People still say to avoid SSDs which use Sandforce drivers.

I heard a lot of good reviews on Intel driver before i got it & now personally am using the Intel 520 driver without any hardware or performance issues till date. Since 520 is of sf based should i avoid it??? :D , You may have read a lot about SandForce Controller issues, but that is a thing of past. The way to check it is with the sequential benchmarks for the SSD to it's maximum with programs that issue I/O operations at a much faster rate than an application can

AMD CPUs aren't bad, when they're paired with low and mid range GPUs.

The only time I say flat out avoid them, is in the MSI gaming laptops.

Sorry if it's been asked, I can't find an answer via Google either, but when can we expect Iris Pro graphics in tablets?

Most likely never. Yes, this makes no sense, as it seems like the ultrabook and tablet markets would've been what Iris Pro was built for, but it takes up a lot of die space.

I'm pretty happy with my cheap Lenovo G505s with an AMD CPU and GPU. It was $500 and plays everything I throw at it, so I can't complain if you want to go budget based.

It that case. But he's looking for a high-end laptop so intel CPUs would be better.

Country: Canada
Budget: $700
Max Size: 17"
Planned Usage: Dota 2, CSGO, Guild Wars 2,
school.
Medium to low settings on the games above, low on more recent games.
I feel like this might be what i'm looking for but i'm not quite sure it is.

Hi GAF I know you guys recommend a Lenovo IdeaPad Y410p Laptop Computer - 59369925

I will need a computer that supports all these requirements:

MINIMUM RECOMMENDED HARDWARE

"Intel I7 processor with chipset that must support Intel Virtualization Technology
8 GB of ram (16 GB preferred)
Bios must support Virtualization
500 GB hard drive
CDRW/DVDRW combo drive
10/100 Auto Sensing Network Card
10/100 A/G/N Standard card (one of these standards will suffice)
Discrete Video Chipset 256 MB or Shared 512 MB
One USB 3.0 port (two preferred)"

Do you think this laptop will suffice?

I don't think I really need the cd drive however.

also, please answer asap.. I need this thing shipped out quickly as possible.

I honestly don't even know if the 8450G will be sufficient for your needs. I mean, there's playing things on Low, then there's playing things on Low. I'd ike to recommend that you stretch your budget to $799, for this.

Do you need VT-d? The 4700MQ does not support that feature.

Maximum budget: $500 or less
Max size: Would prefer the screen to be 1900/1080p, but this is not a necessity. Needs to be large enough to include a number pad atleast.
Planned usage: Mostly for college work, but the most hardcore thing I'm going to have it do is play 1080p movies, so if it can do that well, I'm happy.
Misc.: A healthy battery life. My old laptop from before only lasted 4 hours, despite being somewhat new. Also, a light up keyboard is supremely convenient.

Before I went to college, I wanted something that would play games. Then I realized I would have a life outside playing games, and only played 3 games this entire semester, one on the 360, the other on the PS3. I don't need a gaming laptop, just something to help me work and watch shit on. That shouldn't be too expensive, right?

Is there a laptop equivalent of the Nexus 5? Like a good screen, nice if not high end build quality, and good performance for a lower price than much of the competition? I'm going crazy trying to find a new laptop. Everything has either horrible build quality, dismal battery life, a terrible display, or all of the above unless I just spend a ton on a Mac.

Man I wish lower end Thinkpads would drop those 2005 displays...

Ideapads and the Samsung laptops might fit what you want.

I'm currently in school for a virtualization program, and picked up an ASUS N550JV-DB72T and am in love with it. The i7-4700HQ supports VT-D like you're looking for. I got a 500 gig SSD, and my god this thing screams. I can go from pushing the power button to having Win 8.1 up and 3 Windows Server 2012 VM's running in roughly 20 seconds or so. The video card is decent, and runs fairly well for a non-gaming laptop. I can run Skyrim and WoW at pretty good framerates. I highly recommend checking one out. If you aren't comfortable doing your own upgrading, there's a shop on Amazon called Computer Upgrade King that offers a variety of pre-upgraded systems to choose from.

So I was looking at this laptop at a store last night http://www.bestbuy.com/site/15-6-touch-screen-laptop-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive/8937158.p?id=1218954926513&skuId=8937158&st=pcmcat287600050003_categoryid$abcat0502000&cp=1&lp=1, and really like how it felt. Will it be able to run Bioshock Infinate, and at what quality? mynotebookcheck says it should run at high with a 745M, but I want to double check

I was looking for an answer along these lines, thankyou. Hope something similar comes along for tablets at some point (even if it would require active cooling)

I know BI runs with high settings at 30+ fps with no hiccups on a 650m, I'm guessing that videocard gets similar frames (maybe slightly better/worse?)

So I asked this question in the "I need a PC thread" but I guess it's more relevant here. My old M14x is about to break and I don't want to spend any more money on it, I have a desktop as my main gaming rig so this purchase is for uni work and travel.

Is razer blade (14 inch) worth getting over the Alienware 14? Blade costs the same, is lighter, slightly better spec-ed and has better battery life but since it's not available in EU I get no warranty at all. Alienware has a much better screen and possibly better build quality and probably runs somewhat cooler...and yea next day service warranty. So pretty much the only deciding factor is should I got for no warranty or not? Also Blade will have a smaller HDD and no optical drive (this is a pain) at all.

Or should I just fix my M14x and get a tablet? I have to get a new battery for my M14x and an new screen with a casing (ie. the thing that houses the displays and has hinges). It's also running insanely hot right now.

Never, ever, spend this kind of money when there won't be any warranty. Out of pocket costs for expenses plus shipping? Yeah no way.

Go with the Alienware 14, which can be upgraded a la carte to match all of the Razer's specs. The screen on the Razer 14 is as bad as they say, trust me. You'll get annoyed by how shallow the viewing angles are.

whats a good gaming laptop which i can play witcher 2 or fallout 3 without no lag and make it look pretty for $2000

Read the thread title.

Just ordered an Acer Aspire E1-432. I'm not going to be gaming on it very much so I'm not interested in raising my budget.

That said, would I be able to make decent gaming use of it at all? Say I tried to run Dark Souls or Lost Planet at low settings, could I get a decent framerate?

I guess I'll have to get rid of that OS, too. Which is better, Windows 7 or 8.1?

So, I bought a Y510P, which came with a TB hdd and a very small SSD.. Like 24GB.. I don't understand the purpose of the SSD. I thought that it might be a boot drive, but Windows is installed on the hdd.

Can anyone shine some light on this for me?

Hiya again, just a real quick question. What are thoughts regarding mSATA SSDs versus regular SSDs, in terms of reliability, lifespan, and all of that other fun stuff? Are mSATA drives fairly comparable to regular ones, or are there issues to consider or anything? Also, is there anything special that I'll need to get to connect the drive to mSATA, or does it just plug right into whatever's there?

Laptop GAF, I need help. I'm getting a laptop, and I'm looking at a Dell New Inspiron M531R, which I can get for $500 bucks. Will it be capable of running most games? Which games won't it be able to run? I'm not really concerned about maxing out graphics and such - as long as they function, I'm perfectly happy.

My alternative is a Dell Inspiron 15, which I can get $200 cheaper.

Hey guys looking to get a new laptop.
Country where it will be purchased: USA
Maximum budget: $1000(if absolutely necessary) I would like to keep it around or under $800 if possible
Max size: Max I would like would be 14.x"
Planned usage Finishing up school need something that is easily portable and usable in class. I have a 27" monitor that I would hook it into as well as a usb hub for a little docking station when at home. I would like to be able to do some gaming with it though doesn't have to be amazing as I do most of my gaming on consoles. I would like to play Titanfall(When it comes out) if that would even be possible with something like this? I could also always spend less on the laptop and build a desktop I guess(As I already have all the peripherals like speakers, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.), but I would like to have one that can do it all if it is possible.

A couple other necessities:
I would like something with a nice battery life, Something I don't have to worry about overheating would be nice too.

Let me know what you guys think thanks for any advice/help.

Prepare for the worst, as far as gaming.
Nice thread. Any recomendations for people in Europe (norway).

Those bang for the buck laptops look atractive.

You'll need to link some online computer retailers from Norway.

You either have an mSATA slot, or you don't, and connection is that easy.

What kind of performance can one expect out of a SLI

The Sager NP7330 from the OP is perfect for your needs. Problem is, it starts at $999 with a dual core and no OS. The quad core is $75 and OS another $80, which brings the total to $1175.

Anyone know a good laptop for around $300-350 that's used for web browsing/hd video playback?

It needs to be Windows 7/8.
Search Newegg or Amazon in your price range, and pick the highest rated one. That's what I'd do.

Nifty. Thanks again, as always.

Running off this 5400RPM drive is killing me when I've been so used to a SSD boot drive with a 7200RPM secondary drive.
I'm probably going to stuck a 120GB mSATA SSD in for the boot drive, and then two 750GB 7200RPM drives into the regular drive slots.

I'm looking for a decent laptop under 600. I don't want to play next or current gen games, but, mainly MMOs and older vidya games or games that aren't graphically demanding. I don't wanna shell out 1k for a laptop that would be inferior to consoles. Like I said I don't want anything amazing.

The Asus is a better looker, cheaper and has better battery life. But the Lenovo has the hybrid drive (I'll probably replace it anyway with a proper SSD in either) and a slightly better graphics card in the 755 along with double the memory and the change to go SLI in the future if they ever choose to sell the 755 ultrabay. I'm leaning the Lenovo

Well done K Jack thanks that seems exactly what I'm looking for and seems to be a pretty decent price for the specs. Would there be any concern with overheating on this? Should I consider either of the heating upgrades to help with cooling? Any of their other options worth it to upgrade it at all? (ie the overclocking etc.) Also what would you think the battery life on that be?

Thanks guys

How about this: http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-17-3737/pd?oc=dncwd226h&model_id=inspiron-17-3737

It's got a 4th Generation Intel Core i5-4200U processor (3M Cache, 1.6 GHz), an Intel® HD Graphics 4400 video card, and 6GB Dual Channel DDR3L of memory for $600.

Alternatively, I could get that laptop with 3rd Generation Intel Core i3-3227U processor, an AMD Radeon™ HD 8650M 2GB GDDR5 video card, and 4 GB of single-channel DDR3L memory for $550.

Out of those two, which should I get? And keep in mind, I'm not really looking to run Battlefield 2 or Crysis 3 on it.

Definitely take the Inspiron 17.

It blows my mind that this even exists at such a price. I'm not saying it's an incredibly powerful GPU, but it's way better than the integrated graphics you get stuck with, in the $500 price range.

So, the Inspiron 17 is pretty decent? I mean im not looking for a top of the line, 1k+ (i can build a PC that's better), but, so long as I can play MMOs and game older games 'm happy.

The one linked there is the best bang for $500. That's all I can promise, without you saying exactly what games you play.

Oh, nothing demanding. If it's recent, it'll be RTS games and MMOs. Games like Eve or WoW/FFXI, or DOTA or even Starcraft. I mostly just want to be able to play MMOs or old PC games.

Country where it will be purchased: USA

Maximum budget: $900-1000

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight): At least 15 inch screen

Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all).
Ideally you'll point out what resolution and settings are your standard, based off of what I've laid out in the OP: Titanfall, Skyrim, LoL...all of them on at least medium-high settings

Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc: battery life isn't a concern and neither is fan noise

I'm leaning heavily towards getting a Y510P SLI based on what I've read here and elsewhere however I am open to other suggestions. It's currently selling for $950 on newegg but I believe I've seen it for cheaper on Amazon. Does it regularly go on sale below $900? If so I wouldn't mind waiting.

There's nothing in your range that's stronger than SLI 750Ms, so take the Y510p. It never goes below $900.

Out of curiosity, what would you say is the most high-end game it could run at minimum settings?

Scroll down to the gaming benchmarks. The 8650M will actually be faster because the 8670M tested only had DDR3, where this card has GDDR5.

@K.Jack - when you say "average at best keyboard" for Clevo laptops, what exactly do you mean? Like, do the keys on the keyboard break quickly?

A friend of mine is aiming to buy a new laptop, here are the details he provided.

Main uses:
He mainly wants to use it to play League of Legends
He wants one that can run photoshop without any hassles/slowdowns
He has Wacom Bamboo Trace Pad since he likes to draw
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002OOWC3S/?tag=neogaf0e-20
and would like one that won't have problems running with it attached
Price: Something cheap within the $500 or whereabouts

So basically something simple yet competent.

Bought my laptop almost one year ago to the day thanks to recommendations in this thread and have been pleased with it so far. Paid a little over £400 for the following which I think was a good deal at the time:

i3 3100M @ 2.4 GHz
6GB memory
GeForce GT 630M 1GB

When I first got it I used to play games (a LOT of Dark Souls and a little Arkham City - usually @ 720p) without any problems but it does always run pretty hot whenever I play anything that uses the GPU. Over time the fans have started to get a lot nosier - as if the insides have maybe warped a little? I just get this vibrating noise quite often that wasn't there when I first bought it.

Just tried to play a little Dark Souls tonight and I'm repeatedly getting kicked out as "the framerate is insufficient for online play". Nothing out of the ordinary happening - just the game slowing to a crawl frequently. Took a snapshot of my temps straight after this happened so anyone can tell me if these look particularly high?

Just wondering if this is something I should be worried about and if I should raise it with the people I bought it from as I only have 4 days left on the one year warranty? Or if I should consider extending the warranty while I have the chance if I'm sitting on a ticking time bomb? I'm clueless about all this so any advice would be appreciated!

I need a new notebook and leaning towards a Lenovo IdeaPad Y410p. They are on sale but am unsure which model to get. Both have the same specs except a few differences:

$769.00 vs. $799.00
1TB 5400 RPM vs. 1TB 5400 RPM+24GB SSD
Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230 vs. Intel Wireless-N 7260
6 Cell 72 Watt Hour Lithium-Ion vs. 6 Cell 62 Watt Hour Lithium-Ion

Are those differences worth the extra $30? Or should I get the slightly cheaper model and apply the savings towards a larger SSD than the 24GB?

Bought my laptop almost one year ago to the day thanks to recommendations in this thread and have been pleased with it so far. Paid a little over £400 for the following which I think was a good deal at the time:

i3 3100M @ 2.4 GHz
6GB memory
GeForce GT 630M 1GB

From what I have heard, 90 degrees celsius is the throtteling point for most chips so those temps aren't terrible for your laptop I guess. You might also want to clean the vents on your laptop with a small air blower to get rid of the dust that has probably collected over time in them. That could why you are getting high temps but it also could be just normal aging of the components inside it which no laptop can avoid.
