Tanks in the middle of the streets of New York?

When I was in New York there were fully armed military personnel all over the place. I never saw an actual tank though.

Appears to be a personnel carrier and not a tank.

Legally the national guard can be used upon request by the governor for whatever reason. Other than that, the military is expressly forbidden from being the police except in times of martial law.

Thanks. Who has the right to declar martial law? Congress or the President?

President. There was a law made after the Civil War that made it illegal to use the military to police within the US. The southern states were pissed that the Union army was in control of law enforcement in the south.

Yeah I belive the National Gaurd are still stationed through-out the city. You will see them in the major points of interest.

From the link:
I couldn’t believe how many people just waved at the armed soldiers peeking out of the top, many even cheered loudly in support. Nobody took the time to say, “why the hell are armed soldiers and tanks rolling down the middle of the street?!”

Because most people who saw them actually had a brain and knew what they were doing there.

As people said those look like personnel carriers, and are most likely National Guard.

So the question is… what do we do about it?!

The answer is, nothing. They are National Guard troops and if they Governer still wants them guarding areas of New York City, they can be there.

Only Bruce Willis can declare martial law.

Openly armed National Guard troops at strategic points in New York have been a staple of the city since 9/11. You're almost guaranteed to see them at major transportation hubs like Penn Station and Grand Central. Sometimes, yes, they're out on the streets, too. I think this is the first time I've ever heard of (or seen) one of their armored vehicles out in public like this. I'll ask some buddies of mine in the NY office on monday, the office is pretty much right at that intersection.

Well I didn't see any tanks today, I did see a lot of Navy and Marines on leave last week. I usally see cops decked out in Swat gear roaming the Port Athority...my dumb ass immeatly though "Hey Counter Strike" :lol

Every so often I see military personel in major points of interest not so much recently as 4 years ago. No biggie...nothing new. Must have been some mook from out in the sticks making thier trip to the BIG CITY!

bah. no sweat with the national guard. I was in London and saw their cops walking around Heathrow with guns that looked like fucking Anti-Aircraft weapons. I was thinking that for a country that made guns illegal, they sure did have a lot of BFG9000's.
