Cool, thanks.

That's just false.

So my gf found this one "HP Envy 14-k008tx Sleekbook"

here are her preferences again

She is paying 740€ in Korea, should she take it?

That's fine but if she want to save some money she could buy the Acer V5-552g which has a similar power to this one maybe a little bit more since the GPU is GCN which supports Mantle and the AMD A10 is a quad core processor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314181 I bought mine from Otto in germany for only 499€ but I don't think they ship into the outland

I didn't made good experiences with HP, their service is awesome but my HP Probook 4535s had 2 times a mainboard failure without any reason...

thanks for the reply. But the laptop you mentioned has only 6gb of ram and also an AMD cpu (I think the OP has a warning on those). kinda torn now.

You can add up to 12 GB to the system, I would recommend 8 GB Dual Channel.

The OP warned for nothing because APUs are good and the CPU performance is absolutely enough for all types of applications. With Mantle the CPU bottleneck will be removed either way for unoptimized games.

I need a new laptop. At the moment I'm considering a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon. Do any of you have any suggestions for a fairly light and moderately powerful Linux-compatible model? I need a real operating system so no Chromebook recommendations please.

Mandatory requirements:
Country: Sweden
Maximum budget: 15000 SEK ($2274/£1409), but preferably a bit less.
Max size: 14-15" screen, weight less than 2 kg.
OS: Linux, probably Mint
Screen resolution: At least 900p
Planned usage: Coding and data analysis

I'm trying to do a bit of research for somebody who wants a high-end, money-is-no-object laptop. They wont be gaming on it or anything.

I'm thinking the Asus Zenbook UX301 is probably a good bet, but am curious about the resolution. It has a 1440p display, but I've read that Windows doesn't have good scaling for that? I'm not quite sure how much of an issue that is, though. Anybody have any experience with a Windows-based, super hi res laptop? This will need to be useable, not just pretty.

Also, if there's any other suggestions for top of the line laptops(needs to be touchscreen as well), I'd be glad to listen.

was going to say just go MacBook Pro but the touchscreen requirement knocks it out

Sony has some really good ones from what I've seen

Hey guys,

my gf (she lives in Seoul, South Korea) wants a new laptop. she told me those things are important to her:

- should be relatively light (bluray/dvd not required)
- 13inch screen (or maybe 14inch but not much bigger)
- she wants to play a game from time to time, but mainly for university (she plays civ5 at the moment)
- around 600-800€

could you recommend me one?

thanks!
Link a few online retailers so I can see what's going in that price range.

K.Jack are your running your 780m at default clock?

Yeah, for right now. There aren't yet any games I play, which can't be maxed at 1080p, so I haven't bothered with overclocking.

I'll get into that when the next-gen games start coming out, next year.

Do you have a question about 780M overclocking?

Somebody linked slickdeals computer/laptop page. I also saw that there will be a bunch of sales next week. I guess I should wait until then?

Yeah waiting until Black Friday seems to be a wise decision.

Please. AMD's best quad core mobile CPUs barely beat Intel's mobile Core i3s. They're garbage as far as gaming is concerned.
That's just false.
Feel free to explain your opinion.

This person wants to run Dark Souls 2, at I assume higher than low settings and resolution. My statement about a $500 laptop being a good idea stands.

Hmm. The X1 Carbon is pretty tough to beat. If you like it, I say go for it.

Doesn't Windows 8.1 has some new scaling features, specifically for UHD displays?

Hi guys, I am in the UK and can get this laptop brand new for £471. I want it for games I can't get on consoles especially Civiliaztion, Tropico type games, Tycoon games etc.

I will be running at native res and I need a laptop anyways for general use.

Do you think this is worth £471, should it play the games I am talking about no bother? Is there a better option at £471?

Good morning!

I have a question. I want to run X: Rebirth at some point at maximum settings on the laptop I also need for photo and video editing. The laptop I'm looking at is the OP

========================
MSI G Series GT70
Intel Core i7-4700MQ Processor (3.2 - 3.4 GHz, 6M Cache)
8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM
NVIDIA Geforce GTX770M
1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
17.3-Inch Screen
Windows 8
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CU9GLUM/?tag=neogaf0e-20
=======================
And X: Rebirth's requirements are

Intel i5 (Quad) / i7 with 2.5GHz or equivalent AMD product
8 GB RAM
Nvidia GT500 Serie with 1GB RAM or more, ATI 5870HD with 1GB RAM or more
DirectX: Version 9.0c
12 GB available space
DirectX 9.0c-compatible soundcard
=======================

Are those two GPU's comparable? Would that laptop work for me?

Sup Gaf-Hopper.

I just started reading through this performance thread on the Steam community, and it seems like the flawed engine means the game runs very poorly across the board, regardless of settings.

I can only recommend that you don't buy X: Rebirth while it's in such a broken state.

About the GTX 770M. It is a desktop GTX 660 w/ different clock speeds, and GPU Boost 2.0 tech. Pretty decent card.

Thanks. I know about Rebirth being shit right now, but it's being patched, so far, every day. It'll be a real boy one day. I just know it will.

So, that laptop seems to be the right choice. Thanks!

Ok guys, so someone took my power adapter for my NP9150. I'm pretty upset since I now cannot use my computer for awhile (the elder scrolls beta is this and I actually had some free time). I know my Sager laptop is an older model, so it is hard for me to find a replacement adapter. Where can I find one?

Directly through Sager, or check eBay. Sager is charging $110, eBay looks like $69.99 is the cheapest.

Are there traditionally any decent sales on gaming laptops on Black Friday or Cyber Monday? I am in the market to replace my aging Asus G73.

Hi all, I need a laptop to replace this one.

Country: USA
Budget: $500-$600
Size: at least 15.6 in. screen
Usage: With the previous system I was able to play indie and older classic PC stuff just fine, with the occasional console (360/PS3) port being more demanding. Depending on how optimized or CPU dependent the game was, I could at best run some ports at either twice the console resolution or framerate, the other being equal. I'm generally fine with 1366x768 resolution and if I could run Dota 2 at 60fps at that resolution, that'd be great. I have zero expectations of running next-gen stuff.
Misc: I'm concerned about the CPU, since it looks like clockspeeds are going down, but some older games aren't multi-core so it seems like that'd lead to worse performance. I'd like to at least match what I previously had if possible.

Thanks for your time.

I'm pretty new to understanding laptop hardware. I've noticed when checking CPU benchmarking scores for various laptops that laptops in the same price range can have vastly different scores. So for example, a laptop can be $700 and have a CPU with a score of 7700, and another laptop could be the same price (or more) and have a CPU with a score of 3400.

Is that actually representative of the power difference between those laptops or am I looking too much into the scores, or even reading the scores wrong? Here's an example:

This $700 laptop comes with a i7 4700HQ, rated at 8157 by Passmark.

This $1000 dollar laptop comes with a Intel Core i7 3537U, rated at 3917 by Passmark.

1080 resolution, 6GB Ram, 750HDD, looks nice, and has a haswell CPU. I don't buy laptops with the intention of playing games on them, so anything that does run on them is just a cherry on top.

I just want it to be fast, responsive, able to handle media without issue, and work-related stuff. Haswell being in it is a plus because of battery life obviously.

Should I wait for deals later this week or just nab this now?

Yes, there should be some decent deals. Nothing mind blowing, but a hundred or so off wouldn't be surprising.

Coming from the 5870M (or GTX 460M?), you'll need to look for the GTX 765M, 750M SLI, or a GTX 770M, as starting points.

Well, you're comparing a 17W ultra-low voltage dual core (i7-3537U) to a 47W quad core (i7-4700HQ), so yeah, the difference is in power noticeably huge.

But what maters is what you need. If you're here for a laptop recommendation, please do it in the format from the OP.

I doubt this particular laptop will get any cheaper, so it's safe to buy now. Machines with 1080p displays are almost never that lowly priced.

But Black Friday and Cyber Monday are looming, and you never know what could go on sale.

Max Budget: $1250
Screen Size: 15-17in
Games: I only want to play indie games, smaller games, etc. Not really into big AAA games.
Other:

I am a computer science student looking to use this laptop for using IDEs and web browsers at the same time (my current laptop runs Visual Studio like shit).

Thing is, I have low vision. So naturally I want to get a 17 inch. However, I am looking also looking at convertible laptops like this one that can double as a 15in tablet. This might be a powerful tool for reading ebooks in the library (I hate reading printed text because I cannot zoom it), which would be uncomfortable otherwise.

I know I can get a 17 inch that is more powerful, for less money, than what is offered there. But that still wouldn't solve the problem of "reading sucks for me", which I believe having a big tablet could solve. Do you think VS could run well on this or this or this? I'd hate to pay a grand+ for a laptop with a smaller screen that still runs VS like crap.

Note: I notice that these are getting bad reviews now, but it's seemingly because of driver issues that have been fixed. This just released.

The VAIO Flip would definitely run the newest Visual Studio.

My concern is that the 1080p res, on a 15" screen, would be pretty small for your poor vision.

Gonna ask for some advice as well. Hope you guys don't mind.

Country: USA

Max Budget: $1000 - 1250 at a stretch.

Screen Size: Not Particular - NEEDS to be 1080p though. Do not need touchscreen.

Usage: I'd be mainly using this machine on the road when I visit family for the holidays soon. I 3D model items for Team Fortress 2 so I need a machine with decent horsepower that can handle running programs like Zbrush, Autodesk Maya, and Photoshop.
Additionally I'd like to use it for video editing in Adobe Premiere. This means I need a dedicated GPU instead of integrated graphics.

Misc: Good keyboard is pretty important, because I use hotkeys in Maya all day long. Less particular about trackpad because I plan on having a mouse plugged in most of the time anyway. If possible I'd like to find a laptop that wont turn into a hot iron on my lap, but I understand in this power class and price range I might not get that lucky.

That's fine, I'll just turn the resolution down to 1366 x 768 (as I do now). I'm fine with not running it at native resolution. Plus, Windows' text and UI scaler helps.

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably get it.

How strong of a GPU does your 3D modeling work require? In desktop terms.

lol, the y510p black friday price is $60~ more than the coupon they had that ended on the 20th.

And then they'll probably have a better coupon in a week or so. Weird.

Well, currently I am using a 660ti but that is overkill for my TF2 modeling, however I have just started working in UE4 recently. (Yay, I can say that now!) That can be a power hog, so I think GPU might be my top priority in a purchase. Thanks for the help!

I'm not looking for any major gaming. Kids will use them for school work, video, music, internet and some Minecraft or similar games.

Not really, it should be fine without it unless I start doing serious 3D stuff. I might get a Geforce GTX 735M with the laptop just in case (and for light gaming, though I'd never run anything above 768p anyway...).

Alright then, prioritizing GPU, the best you'll get for your budget is the GTX 765M, which is a derivative of the GTX 650 Ti Boost. The machines I'd like you to take a look at are the Sager NP7350 and NP7370. They start at just under $1k, prior to customization.

I'm going to recommend that you do take the 735M upgrade, especially now that I see it's as cheap as a $30 upgrade.
Alright.

Would you recommend the i7-4500U over the i5-4200U? Benchmarks say there's only a marginal difference between the two, but the i7-4500U is $150 more than the i5-4200U.

- The 4200U is 1.6GHz stock, and will turbo to 2.6GHz with 1 core active, and 2.3Ghz with 2 cores active
- The 4500U is 1.8Ghz stock, and will turbo to 3.0Ghz with 1 core active, and 2.6Ghz with 2 cores active

I personally wouldn't pay $150 for such a difference, which is around ~13%.

Can anybody help me here? I'm going to buy a new laptop because the one I've had for almost 4 years now is at its limit so I figure its about that time to upgrade. The only thing is that since laptops are a good chunk of change I don't want to feel like I wasted money later on.

I don't really need a gaming related laptop because I won't be playing any high end PC games at all. I'll be sticking to 2 fighting games mostly and maybe some indie games off steam. I won't be playing Assassin's creed and Skyrim or anything like that. Just some light gaming every once and a while. I'll mostly be using it for web surfing and video watching and thats about it. As it stands right now I have no clue what to look for. My friend had suggested this one

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834216684

My only problem with that is that its refurbished and I don't know if I really trust refurbished things. I don't need it crapping out on me 2 months later. How is Newegg for refurbished things like laptops?

I was also suggested this one

But I haven't heard too many good things about Windows 8. I know this is lot to ask for but can somebody help me out here,I'm lost on this stuff. Also my price range is between $500 to $600.

The first laptop is abject garbage, and going refurb is never a good idea, because it's used and the warranty is so short. The second machine seems like it's exactly what you'd need. Go with that one.

As far as Windows 8, it's a great OS, if you install Start8.

-Country where it will be purchased: United States
-Maximum budget: I'd be willing to go up to 1300 if there's a substantial difference but the closer to 1k the better.
-Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight): Doesn't matter too much to me. I've been looking at 15 or 17 inch laptops.
-Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all): Would mostly be used for gaming and streaming netflix/internet usage. I'm mostly playing League of Legends and just picked up Starcraft 2 today. I pledged for Star Citizen but haven't had a chance to play yet because of the lack of internet here so I'm looking for something that can play that, doesn't have to be max settings or anything like that though. Just looking for a solid gaming laptop that can play new games without chugging. A plus would be a blu ray player if possible but i'm willing to overlook a laptop that doesn't have one. Could I buy an external blu ray drive for a laptop and if so how much would one cost me?

I'm eyeing two right now and leaning towards the lenovo laptop.

None of em have a blu ray player. Any suggestions? At the moment i'm planning on ordering the Lenovo by the end of the day most likely.

That Lenovo is showing at $1,477.88, which is way too much to pay for that machine, when there is one for $999.99 shipped.

External Blu-ray? Sure, why not.

EDIT: SLI 750Ms give nearly the same performance as the GTX 770M. I'd rather have the single fast card, just to avoid the hassles.

Weird that the price is so high now. I ended up ordering that one shortly after that post since the page was showing only like 10 of them left and ended up only paying 998. The seller was Amazon.com LLC though and not Frugal Buys LLC. ONly reason I asked about the blu ray player is when I go home for the holidays I plan on picking up most of my blu rays i've bought and don't plan on buying a tv for the dorms i'll be staying in. Would be much easier to just watch em on my laptop. Didn't know it was just a usb connection.

Just find out whether the extenal drive requires you to buy Blu-ray software, or if it comes with some.

So, I need to buy a new laptop. My restriction is that it must be from USA Best Buy- I want to finance it, and I already have the account from them to do it interest free for 18 months. I want to make sure it can run Diablo, Starcraft, and Dota at reasonable rates, and I want to play The Witcher 1 and 2 at some point on them. The 2 machines I was looking at were an Acer Aspire for 750ish,and a Asus for about 1000,. Is the Asus worth the extra 250? Or are both of these computers crap?

Maximum budget: $500ish
Max size: Light, under 5lbs preferable. Screen size doesn't matter as it will be hooked to a monitor via KVM switch.
Planned usage: Gaming. Looking to game at the mid to low range. Settings on low/med ok. More concerned with framerates than pretty picture. Want to play WoW, Civ V, TW Rome II, etc. Maybe some older FPS.
Whatever else you find relevant: Going to hook this up to a KVM switch so the laptop itself will be closed. NEED 3 USB ports (2 for KVM and one for an iphone tether) and preferably a VGA port for the monitor on the KVM switch.

Edit: This Dell 15R may fit the bill at $549. Touchscreen, but that doesn't matter.

Or this Dell 15z for $499.

The 15r has a 4th gen i5 4400 and the 15z has a 3rd gen 4000 but does have an SSD.

and now this HP Pavilion looks good to at $339 even though it's pretty big.
What does GAF think?
