identical to me.

qq just has bad Pokemon taste in general

I'm joking qq, calm down lol

everyone sees everything different

just accept it

you can't tell me what to do, mooom

I mean, Mewtwo's X/Y designs before people realized it was just a power-up thing and not an actual redesign is something which I could easily understand there being a split opinion. Pika just seems extremely mild to me in comparison to almost every other character design that's gone through changes over the years.

It's just the most unenthusiastic "piga" ever and I love it ever so much.

I hope we get nothing but a picture of Dedede's jump coming up in a few hours.
look at it this way; we'll finally have confirmation he has the ability to jump

It's easier to tell if you look at the sprites, or older artwork. He used to be a chubby, charismatic little thing. Gen 3 slimmed and stretched him out a bit, gave the limbs more definition, and made the ears less spiky, all to reflect how the anime changed the design over time to be more emotive. The result's more mouselike than the original pillow shape.

64 had such satisfying hit sounds. The click when you shield is great too.

The sound effects are going down in satisfaction as the series goes on :(

Oh, I was thinking of the Melee one.
I completely forgot about stonerchu from N64.

Dude... Piga. Just Piga.

XD

In terms of sprites I remember nearly everybody looking really 'off' in Red/Blue (not to mention Green) in comparison to how they looked in the concept art and by Yellow he looks exactly the same to how I'm seeing him in most examples of his 'thin' design.

The regular art's easier to tell the difference with, but even then by the western release of the first game the concept art looks like the 'current' design with a slightly less defined neck. Only blatantly odd one out I can see is a piece of art that's apparently from the trading cards.

I hope Zero Suit Samus flashes through Samus's armor whenever she gets hit by electricity.

I used to pause the game in 64 for that.

If Chrom isn't in, I would be surprised.

As was mentioned, Fire Emblem: Awakening was the game that saved the franchise.

I would eat a chocolate hat if there wasn't at least one rep from it, and Chrom would be the obvious choice....or Tharja if Sakurai is cool enough. :)

I would also love to see "Marth" be a costume change for Marth, because Awakening's "Marth" was awesome.

Apparently everyone despised Marth's new clothes design.

Nah, Sakurai is adding only women this time to appeal to the housewives who made Wii a success because Iwata is forcing him to, so we're getting no epic characters and only women and joke characters. Dixie, Lucina, Rosalina, WFT, Paluenta, and that's it.

Yellow's close, as an anime derivative.

It isn't as dramatic as the Classic->Modern Sonic changes in any case, no.

If we get any character reveal before mid-February, the awesome Translator 'leak' will be disproven. I am now torn. Do I want moar characters revealed soon? Do I hope for nothing, and just hope for that rumor to be true?

Or do I wait for a different false rumor that includes a Wonderful One?

sakurai ain't waiting for that 3ds game we are getting yoshi TONIGHT
One thing I always wonder with these matches; why do some players just sort of run or wave-dash in place for a couple seconds while their opponent is away from them? Is it just to keep their hands from resting or is there some sort of actual meta mindgame going on there?

I for one am ready for more pictures of people standing around in a goofy manner.

It's to throw the opponent off.

It's actual metagame. It's called dash dancing and they do that so that they can keep the opponent from reading them and keep momentum on their side. If you don't wavedash, you're not gonna be fast enough to get your hits to connect. Mind games man, Smash is so technical when it comes to combos and techniques.
It's also to keep their hands and fingers warm and ready.

So for whatever reason I was thinking of Pokemon newcomers and who we might see. A lot of people are thinking Mewtwo is a given, but he is kind of a veteran? I feel like X/Y doesn't have any real standouts minus the starters, and I'm not sure if they'd add another Pokemon Trainer. So then I decided to look through the list of Mega Pokemon and I feel like Blaziken or Gardevoir could show up to represent both Ruby/Sapphire and X/Y. Beyond people suggesting new Final Smashes involving the Mega Evolutions I feel like there hasn't been a lot of talk about Pokemon newcomers though.

You really have no idea how much SmashGAF talks about pokemon newcomers.
