A teenager in the United States is facing manslaughter charges for allegedly encouraging an 18-year-old friend by text message to take his own life.

Michelle Carter, now 18, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in relation to the death of Conrad Roy in Massachusetts last year, reports by US-based media outlets say.

Carter, who was 17 at the time, was alleged to have encouraged Roy to take his own life by sending him a series of text messages including some that implied he would be happier once dead.

Roy was later found dead in a vehicle in a parking lot in Fairhaven on July 13, 2014.

Carter met Roy in 2012 and formed an online relationship via the internet and mobile phone communication.

An indictment issued by a Bristol County Grand Jury alleges that between July 6 and July 12, Carter assisted Roy to take his own life via dozens of messages.

CARTER: You can't think about it. You just have to do it. You said you were gonna do it. Like I don't get why you aren't.

ROY: I don't get it either. I don't know.

CARTER: So I guess you aren't gonna do it then. All that for nothing. I'm just confused. Like you were so ready and determined.

ROY: I am gonna eventually. I really don't know what I'm waiting for but I have everything lined up.

CARTER: No, you're not, Conrad. Last night was it. You kept pushing it off and you say you'll do it, but you never do. It's always gonna be that way if you don't take action. You're just making it harder on yourself by pushing it off. You just have to do it. Do you want to do it now?

ROY: Is it too late? I don't know. It's already light outside. I'm gonna go back too sleep. Love you. I'll text you tomorrow.

CARTER: No. It's probably the best time now because everyone is sleeping. Just go somewhere in your truck and no one is really out there right now because it's an awkward time. If you don't do it now you're never gonna do it, and you can say you'll do it tomorrow, but you probably won't. Tonight? Love you.

Even if she, HYPOTHETICALLY, truly loved him, and saw that suicide was the only way out for him (Highly highly doubt it) the calculated and cold way that she spoke to him, that's not love.

Something's wrong with her.

CARTER: Okay. I'm serious. Like you can't even wait 'till tonight. You have to do it when you get back from your walk.

ROY: Thank you.

CARTER: For what?

ROY: Still being here.

CARTER: I would never leave you. You're the love of my life, my boyfriend. You are my heart. I'd never leave you.

ROY: Aw.

CARTER: I love you.

ROY: Love you, too.

No. No you didn't love him.

The girl is a psycho.

That conversation is truly fucked. Encouraging her friend to kill himself and ending with "Love you."

This is so heartbreaking. I can't even imagine the anger I would feel if someone would have sent those texts to my brother or family member.

CARTER: Okay. So you gonna do it?

ROY: I guess.

CARTER: Well, I want you to be ready and sure. What does that mean?

ROY: I don't know. I'm freaking out again. I'm over thinking.

CARTER: I thought you wanted to do this. This time is right and you're ready. You just need to do it. You can't keep living this way. You just need to do it like you did the last time and not think about it and just do it, babe. You can't keep doing this every day.

ROY: I do want to but I'm like freaking for my family I guess. I don't know.

CARTER: Conrad, I told you I'll take care of them. Everyone will take care of them to make sure they won't be alone and people will help them get through it. We talked about this and they will be okay and accept it.

ROY: I know. I know. LOL. Thinking just drives me more crazy.

CARTER: You just need to do it, Conrad, or I'm gonna get you help. You can't keep doing this everyday.

ROY: Okay. I'm gonna do it today.

CARTER: You promise?

ROY: I promise, babe. I have to now.

CARTER: Like right now?

ROY: Where do I go?

CARTER: And you can't break a promise. And just go in a quiet parking lot or something.

ROY: Okay.

CARTER: Go somewhere you know you won't get caught. You can find a place. I know you can. Are you doing it now?

Thats some fucking crazy shit

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
She obviously has issues herself. Probably she is suicidal too.

Ugh. I hope she wastes her youth in prison. This deserves 10-20 years imo because it's so horrible and she had so many chances to turn it around. This looks less like "encouraging" suicide and more like convincing him to do it.

What a fucking cunt. You don't even try to help someone who's been contemplating killing themselves? I get that it was his idea, but to intentionally keep guilting the guy because he hadn't killed himself yet is a fucking disgrace.

What kind of person pushes for someone to do such a thing to themselves? What happened in her life to cause her to do encourage him doing what he did?

According to her lawyer, she tried to help but was...brainwashed.

Jesus. At first I thought she was just calling his bluff, thinking he was threatening suicide/self-harm for attention, but nope, she's giving him advice. Twisted.

Yeah, I think she definitely crossed the line from just being supportive of his decision to actually encouraging him to go through with it when he had doubts.

Horrible. She could have helped him simply because she knew he was thinking of doing it. Instead she pushes him into it. He might not even have done it because it sounds like he was delaying it.

Thankfully people know what she did and that shame can follow her.

When someone vulnerable and hopeless reaches out to you, you don't push them off the edge. I can't believe how heartless she was.

What a psycho. She had the chance to stop him (it seems he didn't really want to do it until he was pressured and brainwashed by someone he loved) so many times and instead she fucking keeps trying to encourage him.

Make an example out of her.

Back in the AOL days (late 90s) I used to frequent chat rooms and have convos with people. I recall two girls who told me they wanted to commit suicide (this is after weeks of chatting) and were ready to do it. I spent hours with one and weeks with the other. Long story short, I talked them out of it (I hope). I was actually considering becoming a life coach.

Back to this horrible story. I know the lawyer is doing his job, but with the text logs he sounds like a real asshole making those claims.

She did ask him to delete the messages too, poor guy was so vulnerable he couldn't connect 2 and 2 together, what a monster.

That's not dumb, or stupid. Came into the thread ready for a strange, confusing situation with someone being incorrectly charged...blown away.

This girl is fucked, both mentally and legally.
