She's just seriously unlikable right now to me, like Final Fantasy XIII Lightning unlikable and that drags the game down for me. The rest of the cast are great and a good reason to keep playing I guess just like Sazh was in FF XIII. Magilou is awesome, Rokoru is awesome, Laphicet is adorable.
Same world. Berseria takes place around 1000 years before Zesteria (This becomes even more obvious as you play through the game). In specific, Berseria seems to take place in the "era of Asgard" they mentioned in Zesteria given the royal family's name
Yeah I feel ya, but this game just hyped me up too the point to play Tales of Zestiria again. Instead of just mashing buttons I'm going to try and learn the combos, and weapon system. Though I probably won't start ToZ until I complete all of ToB sidequest...and beat GR2.
...crap forgot I'm picking up Digimon tomorrow. Lol probably start it after beating the sidequest of ToB or I will never come back to it.

I'd say the difference between Lightning and Velvet is largely because we actually get to see what Velvet is like before shit goes down and because we get to see multiple facets of her personality throughout the game (haven't finished but based on what I've seen so far). I feel they clarified pretty well why Velvet is the way she is. I'm a decent way into the game now and just saw a scene that strongly reminded me of Velvet before things went bad. It's pretty evident to me at least having played around 40 hours that she's changing over time from interacting with the rest of the party, especially Number Two.
Also as for your spoiler,
Zaveid talks about meeting Eizen in Tales of Zestiria. Here we get to see how Zaveid and Eizen were involved all those years ago.

Think of her as Luke from Tales of Abyss, towards the end of the game she lighten up and will probably become more tolerable for you. You will see more skits of her smiling, laughing, and giving housewives tips. Honestly I didn't mind her attitude throughout the game, I actually felt it refreshing that we didn't have a goodie two shoe like most tales games.
I too thought of starting a new Zestiria play but considering I did the bonus dungeon like a week before Berseria and the combat felt terrible then I can't even imagine going back now after Berseria's combat.
Anyway, I'm right before the final dungeon now. 72 hours. Gonna see if there are any sidequests I can do first.
I like Velvet because she's not a one note RAGE REVENGE character, even though thats actually what she wants to be. The only comfort she find is in her hatred of Artorius, but she keeps finding aspects of her humanity coming back and influencing her mood and decisions. You have a good context of how she was before all of this, and because she lost everything she loved over the course of 7 years, she takes comfort in wallowing in the rage and she tries to push anything thats not REVENGE away.
She has more similarity to say Joel in TLOU than Lightning at least in terms of a character arc. The rest of the group does a great job of playing into various aspects of that struggle.

Not only that, but it seems to me like her rage and revenge is what fuels her demonic side. It's her reason for existence as an all consuming demon, the same as Rokurou's is
to fight to become stronger in order to surpass his brother
as a war demon. It seems like whatever your strongest emotion and desire is plays into your transformation into a demon. It makes a nice contrast to the "reason and logic" foundational pillars of the Abbey. Velvet tries hard to be a completely cold, unfeeling bitch, but she fails at that occasionally and lets herself care about her companions to at least some degree.

Yeah, from what I've seen so far Velvet is how to do a revenge focused character right, at least in the context of a party based game since she's not travelling everywhere alone.
At what point am I able to activate my DLC? It's not showing up in the tab for it at all, and I tried restoring my licenses just to be sure but that didn't change anything.

Yup, Velvet is a pretty good main character. Even though she's so edgy 99% of the time (which highly understandable), she still can be cute at times. Her character is also constantly developing, and that's the most important thing.
Better gameplay, better cast, not as good story so far (~50% through and it's hard to judge what I thought of Vesperia's story part way through so long ago ), darker story.
To add in a different perspective. I think it's a step down in most areas, but it's still pretty fun despite flaws (notably area design, music, and balancing). The story is fun, but those issues are holding down an otherwise decent experience.

Story: Berseria
Cast: Very close but slight edge to Vesperia. However Bers has the best cast since Vesperia IMO
Music: Vesperia easily
Battle system: Berseria but Vesperia provided more of a challenge
Ancillary systems: Vesperia
World: Close again but maybe slight edge to Berseria because it has a snow town and more interesting lore
Graphics/art: Vesperia is still very pretty but Berseria looks nice enough and battles are a spectacle. Tie, except for anime scenes where Berseria wins easily.
Mystic Artes: Berseria due to more quantity and great quality. Not sure any one tops Savage Wolf Fury though.
Not to me. Keep in mind I think that Vesperia's story is the least favorite of the Tales games I've played to completion, but it at least had interesting developments.
I remember it roughly:
People live in cities protected by barriers powered by Blastia due to monsters and poisonous aer outside of cities -> find out that Blastia are actually the hearts or whatever of dead dragons who are actually eating the aer after you and the empire have been going around killing dragons-> find out that a space monster is actually trying to get to the planet to devour it and the barrier and the bad guy wants to let him in because he hates blastia -> Rita develop new technique to convert blastia into spirits to power weapon to destroy the space monster
. Meanwhile, Yuri's a stone cold badass who doesn't care about the law in order to do what's right.
Those were at least some interesting twists and turns. Halfway through Berseria, not a single twist so far. Magilou keeps possibly alluding to things but it's been a long fucking time for no payoff at all (~25 hours). Spoilers just in case:
Velvet just still wants revenge, the church is bad for enslaving angels™, and we still haven't found Aifread.
I'm fully willing to admit that by the end, I could end up changing my opinion. But as of now, it's just a bland revenge tale spiced up by colorful, fun characters, and a great battle system.

Yeah except none of that is interesting because it never developed or connected with each other very well. The story in Vesperia changes abruptly and unnaturally.
During the credits, it was showing Velvet and her brother together at an adventure among other things as well such as Aurther and his wife child being born and alive. Is this all a dream scenario or something else? I'm confused
So I've been grouping the enemies up into "dangerous encounters" and man am I levelling way faster, the bonus experience from fighting monsters like that is huge, something 4 or 5 times what you would get fighting them separate. I highly recommend it. Be careful with monsters that can AOE stun though as you have a higher chance of getting stunned when you group.
Also what was everyone complaining about getting Velvets cooking up to max level? I just hit level 19 cooking, which I have only bought ingredients for 3 times, and I'm pretty sure I'm no more than half way through the game. It's really not hard to do if you are using the expedition provided foods.

Are you just sitting there grinding cooking or what? I'm like 25 hours into the game, have auto cooking w/ Velvet on 90% of the time and have only gotten Velvet to rank 5 cooking.
I just finished the forest area actually. You have to get that flower because the crew is suffering from that one sickness. Just fought the beetle boss.

Patch introduced some serious Ear-Rape that happens in every battle, and ToBFIX which people claim fixes it causes the game to crash before the Language options, like Zestiria had going on at launch.

There's one thing that's still bothering me about Velvet though, very early spoilers..
So, she's 16 when the prologue happened, right? She was still a normal, pretty sweet and naive village girl. Then Scarlet Night happened (again), she became a daemon and got locked in the dungeon for three years. That's the keywords, 3 years. Within that amount of time, she has transformed from an average teenager who knows nothing about the world (who also didn't fond of books it seems) to a very mature, knowledgeable individual. I understand her edgy characteristics due to the grudge, but where did she gather all of those knowledge about basically everything? I don't remember that there are books in the prison, and all she did there for the past 3 years were fighting other daemons for survival. It's kinda weird that every time the party members talk about something (that she shouldn't be understand), she clearly understand what they're talking about. Is it a plot hole or am I missing something?
There is also another reason for the crash, that is if you are using a controller, try booting the game with the controller unplugged then after choosing language you can replug it.
