Episode 4 may be the episode that made me drop this.

Reviving Pina was just a little silly and a waste of what could of been a great episode. And the fact that he is a solo player I would much prefer he was always in a group. It would lead to a much more interesting story.

I feel as though it isn't going to change and he will always be
helping other players out and saving them etc.

Nah, the side stories stop after episode 6. Keep watching. They're all great though IMO. Sachi ;_;

Ending was okay. I didn't realize Asuna was the blue-haired girl at first and was like WTF

Took me a second or two to put that one together as well.

With the story being focused on gaming for their lives and then saving Asuna from evil rapist guy, it might be hard for happily gaming for pleasure to hold an audience. I wonder what shenanigans they have in store.

Ending Theme:
"Overfly" by Luna Haruna (eps 15-24)
Sorry. I just got carried away. I didn't notice there were episodes listing.

Well. . .

I believe there will be Season 2...

I better not jinx myself. *knocks*

I remember when I got excited for High School of the Dead Season 2 but I never heard anything from it since last year.

The director has left Madhouse. He's been working on other stuff at Production IG like Guilty Crown and now Attack on Titan. Don't expect another season of that ever. Lol.

It's like the second biggest show of the year, I wouldn't be worried.
If SAO were second biggest show of the year... Can I know what is first biggest show of the year?

Well That's a definitely bummer! I am still excited to watch Attack on Titan anime. :D

I think even bigger problem is that the manga's schedule makes even Berserk seem regular.

Oh, then there might be hope after all. If there's enough manga in the future, he can always go back and direct another season when he's done with the current stuff he's making!

The Manga has also been on hiatus for over a year, so nobody should be holding their breath for a second season.

Welp, just finished watching the series in one go.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU MY HEART IS BURSTING! WHY DOES ANIME DO THIS TO ME?

I haven't seen such a good one in a long time. I like happy endings.

Was the anime supposed to be an adaptation of the manga? I don't think it was considering the anime went further than the manga ever got. The anime was based off the light novels.

Wait, what? There is no Highschool of the Dead novel.

You would be surprised at how different the reaction to SAO is on many other fora; I don't mean that as a slight against gaffers or to imply there's any kind of hiveminding. I've just noticed a much more positive vibe elsewhere.

My wife really liked it. I guess its a YMMV thing since she didn't have any problems with the sister arc at all.

Don't worry many of the people who critic Sao can't help it ..
it's not the greatest anime of the century , but it's entertaining and that's what it was made to be.

i personnaly think it's funny that many people critizing all the details they could have for many watched until the end..after all hate ( and hatewatch) can't exist without love nearby.

It's because AnimeGAF did watch more than just SAO so they had things to compare it to. Sunday mornings for me consisted of Space Brothers and Sword Art Online so it easy to see why SAO would look (not literally as Space Brothers is QUALITY central) terrible in comparison.

well one need to be able to take things into perspective ... i'm not applying the same level of brain usage when i'm watching precure , than when i'm watching sao or when i'm watching Jojo or GITS .. one need to be able to set back and not put every anime on the same level when they clearly aren't.

Far from me from comparing Shin sekai yori and Sword arts online ....

i mean why not compare Sao to " hack :\ roots " ? or the greed island part of hunter x hunter ?
Or Accel world? or star ocean Ex ? i dunno something close to the same genre or a heavy fantasy anime that isn't comic based ?

I only watch things I enjoy. I guess I'm not enough of a hipster to watch things only for the purpose of shitting on them on the Internet.

Visited /a/ for the first time in about 2 years the other day to see reactions on SAO's ending and man did they pan the entire series. I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was; an anime that was light hearted, had a love interest that actually went somewhere (usually these types like to leave that stuff out), and a dark twist that made the characters' actions matter.

Though I was a little uneasy with the whole sister / cousin thing but I guess it's just a difference in culture and didn't make me think less of the series. What did get me, however, was the dance sequence in the sky. I mean, it's almost like he's playing with her emotions at that time. But whatever.

I've sat through its entirety and my wife is catching up by finishing up the first arc. One of the best anime I've seen in a long time.

What about the virtual rape foolishness? and the tacky rescue arc plotline?

Like I said before, I enjoyed the first 10 or so episodes, but things turned rotten quickly when melodrama became the focus. I should have known something was up when the AI developed sentience because the guy who said he preferred SAO to the real world and would rather let a group of people die than reveal his true level was so well adjusted that she wanted to meet him.

Again, I'm just bitter I never got an arc about the survivors of SAO trying to readjust to the real world after their experiences.

It's no classic, but it was a fun romp that was a dramatic improvement over most of its contemporaries just due to the premise alone. That being said, what was a really interesting romantic arc turning into a fucking incest harem sure soured me on the back half.

Isn't that delved into a bit in the 3rd arc of the light novels? We also see a bit of it in the final episode. It would seem that after living in a virtual world for 2 years they would want to go back despite all the rotten memories of people dying and such (hey, people die in the real world too).

I can't believe how dumb the mangaka for High School of the Dead must be for letting that series go on hiatus. Isn't he working on another manga? I'm not sure on specific numbers but at conventions and stuff here in America HSotD was super popular and seemed like it had a lot of potential after the first season.

The virtual rape part really only explicitly occurred in the second to last episode so I don't think it bothered her (or a lot of people) as much as you might imagine.

I dropped this series around episode 8 but seeing some positive (and negative) reactions in this thread made me pick it back up. What have I done?

They're successful enough in other areas that they're not really pressed for money. The artist, for example, has other manga/porn on the side.

You can't pander to fans using grounded and non-artificial human drama.
Aside from the fact that you totally can, I can't imagine "accustomed to a life of beastslaying and murder, the former warriors of Aincrad are unable to find satisfaction in modern day living" coming across as particularly grounded or organic. Hilarious, definitely. But not realistic.

Or things like "living 2 years under the constant threat of PKing has made the survivors of untrusting and given them a mild case of insomnia". Or "not responding to your real name because you've grown accustomed to your SAO name". Or "only associating with other SAO survivors becasue nobody else can understand what you went through. Or "SAO survivors waking up to find that they've lost their job, their homes and their families". All of which are far more grounded and organic than what we got.

Sure they could eke out some cheap feels from sappy sods like me, but the reasonability of those struggles would ultimately be sabotaged by the silliness of the underlying concept. Not that I'm doubting the prowess of the immaculate Kawahara, mind you. His glorious vision is beyond the ken of mere mortals.

Well you'll see some people who couldn't let go on the virtual world to the point they became a danger to other ( that's for another arc ).

And the school all those teenagers are living in was specially made to supervise their return to real life .MOst of the adult players haven't lost their jobs ( agil keep his real job thank to her wife and klein keep his because this boss was a good guy ) and those who have lost their jobs got some nice money to survive and to rebound by themselves ... and that's mostly what happenned. out of all the survivors , most went back to real life without much troubles and you'll see that some of them sure didn't go back to the real world without some issues.

BUt all of this is for season 2... ( and 3 )
