who charges and listens at the same time anyway

Might the new phone have two lighting ports one for charging one for headphones?

The Lightning port takes up more room internally than the aux one does, so if it did you'd know Apple were doing this for no other reason than to tax headphone manufacturers and make it's accessory ecosystem worse.

You guys know you don't have to like buy the phone right? If it doesn't have a 3.5mm Jack you don't have to get the phone regardless.

If they're really going to drop the headphone jack in favor of Bluetooth or whatever else they come up with, I think it would be a better idea to introduce it with the iPhone 7/7+ and include the new earbuds in the box but still keep the jack until at least the 8/8+.

...I'm still going to have to charge another thing every day. I have a wireless headset right now, it's for long duration conference calls only, it gets charged as needed. I don't want to have to constantly maintain battery charge on a pair of wireless headphones just to listen to music when I take a walk.
This is what bothers me the most as well. Fuck charging yet another thing. Also, any adapter is going to add bulk to the phone as it's in your pocket and the 6s Plus is already pretty damn big.

I have a good set of wired headphones that I have no intention of replacing until they break. I tend to swap phones every 2-3 years so I'm good for a while I guess, but I'm not on board with this idea at all.

This really is the optical disc thread all over again.

The examples people keep using were REPLACED by something. People moved off optical discs for digital. Apple isn't replacing, they're removing. You can't do jack shit while charging a macbook because it has no ports and now you can't listen to headphones on an iphone. If you remove it then bloody make a replacement.

Haha no. This is a stupid change and not for the better. Having less ports means you can do less and oh yeah, all those nice head phones you have now need an adapter or they're useless. I use headphones every day and change while I use them too. This can fuck right off.

And its not even a standard its proprietary, not agreed between different companies like USB, its a locked in system.

I wouldn't buy a smart phone that doesn't have a normal headphone jack.

edit: Yet more shitty design from apple. I don't know what is going on over there.

This is why there are no Apple products in my house. Fuck them. I'm not throwing away perfectly good peripherals just to suit their ego.

they'll have people like you covered (which will be the minority):

Hmph - what are some decent wireless earbud options that won't commit a crime of a sexual nature to my wallet?

This is complete bullshit, btw. A headphone jack is different than a CD drive or flash...

Sony SBH80s. They can even withstand showers ...!

Of course they will make a replacement. There will be a pair of earbuds in the box that work, and you can continue to use any Bluetooth headphone. It's the same scenario.

It really isn't

It really is.

If they put Bluetooth earbuds in the box then ok.

Oh they will, don't you worry, but they will be sold separately.

They will make a replacement, an adapter with two lightning ports for charging and to plug in your headphones...

hahaha that op

i have to wonder if people like that dislike old things just because they're old or if they're looking for reasons to hate something specifically because apple's ditching it

Apple always cuts corners when it comes to audio - crappy MacBook speakers, POS earbuds, etc.
I doubt their packaged earbuds will be a move forward.

They should just remove the speakers as well, nobody uses their iPhone as a phone these days anyway. And if they really want to they can use Bluetooth.

Neither of those are replacements, you get (terrible)headphones in the box and can use bluetooth already. There's no advancement there, there's no simplicity or better functionality. Tell me how this improves the phone in ANY way. It's not like HDMI where it has better quality and less cables or digital content. They're literally cutting shit out of the phone and people call it the future. What next? Removing wifi capabilities? "Wifi is so old! Mobile data is so much better.".

Wifi and mobile data actually advance though. Where's the audio department's advancement?

Can lightning cables daisy chain? If the ear buds are wired but have a female port opposite the male connector then I can charge and listen to music ( something I do every single day at work so it would be a real bummer if this went away or required me getting wireless ear buds).

From a design standpoint this would be ugly. Apple won't want weird, forked wires coming out of their devices.

what functionality do you want from an audio jack that's not provided by the 3.5mm standard?

Beaming sound directly into my brain.

that's why the headphones will use the lightning connector....but let me guess now the complaint is you'll want to use your headphones AND charge at the same time lol.

I am curious as to whether or not they ship headphones with a detachable cable that can be used wirelessly with the iphone. Would be hard to do that in the current earpod design though.

Not sure why using headphones and charging at the same time is such a laughing matter. Ever take a conference call at work with somewhat low battery? Or maybe you had >60% battery but the call will be 2-3 hours long?

At the end of the day, they're complicating multiple use cases for me. I'll wait for the actual reveal/announcement to pass full judgement, but I don't like the way this is heading.

That's too bad. I was going to get an iPhone next after having hardware problems with two Samsungs in a row, but I tend to lose headphones fairly regularly and am not interested in paying whatever ungodly markup Apple will charge. And shitty Bluetooth is out of the question.

Wireless charging tech is what really needs to get solid.

My current headphones are already a straight plug (sadly, my only real gripe with them). If I have to use an adapter like that I'll be looking at a solid 2" or so sticking out of the bottom of the phone. :/

I can get away with that in a top pocket if I'm wearing a jacket, but it'll be a recipe for disaster in trouser pockets.

Why would anyone want the most common type of port to go away? Because "future" isn't the answer.

Bluetooth sound isn't where it needs to be and most headphones don't have removable cables. Adapters are silly and make it a cumbersome experience. What is it that Lightning will do to revolutionize the world as a headphone adapter?

I dunno, if you're actually committed to this shit get rid of the lightning port too. If you buy into this 'moving forward' stuff then go all the way.

What sort of advancement do you expect exactly? Better quality? That's more to do with the DAC/music files/headphones than the jack. Better wireless headphones? You're going to have the problem of charging for the foreseeable future so wired will have to be around regardless.

The reason I want it to go away is the wire. It's annoying, cumbersome, and ugly. I already use Bluetooth when working out due to the wire getting caught on anything and everything. I don't use it in a meeting because I need 100% reliability. I agree wireless audio tech isn't where it should be for this kind of feature removal, but if this spurs it, great.

As a person who owns several pairs of wired headphones, earbuds, and IEMs, this move will probably keep me from getting an iPhone 7. Until BT improves (and doesn't drain battery like it does now, disconnect or have transmission issues in busy public spaces) I'm not interested.

GAF overreacting to Apple doing something different by removing a port that will be unnecessary in the future. This is something I've seen before.

We don't even know exactly how the removal of the port will work yet. Just wait until the phone is revealed.

I say good. Get that shit outta here. Onward to a wireless future.

If the headphones now plug through the Lightning port, there will still have a wire.
Literally the same thing.

"Unnecessary in the future".
Do you know home many different pieces of tech use that port? Just because a company tells you it's obsolete doesn't mean it is.
Also, you're posting in a message board where people talk about pretty much anything tech-related. This was bound to be a discussion piece, especially with Headphone-GAF around.

define "future" then

Sorry OP, but I don't like this at all... I don't feel this is an evolution that is needed.

If they want to add a 2nd wireless option with superior quality, go right ahead... but allow me to use regular headphones if I like.
