Taika Waititi to Direct New ‘Star Wars’ Film

Taika Waititi will direct a new "Star Wars" movie for theatrical release, which he's co-writing with "1917" scribe Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

Taika Waititi will direct a new “Star Wars” movie for theatrical release, which he’s co-writing with “1917” scribe Krysty Wilson-Cairns, Disney and Lucasfilm announced on Monday.

The studio also confirmed that a new untitled “Star Wars” TV series is in the works at Disney Plus from “Russian Doll” creator Leslye Headland, which Variety reported exclusively last month.

The film news affirms reports that first broke in January that Waititi was developing a “Star Wars” movie, on the heels of his well-received work directing the season finale of the hit Disney Plus “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian.”

This is a rare move that actually gets me truly excited for Star Wars again.

cool he did a good Thor movie. guy is funny, if a little trolly at times. he has a sense for good visuals imo that my favorite thing about him. at the very least he is far more interesting than JJ/RJ.

however it does more solidify the fact that all the movies and projects are basically turning into the same thing. how many Marvel people are in SW at this point? countdown till Tessa Thompson shows up...

I wouldn’t have minded a recasting though, unless they have an FX plan to “buff” her up as Thor that isn’t too distracting.

things I read about House of Cards and Mindhunter I gather that the directorial
style for these types of shows are typically dictated by the showrunner/producer.
Most of the cinematic universes are supposedly run the same way - this should
be especially true for Star Wars after Kathleen Kennedy allowed Rian Johnson
to tank the entire franchise.
So the question is why Taiki would want in on that kind of a deal. The story is probably
supervised by the 'Story Group' and he is constrained in his directorial decisions
by whomever is running the show at LucasFilms - I hope to god it's not Kennedy.
And the only reason why LucasFilms would want Taika to helm one of their movies
is because his name could be a box office draw. They could just as well hire a
nobody who could follow all the mandates from his higher-ups.

I'm going to be perfectly honest with you. I have no deep insights into the goings on behind those franchises and
generally no Idea of what I am talking about. Generally speaking I would much rather see movie makers that I
enjoy make their own movies outside of those giant franchises. That being sad I'm sure Taika is quite happy with
his lot in life and the jobs he's working on. I wouldn't mind making a star wars movie for 1/10th of his paycheck,

Could be good. JoJo Rabbit was incredible so hopefully he delivers a Star Wars movie that is more character focused and less "insert giant action scene here, and forget the plot development" movie

Unpopular opinion but I thought Ragnarok was one of the weakest marvel films and the weakest of the mainline characters' solo films.

It was a discombobulated mess with no cohesion between the actors, Goldbloom was terrible and the film dragged on way too long with too little action.

Still though, Ragnarok beats the last 5 star wars films hands down, so...

I re-watched The Last Jedi last night..... check out the idiotic deleted scenes to know they were making it up as they went.
