Superman returns screen (next gen?)

Blimblim

The Inside Track
Electronic Arts just sent us this screen of Superman Returns, marked as PS2/Xb but considering the format and quality it looks much more like 360/PS3.
Anyway, here it is

This could well be a shot for the X360 version of the game, the screens I saw in various mags don't come close to the graphical prowess shown here. Let alone the format.

Ha! Did they send it with the 'you've been given exclusive access' crap on it too?

God I love those guys. Pure comedy all the way.

And I agree, it does look a tad poo.

Yup, there were like, "WOOOOOOOOooooooooooooo you've got exclusive access to this screen, love us love us!". funny :)

Is that a gameplay shot? I have this image of Superman flying off to catch the rocket before it hits whatever, in a sort of 2D shmup level.

Would be pretty cool, as I was expecting the bog standard 3rd person behind the character type game.

Isn't that a render from the trailer though? Superman Returns fansite, BlueTights.net, will have the trailer for the game on February 28th and also posted this:

I call 'target render'.

I love the scale though, thats the kind of fight i want to have in a superman game.

I guess I'm in the minority in actually liking the screen.

I want to see Superman beat the crap out of a giant robot skeleton, that's very appealing to me.

Whats better than a giant robot skeleton?

A robot monkey skelton, of course. But that's too much to hope for.

Looks like a Brainiac plot going on for those thinking that fighting a giant rocot is stupid. Its a valid part of the genre.

is that seriously the best they could think up?
It's Metallo, an original villain from comics, isn't it? Can't really blame them for following the source material...unless he was never a giant robot skeleton in the comics.

Also, GI preview of this from a few months ago mentioned this would have a free-roaming world, so I think the nitpicks of the graphics need to be tempered by that a bit.

That would suck to play, you just fly around like a bullet punch a hole in its stomach etc. Burn it with your laser eyes.

and if youd ont fly like a bullet, you eitehr fly around it really slow, or teh camera zooms out and you control a minuscule superman around teh screen...doing stuff.

SOTC it aint. Superman = crap game material!!

When villains run rampant, only one man can rescue a world in peril. Will you be able to master your super powers to save Metropolis?

Inspired by the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures feature film and more than 60 years of DC Comics’ lore, Superman Returns™: The Videogame will create the ultimate open-world super hero experience.

As the Man of Steel™, you’ll hone your unworldly super powers such as Flight, X-Ray Vision, Heat Vision, Super Hearing, Super Strength, Super Speed, and Super Breath to fight villains that only Superman™ can defeat. Explore your super powers to discover new uses and combinations: use Heat Vision to melt a rogue car or as a focused laser-like beam to cut through thick metal; use Super Breath to move heavy objects or freeze villains into solid ice. You can also combine powers and interact with your environment; for instance, freeze water spouting from a broken fire hydrant into a giant icicle with your Super Breath and use your Super Strength to hurl it at an enemy.

Get ready to take flight, as Superman Returns’ revolutionary new mechanics allow you to take full command of your aerial maneuvers. You’re not limited to flying over 800 mph (faster than a speeding bullet™) — you can also corral your enemies, perform stunning in-air acrobatics, instigate Super Speed missile-like attacks, and much more.

In Superman Returns: The Videogame, you explore and protect the truly living city of Metropolis — one that is not only expansive (with 80 sq miles and over 9,000 buildings), but also changes dynamically with you as you affect gameplay. Citizens will run away in terror from newly-erupting danger and also exit their cars to cheer and snap photos as you fly overhead to save them.

Superman may be invincible, but Metropolis is not. Player choice matters, as MetropolisÂ’ destruction will affect your ability to progress. You must face the internal conflict facing Superman at every turn: will you pause your pursuit of super villains to stop a massive tornado sweeping through the city and save its civilians? Every decision made is critical to MetropolisÂ’ existence and can affect the collateral damage meter, which ultimately keeps the player in the game.

This is not just another movie-based game. This is the Superman game youÂ’ve always wanted to play. Utilizing more than 60 years of rich history, Superman Returns: The Videogame is the ultimate Superman experience for players.

I like the idea of a "sandbox" Superman game similiar to Spider-Man 2 so I'm at least curious how it turns out.

Holy shit! Way to totally judge it all based off of a couple of screenshots.

[edit] Oh, and use a spell checker too - sheesh.

Maybe the robot has Kryptonite in it. He is green in spots at least.

Back seating modding indeed. :lol

Uh, modding it is not. Commenting on shitty grammar and spelling it is.

eitehr, teh, youd and ont aren't fucking words. You would think someone would at least read their post before they actually hit the Submit Reply button

Oh, and I'm not so sure your the best person to be commenting on someones tag there Victim.

I sincerely hope that is not a villain in the new movie, not that I'm at all excited about the movie to begin with, but it would be embarassing.

Just for the few that didnt know, that enemy is not in the actual movie.

i dont see how those shots arent impressive if real time. especially the second. look at the building damage! :O

i hate superman (its true) but even i'm interested in a game where you battle an enemy at that scale in a giant free roaming city. wowsers

He does. The GI article went in-depth on the whole X05 playable demo that showcased the battle with Metallo but he's not in the movie. Apparently whichever villain in the game gauges well with gamers and fans will most likely end up in the film's sequel.

Metallo is normally human-sized, but there was one issue where he got that big after he gained the ability to meld with anything metallic and merged with a battleship. His gimmick is "the man with the kryptonite heart"; his brain was placed in an android body powered by kryptonite, so he just had to expose his chest cavity while fighting Supes to gain the upper hand (that and he had robotic superstrength).

Are people serious in hating? I'm no fan of Superman, by any means, but you COULD NOT do that shot on current gen. Go ahead, try it and you'll find out, YOU CAN'T!

Regardless of his octagon heart, the render quality of that shot can not be achieved on any PS2, anywhere and maybe you could do it on Xbox, but it would crawl.

People need to pull their heads out of their asses, because this next gen bashing is just getting silly.

Typical EA stuff.

Too ugly to be considered next gen and yet it somehow seems unimpressive for current gen as well. Plain ugly either way.

The second pic comes from the game?

The images at the top of the thread or my post above?

If it's the latter then those are direct feed shots from Game Informer's exclusive with the disclaimer that every shot in the article was from the "360" version. C&VG posted the direct feed versions a couple of months ago with some artwork from the game but they were quickly taken down... :lol
