Tencent has paid USD 80 million to acquire 15.75% of Arrowhead Game Studios (Studio is valued at USD 532 million)

The PS guy needs to have a guy behind him fucking his ass with the word Bungie over him.

Think that's a fair take. Hopefully we see some changes as a result.
I honestly always try to be fair with my criticism.

Like even though I criticized Phil a lot, there have been a ton of positives for Xbox players this gen that wouldn't have been possible had he not took over. Talking about the negative without mentioning the positives just doesn't further good conversations about gaming imo.

Arrowhead has already said they want their next game to be self funded and 'independent'. Selling to Sony doesn't exactly allow them to do that.

Well, that makes sense then.

I believe Mibu no ookami Mibu no ookami is correct then, its more then what many understand as Sony can't just buy a team not for sale and them agreeing to have Tencent buy this portion might be something they are more ok with vs selling the entire studio. Some studios remain independent for generations before they accept a publisher's offer to sell.

So overall, this seems like most in the thread are trying to argue a fake narrative to argue...

The PS guy needs to have a guy behind him fucking his ass with the word Bungie over him.

I mean most likely something will come to head with their next game. It'll probably be their first time making a game with Unreal Engine, they're going to lose 5% of their revenue to Epic and 20-30% to all the platform holders and they're going to assume all of the risks.

Meanwhile, they'll be tethered unfavorably to Helldivers. Sony has the Helldivers moving coming out, if that takes Helldivers to the next level and Sony simply gets someone else to do Helldivers 3 and Arrowheads next game isn't a big success, there goes their valuation....

Maybe they've built enough of a fanbase here that will follow them, but we're going to see how this plays out over the next 4-5 years or so.

When they were made co-ceos I said that the situation wouldn't last and that they were in competition with each other. Nishino had a lot of success while Hulst continued to have fuck up after fuck up.
Is it true Sony redirected a lot of their devs to assist in Helldivers update production? Devs from Concord etc? If so they'll be in a better position to continue support if Arrowhead ever pulls out.

Talk about being inneficient. Sony had it all to buy some shares in Arrowhead even before the success of Helldivers 2 and now they are getting what they deserve. If anything the whole western branch of Playstation should go.

Imagine Sony spent 400 million for Firewalk Studio and Concord when they could've had Arrowhead and Helldivers :messenger_grimmacing_
It's the idiots at the top. To them Helldivers 2 is small potatoes. They think with enough money they can have their own Fortnite. What they don't understand is that will never happen.

Tencent has an interesting strategy to companies. I dont think they 100% buy out that many. But what they prefer doing is buy in a stake in a company. They got a seat at the table, but dont go overboard taking all the risk if the studio bombs in the future.

The good thing about Tencent is that they don't influence the artistic vision. They want results, mostly. They only act as facilitators when the game aims the Chinese market. Shift Up had to make lot of adjustments with Nikke, but that's the way it is.

What I can also add is that a lot of Japanese developers don't want to work with current PlayStation and how they do things either, they just don't have much of a choice and do so reluctantly.
Bullshit.

Kojima Productions had everyone from Epic Games, Tencent, Microsoft and even Stadia fighting to fund his next game after Death Stranding - but Hermen Hulst, one of the earlier supporters of the new KJP, went on to secure partnerships for both DS2 and Physint. Arc System Works could've easily taken on a Dragon Ball FighterZ sequel, another Persona fighter or any other contract game instead of the Marvel game with Sony - yet they didn't. Team Ninja are mercenaries, working with Nintendo, Microsoft and even EA - they didn't have to partner with Sony to get Rise of the Ronin out of the door but they did so.

And when the end result after partnering with PlayStation is usually a Game-of-the-Year-quality title that sells millions, there just isn't much to be dissatisfied with. If anything, AAA Japanese development has flourished over Hermen's tenure compared to the late Shuhei Yoshida and Layden years.

Not Concord, and even if it somehow was they shuttered the studio entirely anyways.

Its most likely XDEV staff.

You're making making a mountain out of a molehill.

It's a simple investment, Tencent buys out protion of shares as a form of both funding and future deposit (next AH game is self-published), 15.7% is not even enough for a serious leverage. Tencent did the same with Remedy just recently.

They have no interest in acquiring the team, hell, they even own a portion of Kadokawa. And no, Sony don't need to rush and add yet another team to the management WWS mess. They can buy some shares back from Tencent for their next project with Arrowhead if needed.

With MS people kinda forgot that not every relationship are based on complete buyout.

Avoiding studios with too little purple hair and pride flags floating around

It's so refreshing not seeing that fucking trash plastered everywhere this year, glad alot of places realized that these assholes aren't special and don't need a whole fucking month.. Love to see it

Ok

*15% coming from Tencent
That's why 'independent' is in quotes. They're still technically independent, and Tencent probably cares less about how they do outside of China at this point than Sony does. This is probably the best course of action they could have taken once they decided to "self fund/self publish" their next game.

From what I understand, given that I actually know someone at Arrowhead. But I don't want to claim I'm an "insider" because they rip things out of proportion really bad.

1. Sony and Arrowhead still have a relatively good relationship, but it won't go any further
2. Both Arrowhead and Sony are to blame for their relationship not being what it used to be
  • Arrowhead nerfing all fun in the game for a while and changing things for the worse, which drove a lot of players away
  • Sony pressuring to try and get Arrowhead to monitise HD2 a lot more than it is(basically not much) and Arrowhead resisting. From what I understand, what monetisation Sony wanted bordered on ridiculous
  • Arrowhead's next game will not have anything to do with Sony in any way shape or form, and Arrowhead will never do anything with Sony in any way, shape or form ever again

Believe me or don't believe me. I could very well be making all of this up.

P.S. Not Arrowhead or Sony related

Nacon's patience with Spiders(developer) is also running thin. If it doesn't release as promised this year, and doesn't perform really well, they will be closed down.
Yeah I really doubt that, of all publishers Sony is one of the best in the industry for how they handle monetisation. They rarely charge for dlc and when they do its extremely reasonable such as the expansion for Ghost. So yeah don't believe for a second they wanted outrageous monetisation.
If anything Arrowheads work ethic and lack of output is why their relationship has soured.

People in here are quoting Paul Tassi, his wording suggested bad blood, the whole 'be free of playstation' is literally in his article title. The actual quote from Johan literally says they will work again with Playstation, that they are great partners, that they just made so much profit on HD2 they want something they can call all the shots on.
Definitely making a mountain out of a mole hill. Theres zero need for Sony to rush to buy out the studio for a cool Half billion when they have ONE successful game to their name. Hell Sony own the IP anyway so thats the true value anyway…
