Spam invites are fucking annoying. I see the group pop-up. That's why I joined the group. I don't need you jumping down my throat every single time you join the server. Jesus.

Also: I like playing in short bursts. Sue me.

Let's just say I'm not exaggerating when I say that you are the single most irritating person with whom I play TF2. You are like a five year old who won't stop asking "WHY?! WHY?!"

b..b...b....b...ut why!? :'(

And let's just say I'm not exaggerating when I say you always whine and complain ALL the time.

"This map sucks"
"Fuck you"
"Your mom is fat"

I knew you were going to say that, and my response is that I haven't initiated any such complaining for a long time, because it stopped amusing me long ago. It's usually you or someone else who says "OHHH TWIG AIN'T COMPLAININ WHAT WRONG DERP DERP", and then I respond in kind: like an idiot.

As for the mom jokes - you're making shit up now. I think I did that a total of once, maybe twice. Hoo boy, you've got problems if you think that's "ALL the time."

Would you like to continue, son?

On a related note, I can personally confirm that Java has no scripts running whatsoever.

More shocking, behind-the-scenes investigative reporting as it breaks.

So fucking close to crafting my first hat. Only need 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10 weapons :|

I only craft spares. I want to keep everything atleast once.

At this juncture, I think it may be prudent to keep at least two of everything. Who knows when you'll need something weird to craft whatever new weapon they come out with next.

The new weapons are just getting annoying. They should just give you two options for every weapon slot., and everybody should start with all weapons.

They're turning tf2 into too much of a joke :( I know it's not meant to be a serious game, but they're adding way too many things which make the game worse (imo).

Nah, I like all the weird touches they're adding into it. Makes the game more interesting and keeps you coming back for more.

If you want srs bsins TF2, you can try 6 vs 6 or comp play where everyone pretty much uses the same weapons in certain situations and there are no critz.

The weapons are fine, but the ways of unlocking them are still bogus. U:

I like the crafting system (it appeals to the stupid in me), but I wish they had found a way to make it only work for hats. So you get all the weapons right away, but you get some weird-ass drops like springs and gears and cloth and wood to make your hats.

An interview with Robin Walker by Kritzkast:
http://www.kritzkast.com/?page_id=521

One tease for the Engineer update:

Kritzkast: Mentioned on the blog was one of the ideas for the Engineer update that was tested and removed. What other design ideas have you tried, tested and rejected in the course of your search for engineer update nirvana?

Robin Walker: One of the other things we tried was a secondary weapon that instantly teleported the Engineer to his teleport exit. So Engineers could leave their sentrygun for a bit to skirmish or collect metal, and be able to immediately teleport back to the sentrygun if something bad happened. It did work at achieving those goals, but we didn’t like the side effects. Teleporters stopped being much of a team focused tool, with Engineers placing them in places that made sense for their personal use, and not necessarily for the team. We also felt it was too easy for Engineers, almost eliminating the risk inside the decision of whether they should leave their nest to grab some resources. Both of these were solvable issues, but while testing this we found another idea that played much better, attacked the same problem of Engineers being rewarded for moving out from their nest occasionally, and had lots of other interesting applications.

Some other choice bits:

Kritzkast: May 12th 2010, saw the introduction of the Steam Client on OSX. How soon will it be till you see TF2 being available on Macs? Up till this point you’ve been developing updates on just one platform. Will the introduction of a second (and possibly third) platform(s) make update releases and bug fixes far more sporadic?

Robin Walker: TF2 should be available for Mac in the next month. The Mac team was very focused on trying to reduce the cost of multi-platform support, and have done their best to automate as much of the process for us. As a result, we’re hoping that it won’t have a significant impact on the rate at which we release updates.
Kritzkast: We have all had epic moments when we’ve tried for and pulled off the impossible move only to realise that we alone saw it and no-one will ever believe it really happened. Back in July 2009 you were recorded as talking of a new demo system. Are you any closer to releasing that into the wild?

Robin Walker: We’re closer, but unfortunately still not ready to release it. The primary function of it is to ensure that after that impossible move happened, you can say “I want to save that!”, and have the game not only save it for you, but also provide you with an easy method of getting it onto your favorite movie sharing site
Kritzkast: We’ve seen PropHunt, Dodgeball and various other brilliant community created mods emmerge as add-on server modes for TF2. Is it your intention to merge these concepts into the final product, exposing them to all TF2 players, or are you simply happy to allow them to exist on their own terms?

Robin Walker: It’s something we think about on a case by case basis. As mods become more popular, we generally start by adding some functionality to solves specific problems the mod authors are having. If it continues to expand in popularity, and fits well enough into a TF2 customer’s expectation of what they might see in front of them when they join a server, we start thinking about building it directly into the game.
Kritzkast: I think I a lot of people are holding their collective breath waiting for the your trading system to go live. Are those plans still on the engineer’s table or did a wayward OMGWTFBBQ incinerate them all?

Robin Walker: We’re still working on trading. It’s been slower to implement than we’d like, mostly because it’s a feature that straddles across the development cycles of both Steam and TF2. So there are pieces of work that we need Steam’s dev team to implement (and they’ve been real busy on the new UI, among other things), and other pieces we need to do ourselves, and we’ve been real busy on the Engineer update and other things we believed were more important. To summarize: yep, still coming. Sorry for the delay.

That's a pretty great interview there. Lots of interesting answers. U:

Nice to hear they're still working on that demo thing.

...I wonder what they're doing with it to make it take so long. Seems like something that should be relatively easy to implement.

Sounds like they want to do something similar to Spore where you can specify an exact clip and have it uploaded directly to Youtube in-game.

The usual combination of ambition and Valve Time, in other words.

Is it just me, or does TF2 load freaking fast now? It's amazing! I've said it a thousand times and I'll say it again, after a long time of adding and adding, seems like they're finally up to tweaking things, like demo player/youtube (that would be sweet even though it was just a gaf post) and tf2 faster loading. It has left 4 dead startup speeds now.

It's fast, but I think it used to be slightly faster at launch, then it got slower and slower, and now it's speeding up again. Still not as fast as cs though lol.

Hmm we need a euro gaf tf2 server :p if only euro gaf tf2 players didn't consist of like 3 people

Jeez, if it is fast now I would have hated to play it earlier. The time it takes to start up TF2 and switch maps is really annoying.

But that said, TF2 is an awesome game and it has been sucking up my hours. When you get bored, you can switch to one of the other classes. I still have absolutely no clue how to play as spy or scout.

Easy. Never attack head on. Always flank and draw attention away as a scout. Be patient as a spy and look for a weakness before attacking. If you're discovered, better to run and fight another day for both classes. Or, be boonoo as a scout or use a douche ringer as a spah!

To play a good scout, just think of yourself as a ninja. You can take down any class if you're stealthy enough, and have good enough aim and timing. The shotgun we have is super powerful at close range, so take advantage of that, and use your speed to dodge projectiles and confuse heavies.

It was fantastic just after the Scout update, trying to sneak around as one on a Payload map, but he'd scream out something about the cart every single time someone started or stopped touching it. Very subtle.

In the recent Valve interview they actually say some pretty neat stuff about the scout that should help out.

Robin Walker: Actually, we always considered the TF2 Scout as a flanking, high damage output character, such that we sometimes even refer to him as the assassin, a Spy who can’t disguise. We felt the Force-A-Nature pushed him even further into that role, having an even higher damage spike, and a lower ranged harassment capability. The Team Fortress Classic Scout was a different creature, being much more of a runner than a fighter. When we designed the TF2 Scout’s character, it was this evolution into a fighter that contributed to him having such an aggressive personality. In retrospect, we probably should have taken the opportunity to name him something other than “scout” at the same time.

Really if you want to start practicing scout (and I'm still practicing--I'm not too terribly good in the grand scheme of thhings; I run really hot and cold with scout and overall my aim and dodging need a lot of work) start by fiddling with your mouse settings.

Really try dropping them down. I started at 17 or so then jumped down to 7 and then smaller steps after that. Now I have my sensitivity at 1 with a dpi of 1800. You want to make big motions with your mouse, so a large mouse pad helps.

Also, try and play scout on more open maps, gpit is fun to scout on while dustbowl is dreadful. Scout's pretty hard to get a handle on in public servers, but since there's so much going on it's easier to nail people while their distracted.

I'd focus on aim first, dodging second. And when you're in the air you're incredibly vulnerable, so when fighting other scouts try not to jump too much as that's when they'll peg you.

Scout is a lot of fun, but can be a real pain in big servers, and when you hit cold streaks and can't hit a thing.

Thanks for these pieces of advice on spy & scout.

I need to learn how to switch weapons faster. The mousewheel is too slow & clumsy. and I have trouble with the numbers since I switch my fingers over 1 key to do WASD and that confuses my brain since the numbers are now shifted over.

Gotta get used the numbers . . . or I gotta use the extra buttons on my programmable mouse.

Yeah that scout shotgun is surprisingly powerful . . . it seems to kill me on 1 hit often.

I finally got better on sniper at least. Still not good but at least not completely useless.

BTW, its a hoot when a team tries crazy things like all Engineers. Doesn't work well but it is worth a laugh.:lol

There is that moment of brain-freezing panic when you're a Scout in a small area and run into 6 Heavies stampeding together.

I really hope they start the Engineer update info today. It's ridiculous just how much I'm hyped for something new from it.

Did you guys do it on GAF too, or were you with me on F7 a few days ago when I said "SCREW IT! EVERYONE ENGIE!!!!"

It's more a hoot when we do it on a 6 vs 6 map and nobody expects it

Yeah, getting quick with weapon changes is vital, especially for the spy. If you're quick enough you can backstab an engineer and switch to the sapper to put it on the gun before it turns around to kill you. That works much better than trying to sap the gun with the engineer still there.

The difference is that it works on 32 man servers (especially if you go something like heavies on a payload map); but you get destroyed 6v6 D:

I've had the most luck with giving each weapon a different button (in close reach). Mouse wheel up, mouse wheel down and mouse 4. I mostly just use Q though, since I almost never use melee.

Oh, you missed the fun. We had 5 heavies then 5 demomen.

After getting wiped on viaduct with the heavies and letting the other team cap the point first, my team put the serious pants on and still won it. Same thing with the demomen. Lost first, then regular classes and came back to win it.

And when we did it on F7, it actually didn't work since they came out with 3-4 heavies with ubers :p

Still hella fun though :lol

im not a fan of number keys or mousewheel either. the best solution is to use scripting to customise binds for each class, but its sort of complicated

I tend to just spam Q haha.

There's usually enough time while running around or away in which to choose your main quick switch weapons.

I tend to baseball then press Q for scattergun (which I set up earlier) as I close, and assuming I can aim they're dead.
Or baseball then pistol if the next area is large, as I can get some good damage in with that and still be able to pop back around the corner (in theory <_< )

I think scripts are a bit cheap in twitch games.

True. It seems to cap off in the vicinity of 200 HP damage with no crits. That would kill a heavy in two shots.

Then again, I've seen Natascha kill a heavy in three shots, no crits, no headshots, nothing AND from twenty or more feet away. It was basically impossible... But lag wins every time.

EDIT: I'm fine with numbers for weapon switching because I've had to do it so much, but the switching is still rather slow. I checked off "Enable quick weapon select" (? something like that) in the advanced menu and it didn't help a whole lot.

104 or 5 (tf2wiki says 105, but I've never seen anything more than 104) for the scatter gun, slightly less for the FAN, is the max for a point blank shot.
