Surface |OT|

Finally been able to play with mine.... right now I just have the tablet (no covers.... am planning on getting one but want to wait for a sale on them or hoping an xbox green cover is in the works) so my experiences are just of the tablet.

Overall its very good. It does a much better job with multitasking than my work ipad. I am somewhat disappointed that some of the games are not compatible with surface (but are for the regular win8.... esp toy soldiers was really looking forward to playing that on a surface) but even the simple games like solitare and minesweeper are only x86. With most people getting the surface it seems this is a pretty bad mistake not to port that stuff to arm as well.

Hardware wise I think surface feels better than an ipad.... I actually prefer the widescreen display to the ipads 4x3 but the ipad's more pixels is noticeable. To me the ultimate tablet will be when the second generation surface comes out with hopefully the 1080p display and pen input running the next gen arm processors.

That's true, but I want to see the comparison video. :p

e: I guess I should ask for a streaming comparison. I'm not really familiar with Airplay as you guys can probably tell.

In my experience PlayTo is a bit better, if only because it's easier to use and doesn't seem to bug out as much as AirPlay does. Again, only my experience. I've had the following problems with AirPlay:

- The 'AirPlay' icon sometimes doesn't even appear. I have to restart the Apple TV to fix this.
- It doesn't seem to work in Jasmine (YouTube app). It connects and the Apple TV receives something, but tells me it couldn't play the content. The amateurish YouTube app I've got on Windows 8 works fine.
- There are multiple controls! It's bizarre. There's an AirPlay button in the 'system tray' that only seems to enable AirPlay in Safari. Everything else either has it's own control or uses the built-in control in the media player.

Totally agree. I absolutely love this current version. Microsoft will continue to improve the software side as the hardware is perfect.

After the streaming issues the Systems Engineer in me had to check the event logs. All types of red and Warning shit throughout. Whatever.. time to do like a regular computer and REBOOT :). Failed to properly shut down something pops up really fast while rebooting. All good since. Whatever not worried nor is this concerning.

Also need universal apps. I really don't want to buy gleek again.

Do you guys have frame rate issues with Youtube? I watched a review and it looked pretty bad.
Haven't tried. No problem with worldstarhiphop. As soon as you get the device install the updates from the desktop not in the metro interface(Metro interface won't allow you to force the install now) one of those updates was a flash update.

anybody knows how to tell IE not to go to mobile version of web pages (i.e. advertise itself as a desktop and not a mobile broweser)?

I don't get a single website as mobile. I would prefer to get GAF as mobile only and can't quite figure that out. As for Youtube, no issues for me on videos being run at 720p. It looks beautiful.

Thanks a lot to everyone in this thread, after waffling between getting a surface and not for the better part of the day, I went to the popup store and played with one.

If you want to talk yourself out of a Surface I recommend going to a store if possible and touch one yourself.

...

So the touch cover is nice. That's what I ended up buying. Went with blue for the extra $20. Worth it.

Yeah, I need to stay away from BB Microsoft Stores for the next couple months.

Playing with it at the mall now. Thought the resolution would be a deal breaker but the screen still looks great. I really like the product. Very well built and the keyboard cover works pretty well although I still made plenty of mistakes on it.

Went to MS Store and walked out with a Surface + Type Cover. Time to see how quickly people can put apps out otherwise I see myself returning in 30 days :O

I effed around and stopped at my local Microsoft store with no intentions of purchasing this thing...

2 hours later and after playing with it, I now have a Surface with type cover and I dont know why... I have 14 days to take it back, but I will be using it at work also to see how it plays out. It is awesome though

Maybe this is common knowledge but I sure didn't know it.

My understanding of Flash on W8 was that in Metro mode it would be whitelisted, but in desktop mode all Flash would run. This is not correct. Flash on the desktop on Surface is also whitelisted sites only.

Not only does this mean I can't watch my favorite porn on Surface, I can't use important web apps for school and work.

Typing on it right now, but mine is getting returned =/

Windows RT != Windows 8. In Windows 8 that is true, the desktop version of IE and Flash is all there. Its obviously not in Windows RT.

It is correct, but the Surface is running Windows RT, not Windows 8.

Damn you all and you're expendable income of waltzing into stores and nonchalantly dropping $600 on a Surface, almost indifferently. Damn you. Major gadget envy going on right now from a dude who has a baby coming on Monday, without any chance of having an extra $600 for a while. I'll be sure to gloat next year when Surface 2 shows up with a cool factor that far exceeds your paltry gen 1 device.

If you haven't had your baby showers yet then you can ask your in-laws to get one for you guys. I'm pretty sure it's the single thing holding your kid back from going to Harvard. At least that's what you should tell them.

Congrats btw.

Also, do not let the Microsoft popup store in Glendale charge your credit card. Their point of sale system is not working correctly and they swiped my card three times - claimed it only charged once. Guess what? I got charged three times. Who knows how much work this is going to take to unravel.

Thanks. We were showered with pink frilly stuff galore (little girl on the way), I might have been able sneak a pink type covered Surface in there if it had released a month ago, those ladies would have bought anything that had any hue of pink on the wishlist.

It has been getting around 500 new apps per day I hear

Support won't be a problem.

And like a few others here, I'm going to put the Surface through its paces over the next week or two to see if I want to keep it. After a few hours of use tonight, I know two things:

1) the next revision of this is going to be killer

2) I think 64 is the size to get

Us disposable income people will just buy the next one and sell this one.

Definitely is. A couple of movies after all the preinstalled stuff and the 3.5GB recovery portion and its curtains for the memory. Too bad I was forced to get the black touch cover.

I've played movies off the SD card I bought thanks to that Amazon daily deal. The only downside is it doesn't auto-populate your video library with all of the videos on the SD card. But after you play it once, it shows up. The library thing is only a bummer for me with music, but I keep all of my music on my phone and even then, I use TuneIn Radio most of the time when I want to listen to music and I've got that app.

Sell it to commodore probably. Some alcohol based cleaner will get the fingerprints and, erm, protein based buildup off that screen.

Gah. Gaaaaah. The reality of likely having to buy one used, and then the implications of that reality. Gaaaaaaah.

In Win8? or WinRT? The whole Windows Store is kind of confusing since different apps are gonna show up on WinRT/Win8/WinPhone8
The applications in the Windows Store are can be compiled for both Windows 8 and Windows RT. About 90% of the applications in the Windows Store work for both. (that is why people say don't worry about support because this has the backing of real windows, aka guaranteed at least 200+ million sales). And if an app is only x86 (windows 8), it won't show up in the ARM (windows rt) store.

So this Xbox Glass thing is interesting. I'm posting this from IE on my Xbox and typing everything from the Surface. It's a bit buggy. Typing in my password was really wonky. I'm not sure this is what was intended as far as usage.

You can type with the touch cover but the touchpad seems to be disabled for IE on the Xbox.

I've already tried to install Windows 8 programs that can't be run on RT. A bit annoying, haha.

Is there anyway to play mkv video files without having to re-encode them?

Not that I'm aware of. You'll have to wait.

One thing that makes me extremely excited is the amount of tweakability. With the registry freely available and the ability to kill services this could be even faster than it already is soon.
