Tech Support GAF Thread: No Case Too Big, No Case Too Small

I'm setting up a public web server for the first time for our company. It's running on Windows Server 2003. I'm playing around with the IIS Manager.

When I go to the server's IP, I get the default web page under construction page, so it's working somewhat. When I go to one of the subdirectories (we have one called "contacts," for example), I get a 401.3 You are not authorized to view this page. I've enabled anonymous access, and I even made IUSR_servername an Administrator, just to try absolute permissions. I'm still getting the same error. Any help? Thanks.

Sorry for the bump but:

Every time I start my computer I seem to have a duplicate network that completely blocks my Internet access and the only way I can fix it is disabling and re-enabling Local Area Connection and then the duplicate disappears but when I boot up my computer the next day it does the exact same thing.

It's getting tiresome.

Maybe GAF can help:

I have Fujitsu Storagebird 35EV820 (model: s07 j0601 Rev. 1.1, to be precise) which doesn´t really work anymore. It works maybe one time out of twenty when I plug it in, so I guess it´s a loose contact or a defective power cord. As of late it seems to not work at all.

So I guess I have to get a new cable and hope for the best?

Ideas how to get it working again would be great, there´s a lot of baby pictures on there as the only backup, since the hard disk in my sister´s mac died.

This is odd, whenever I try to visit apple.com on this computer, I immediately get "Http/1.1 Service Unavailable". I tried on another computer so I know the site's up, but on this computer I get that in Firefox, Chrome and IE9. Even weirder, I can access the iTunes Store in iTunes fine.

It automatically logs me into Youtube, and I don't really want that :/

Depending on the browser if you start a new private session(aka porn mode) nothing is logged in.

I could use some advice..

My gf was using her netbook and got a message or chat or something from a facebook "Friend" that she doesn't know. Suddenly her internet stopped working. After explaining to her that it is a bad idea to add "e-friends" that you don't know and open things from them, I tried to fix it. I installed MS Security Essentials and it immediately shut down.

Now, when I try to boot, the keyboard and mouse are disabled, so I can't log in to Windows and try to fix the problem. I can get into the BIOS and the keyboard works, but I can't think of any reason that helps the situation. If worse comes to worse, I can restore the computer. Apparently it has a built in restoration option (not the windows system restore.. it's before windows starts) if you press F3 while booting..

She also bought Windows 7 (an upgrade?) for the netbook.. I think it was one of those easy windows update upgrades, so I have no idea how she will be able to get that back since I doubt she kept the product key (I'm assuming it gave her one..). If I restore, will Microsoft keep track of her upgrade or will I need to contact them about getting the upgrade back?

Is there anyway to try and save anything on her HDD in the case that I have to use the restore option?

Thanks for any help!

how about Safe Mode?

Yeah, sorry I should have mentioned that. I've tried both USB and safemode.. It's still disabled. The only time I can get control of either is in BIOS Setup or the recovery program.

damn it. and this is a netbook...so no access to a USB DVD drive either?

If you had that, I would have recommend trying the Repair utility on the Win 7 DVD.

I assume you already tried the "Restore last good configuration that worked." or whatever that option is in the startup menu (the one that lists Safe Mode and its iterations)?

If there's no way around this, I'd recommend attaching the netbook's HDD to an external HDD adapter and copying any important data off of it, then restoring with that built-in utility. Might have to buy something temporarily to do this, but it's the only way to save her data. If she had nothing of consequence on the machine, just blow it away.

Yeah, no optical drive. I'm hoping for maybe some kind of USB flash drive utility, but I've never had the need for something like that.

When I reboot it just gives the safe mode options (+network,+somethingelsethatitotallyforgot) and to boot normally. No option for last good config.

I'll have to see if I can find an external HDD adapter that would allow a netbook HDD.

I don't think she has anything important on there (She says "I don't know, probably" when I ask her if she does.. she's 20.. lol), so if I have to, I'll just restore it and hope that nothing VERY important is on there.

Only other thing I can think of is possibly installing some type of OS on a flash drive and using that to search the folders for anything important.. I've never done anything like that, and I think I've only heard of that being done on a blog, so I don't know if that's really feasible.

I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 due to a virus. So I wiped everything clean and installed Windows 7. Problem is it wouldn't let me install on my 106 GB partition and instead forced me to install on the 40 GB(I kept getting 'Error: 0x8004240F").

Now I have 106 GB that like I can't use. So I go to disk management and try to merge or extend or something, but it won't let me delete the 106 GB partition, it keeps saying there is not enough space on disk(s) to complete operation.

Here is a pic of what I'm looking at:

let her think about what may be on the netbook. Software, music and movies are replaceable. documents, home videos and photos may not be.

The netbook should have a 2.5" HDD in it (if it's over 120GB it definitely is), so external HDD enclosures should be easy to find. If you buy from someplace like Best Buy, you can take it back when you're done with it and get your money back.

With the enclosure, you just slide the HDD in and plug it into the USB port on a working computer. Pretty painless. The hard part is helping her remember where she's saved all of her shit. Grab the bookmarks, My Documents, and Desktop folders, minimum. My Music and My Videos as well.

If she uses Outlook or another dedicated e-mail program, you'll want to grab the folder that stores its data as well.

Suggestions?
Right-Click on the Green "Free Space" block --> Format --> NTFS. Follow the rest of the instructions (may ask you to choose a drive letter).

See if it becomes usable.

No such option. Only gives me the option to delete partition and then it says there isn't enough space to complete task or add volume, which also doesn't work with the same error message about space.

New Simple Volume, then.

Perhaps in that dialogue you'll be able to Format it and give it a drive letter. If not, right-click after doing the Simple Volume. Format will be an option.

I'll try that if she thinks there's anything worth saving on it. She's not very computer savvy (obviously.. lol), so I'm guessing most of it would be in My Documents and desktop. I doubt there's much to save, aside from maybe pictures (her mom passed away recently and I don't know if she has her pics of them saved elsewhere).

Anyway, thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

Thanks for the help, but when I do the go thru Simple Volume and choose the size of it(no matter what size I choose it still doesn't work), next step I assign a letter, then next step Format this volume to NTFS, preform quick format. Click Finish and it says not enough space. Kinda annoying, I dunno what I did to muck it all up....

Laptop beeping noise when I plug/unplug to charge

It's a annoying feature that my laptop has. Every time I plug or unplug it, it does a loud beeping noise. I've tried googling this but it's not working for me whenever I try it

Tried this method and it didn't work.

but when I do nothing like his shows up, this is the only option

wow wtf

I'm stumped. the only thing I see online about it involves completely reformatting.

I tried re-installing Windows 7 and choosing that volume to install on, but it has no option to delete or reformat, only create new, and when I create new, it says not enough space. I just don't get it. It only lets me install on the 40 GB volume.

If you have one drive on the computer and you don't care about re installing Windows 7, it doesn't matter.

Past week or so, Bad Company 2 has been causing my system to lock up completely; no BSOD, nothing I can do except to hit the reset button.

Current hardware config:
Windows 7 x64 (all recent updates)
Asus P8Z68-V Pro
2600k @ 4GHz
8GB ram
6950 (most recent drivers 11.6b)

No memory.dmp file is generated, nothing shows up in the minidump folder either. Nothing of note in event viewer other than telling me it was unexpectedly shut down; I do get some WMI event 10 error but various google searching has revealed that it isn't anything.

I haven't installed anything new lately except for HWinfo (which I uninstalled this morning, BC2 crashed a few mins ago)

I actually reinstalled BC2 and the patch last night so I don't think it's the game either.

Last week I did reinstall my audigy 2 sound card (but did not disabled onboard audio):
- did not have any problems for a few days of BC2 --> then crash
- so I disabled onboard audio in bios --> crash
- removed audigy 2 card, enabled onboard audio --> crash

Tried /sfc scannow and nothing showed up.

I didn't have any problems either with my OC to 4.0GHz for the past few weeks, didn't change anything either until the problems started to pop up.

I did notice that my DRAM was for some reason at 1.6xx rather than 1.50 yesterday; so I changed that and still got the lockup.

Put everything on default in bios before this post, disabled the SATA Marvell controller that I don't use and will test things again.

Will play BC2 again along with other games and see what happens.

My GPU temps were under 60, my GPU load was 90-100% in game.

I'll update my bios, if there is an update, and see if it helps

A friend of mine has been having some serious issues involving BSOD's on Windows 7 Home Premium x64. He BSOD's watching videos/playing games, but does not just browsing or using Windows.

Now, unfortunately he didn't come to me first and instead went to a friend that told him to replace basically every goddamn thing in his computer. He's literally replaced CPU, GPU, Mobo, RAM and PSU. Afaik he has not replaced his HDD (this is key) but he has changed the SATA cable (this will make sense later on).

So, after a good few weeks of this I finally caught wind of it, and got him to download some software that showed what the BSOD error was (trust me, it was easier for me to tell him to do that rather than have him turn off auto-restart). The culprit seems to be ataport.sys, which makes me think it's his harddrive (I can provide memory.dmp if needed, though).

There's plenty of stuff all over Google about ataport.sys crashes, but I decided to check in with GAF anyway. I'm about to tell him to get a new hard drive and give that a whirl, because I'm thinking the issue is with the sata connection to the actual hard drive.

Basically GAF, am I right here? Google is kind of all over the place. My other option is to have him do sfc /Scannow or chkdsk C: /r /f.

Any advice?

I'm running 32bit Vista and this is the 2nd time that I have gotten a message stating that the Data Execution Prevention app has been shut down. Time to panic? How do I turn it back on?

Just in case someone gets here via the magic of Google with the same issue; we updated Windows completely and installed new chipset drivers. All has been well since.

My computer will not stop making the "Asterisk" sound. It seems to do it every 30-40 minutes. I have not idea when it started or why. I tried to delete the sound file but windows 7 would not let me. Its pissing me off. What do I do?

maybe a key on your keyboard is stuck and making contact, try another keyboard to see if thats the problem

Asked this in the Gaming Forum, but maybe this is a better place:

Been trying to connect my PC to a new HDTV I just bought and cannot get it to work. My PC seems to have an HDMI out, but I don't get any signal. Is there a way to check if the HDMI port is functional or just there for future upgrade? Is there something I'm supposed to do to enable it?

My graphics card is a Raedon HD 4600 and I'm on Vista if it matters.

Hey Tech Support Gaf, I've got an issue with my CD/DVD drive.

Basically, it won't read or write any CDs or DVDs. I've swapped out this faulty drive for two other working drives and my computer isn't recognizing either of them.

I'm not really sure what to do. I think the issue may have to do with the motherboard or power supply, but I don't know how to diagnose it. Would anyone here recommend using an external CD drive? Or are those mainly for laptops/netbooks?

Nope, that is definitely not it. Any other suggestions? I feel like it is a background program that is causing the problems.

Lost all credibility.
Kind of a random question, why doesn't Irfanview play animated gifs at the same framerate as, say, Firefox or Chrome? It'd be nice not to always have to drag a gif into a browser window to see what it really looks like.

Is it the Google one where it takes you to some random advertising site when you click on a link from a search? I had that one and had to reformat to get rid of it. Every suggestion and fix did not work.

hey guys,

im having a huge ass problem with my pc security. i think i have too many security software installed and maybe theyre preventing each other from cleaning up virus' efficiently (if thats even possible) as i keep getting the same ones popping up over and over again.

this is what i currently have installed:

- symantec endpoint protection
- microsoft security essentials
- ad aware
- spybot
- malwarebytes

which should i keep and which should i get rid of? i dont think symantec has ever done shit for me

For my customers i always put Panda Antivirus on their computer because it is very light and installs quick.
and keep Malwarebytes if you suspect you have something. delete the other shit though

That's the one. I have a lid on it for the moment by disabling redirects in Firefox. It's not just searches though. Stuff like the GAF ad rotation causes FF to notify me it blocked a redirect attempt. Bleah.

well most of those don't run (even in the background) unless you turn them on.

unless you're asking multiple apps to scan *at the same time*, MSE, Ad Aware, Spybot and Malwarebytes should have no problems coexisting.

dunno anything about endpoint protection, though.

Yesterday I had the bad idea of putting my computer in sleep mode, and it never woke up again. No life signs except the fans running at low speed, hard resets/power offs didn't help. Something similar already happened to me once (I wasn't sure about the cause, even though I kind of suspected the computer entering sleep mode for inactivity), and tech support solved by resetting the BIOS. So I did, by removing the battery and putting it in again, and everything seems to be working again.

Now, though, I see my video card is running pretty hot (stable at 58-59°C idle). Everything else seems pretty normal, around 40-42°C tops (local temperature is 27°C according to Windows, probably higher in my room). Fan speeds are also the same as usual (Sys: 1220 RPM, CPU: 1960 RPM).

Should I be worried? Could resetting the BIOS have messed up something (I admit I never touch voltage settings) that could be causing the GPU temp to go up? I haven't been checking the video card temperature lately, so I have no idea what it used to be before the reset, but I think I remember it being around 35°C a couple of months ago.

EDIT: Added HWMonitor readings:
vk2fz.png

Going by AUXTIN being 29°, I'd say the local temperature in my room is <= 29°C then.

EDIT 2: Tried playing some Metro 2033, the video card gets to 75°C

EDIT 3: Uhm... after staying idle for a bit, the video card seems stabilized at 42-45°C.

Ok, trying to hook up my PC to my TV and I've made progress, but still have issues.

My TV is finally picking up a signal now that I'm using a DVI to HDMI converter. Problem is, it only shows the desktop background image and nothing else; no icons and when I launch a video or game, it continues just to show just the desktop background image. What am I missing?

Also, is there any chance the DVI to HDMI will transmit an audio signal as well? If not, how can I get the audio to come through on the TV when the video is on a different input?

You probably set your multiple display setup as "extend this display", which means the TV is treated as a separate monitor instead of cloning the contents of the main screen.
I'm not sure how you change this setting on Vista, but on Win7 right click on any empty spot of your desktop -> Screen Resolution and change the multiple display setup from there.
