I need a new 15" Laptop, but not necessarily a gaming Laptop. It should run some indie games, but that's about it, when it comes to gaming. I need it mainly for the college, since I'm studying computer science. I want to spend up to 600€, but it would be great, if it could stay under that, if it's possible. A very important thing is, that it needs to be as quite as possible, because I'll carry it to classes etc. I also want a Windows OS, preferably Windows 7. Help is appreciated.

What is the best ultra book of the bunch that just came out? Should I listen to the wire cutter? They haven't really kept their ultra book section up to date

So, I need to buy a new laptop. My restriction is that it must be from USA Best Buy- I want to finance it, and I already have the account from them to do it interest free for 18 months. I want to make sure it can run Diablo, Starcraft, and Dota at reasonable rates, and I want to play The Witcher 1 and 2 at some point on them. The 2 machines I was looking at were an Acer Aspire for 750ish,and a Asus for about 1000,. Is the Asus worth the extra 250? Or are both of these computers crap?

Can you afford this? You didn't give a budget so I'm going to recommend random laptops. It's definitely worth $250 more than the $1k laptop you posted.

Country where it will be purchased: USA
Maximum budget: $500ish
Max size: Light, under 5lbs preferable. Screen size doesn't matter as it will be hooked to a monitor via KVM switch.
Planned usage: Gaming. Looking to game at the mid to low range. Settings on low/med ok. More concerned with framerates than pretty picture. Want to play WoW, Civ V, TW Rome II, etc. Maybe some older FPS.
Whatever else you find relevant: Going to hook this up to a KVM switch so the laptop itself will be closed. NEED 3 USB ports (2 for KVM and one for an iphone tether) and preferably a VGA port for the monitor on the KVM switch.

Edit: This Dell 15R may fit the bill at $549. Touchscreen, but that doesn't matter.

Or this Dell 15z for $499.

The 15r has a 4th gen i5 4400 and the 15z has a 3rd gen 4000 but does have an SSD.

and now this HP Pavilion looks good to at $339 even though it's pretty big.
What does GAF think?

I don't see the HD 4400 running Rome II well at all. This is the most powerful laptop in your budget, by far.

Link me to a computer website of your country.

I haven't really studied the Haswell ultrabooks, to be honest.

Didn't know about this thread! Great thread!

Hey KJack, how's the Toshiba Qosmio x75? Thinking about getting that for the i74500mq + GTX770m.

Wish it was a 780m but as long as the 770m can play titles like Skyrim, Witcher 2, Starvraft 2 on ultra with good fps, I'll be cool with that.

Will a lower res make that possible? I don't need full antialiasing or 1080p for ultra settings for those games, maybe other than SC2.

Thanks! :)

I think you should buy the MSI GT70 2OC instead, then spend the price difference on an SSD.

The GTX 770M can 1080p + Ultra all of the games you listed.

Thank you so much. That Lenovo looks perfect in every way except this review kind of pans it for even low level gaming.

They recommend the Acer Aspire E1-571G instead which looks to be in the same price range. It doesn't have a VGA, but I guess I can do a KVM switch with HDMI?

What do think between these 2?

Not the same Lenovo G505. The one in the review has a CPU of the dual core A6-5350M and 8450G + 8570M graphics combo. The one I linked has the quad core A10-5750M and 8650G for graphics. The 8650G is faster than the 8570M; it's also much faster than the GT 620M of the Acer.

I don't really know, where to look at, but some friends recommended me this for example: http://www.cyberport.de/

I think it doesn't really matter, if the website is in my country, since, they are basically copying the price anyways. Like a 500$ Laptop in the US is 500€ here anyways.
Damn you guys are getting waaaay better value at the $500-$600 pricepoint than we are right now. So many good choices, almost too many.

How about this Dell Inspiron 15R, right at 599€. Great build quality there, with the nice aluminum instead of plastic. Then here's an Acer for 50€ less, and it has a faster GPU as well. Finally, there's this Acer for 499€, which has the same specs as the Dell Inspiron.

Sounds good.

MSI is nice but I'm worried about fan issues. Hearing lots of bad things about it. Same with the Qosmio.

What laptop would you recommend with a good cooling system with a 770m or a 780m?

Thanks.

How good is the Core i5 3230M in this?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231238

Would I be better just finding something with a newer processor even if it has 750M instead of a 660M?

edit: fuck me, out of stock in the time it took me to take a lecture.

You're better off not having a GTX 660M that's bottlenecked by a dual core, anyway. If you need further help, create a post following the format in the OP.

Can't afford the Dragon but maybe the lighter model with a 780m. Worried about the single fan and throttling issues I'm reading about. Are those reports false from people who just over killed on the system and is the laptop actually good with temp problems?

Do you think the Asus g750jh is good? I'm getting sold on the cooling system. Thinking about getting it. I never thought about a Asus and the laptop looks kind of clunky. I'm also reading about monitor issues like horizontal lines. Is Asus generally a good brand that is durable? Hoping to last at least 3-4 years.

Although for a similar or cheaper price I'm also thinking of a desktop with a gtx 760. Is that a high end card? How does it compare to the 780m in terms of power and performance?

I want portability but if I can let that go and get a great desktop that equal to a 780m for cheaper, it might be a fair trade off.

Awesome. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. I'll probably go with the 549€ Acer. Mainly, because it has a larger HDD and a better battery-lifetime. Hopefully, this is the right choice. :D

Friend of a friend is looking to buy a gaming laptop. Nothing extreme, but still capable. Budget is $600-$700. Looking at this one atm, but if anyone's got any other suggestions let me know. Also, this is in the US, and the friend of a friend didn't specify screen size.

EDIT: friend of a friend decided to delineate his budget a bit more.

Well, there's a thread full of people here, who on't have cooling issues. Check it out. My temps never go beyond the 80s, and I don't even use the turbo fan. I can't explain the issues which have been reported.

Because of their issues with the screens their shipping with, I've had serious reservations about the Asus G750. Buy at your own risk.

The GTX 780M is a full desktop GTX 680, running at lower clocks. You'll always get a tremendously larger amount of value from building a desktop with the amount of money the laptop would cost. There's no comparison. That's why I began the OP with explaining why gaming laptops may not be for everyone's needs. Did you read that?

On my previous post, how would the gtx 760 rank compared to the 780m?

Specs.

GTX 780M - 1536 Shaders, 771Mhz/1250MHz, 256-bit 4GB GDDR5

GTX 760 - 1152 Shaders, 1006MHz/1502MHz, 256-bit 2GB GDDR5

GTX 770 - 1536 Shaers, 1058MHz/1752MHz, 256-bit 2GB GDDR5

So, uh, the speed wise the 780M should be in between the GTX 760 an GTX 770.

Just want to give my own opinion...if you are purchasing a new notebook above $750 you should upgrade the drive to an ssd. It is a relatively easy upgrade, a clean install of windows is never a bad thing, and most of all the prices of ssds are coming down (got a 512 gb for $250).

It isn't going to let you game at a higher resolution or give you more fps, but everything is faster. Even split seconds add up over time. That way you have more time to game.

Plus there is the benefit of battery life as well.

Just got the Lenovo 505G recommended by K.jack. Good so far for the price point of $529. Only run WoW on it, but getting 25-30 regular FPS at high settings and about 10 in raids but this may also be because I'm tethering the laptop to my iphone.

god damn ultrabook

Read some reviews. That's all I have on ultrabooks.

Is there a general laptop thread, i.e non gaming? Or is it ok to ask questions in here about certain CPUs.
You can ask questions about mobile CPUs.

I don't disagree. Once you've have an SSD, going back to mechanical drives is impossible.

I ended up buying an Asus Q501LA non-refurb from Best Buy for $650. I wouldn't mind swapping the hd to an SSD, probably a 128 - 256gb drive. I probably just need a normal 2.5" drive with SATA 3 right?

Also are there any SSDs that should be avoided, or ones that are preferable? When I was building my PC there were certain models that were recommended you didn't buy because of failure rates or something. That was 6 months ago so I don't know if that's true anymore.

Ok so I'm not generally very proficient in some of this PC stuff but i'm just a little curious about something; the gtx 770m has similar performance (gigaflops and memory clock wise) to the xbox one but which one is theoretically stronger? And if the 770m is stronger is it because of raw compute power? Also, does having intel cpus help pcs gain a little extra power over the consoles?

I have a question. My laptop has full 1080p resolution. But when I turn down the resolution of certain games, I get black borders around it. It does not adjust to the whole screen. It doesnt happen with every game, but with several. Any idea why?

People still say to avoid SSDs which use Sandforce drivers.

Theoretically? Well the 770M can play Battlefield 4 at 1080p with High settings. So right now the win is in the 770M's corner. But does that mean the 770M will be running PS4 ports better than the Xbox, say five years fro now?

Of course the CPU helps, but games are mostly GPU bound at high resolutions.

Those are usually issues of scaling. Does it only happen in games that are much older?

The Nvidia Control Panel used to have scaling options in the Display settings. Mine doesn't, and I'm not sure why. You should check there though. You'd need to set it to Full Screen. If the options aren't there, try connecting to an external monitor, to see if that makes them appear.

Pardon my ignorance, but here is my problem:
my laptop is nearly 4 years old at this point, but it's still pretty good for occasional gaming. I didn't use it in the past 5 weeks though and when I launched Tomb Raider on it earlier today my laptop started to overheat and shut down. I've never had this problem before. I disassembled the laptop, wiped off the dust (which there wasn't much of), reassembled and the overheating didn't go away. I did some stress tests and the CPU one shut down my laptop within a minute, the GPU stress test (FurMark) took nearly 30 minutes to overload my machine (and both CPU and GPU got to insanely high temps in that test). As it turns out, I already have a thermal compound (Arctic Silver 5) at home, but it seems to be designed for CPU. I have no idea if I can also slap it on the GPU?

It would be really cool if just changing the thermal paste solved the problem.

It's this one except I swapped its obnoxiously slow HDD for an SSD. It's 4 years old at this point, but it's doing its job nicely. I rarely play games on it since I have a desktop PC, but it handles ports of PS360 games quite well.

Cool. The Mobility 5650 is/was very respectable mid-range card from its time.

If you haven't changed the thermal paste in 4 years, that's definitely the problem imo.

Thanks, I hope it works, it should be a quick fix. BTW the power jack died in the laptop earlier this year and it was the first time in my life I was desoldering stuff lol. It cost me $3 to fix it and it was a lot of fun actually, I was amazed when I plugged it in and it was working again :p I almost wish things were breaking more often lol.

OK, I changed the thermal paste. It no longer shuts down under load, but the measurements are still absurdly high compared compared to my desktop, which I guess is how it was designed to work (I never measured temps until yesterday, it was just working).

What are the temps? It's normal for mobile GPU/CPU temps to be in the 80s, but 90s would be too high.

84C when playing Tomb Raider, it flatlined at 96C when running FurMark with postprocessing. Insanely high but I'll let it be - it seems games aren't as taxing as the stress test programs.

84C is completely normal, and within safe parameters. Tests like Furmark and OCCT will push temps higher than any normal usage, and really shouldn't be used.

I'm looking for a laptop with these vague specifications.

UK
Around £700 to £900
Any size really
Games to be played on it would include Skyrim, Saints Row IV and Civilization V

Also, what would be the best places to buy a laptop from in the UK? Most webstores I've checked have a limited selection and the few laptops available have Hd 4000s.

PCSpecialist. Scroll down to either size of the Optimus V. Add the i7-4700MQ under CPU, 8GB of RAM, then select a storage option under Memory - Hard Disk.

OK, OK, OK, I've held out mainly because of work and other stuff taking up most of the savings I had for a new laptop, but I've decided, come January and that nothing gets in the way, to get this laptop:
http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_ROG_G750JX/#overview
Wonder what the ROG is for though? The shop I'm getting it from doesn't list ROG in its laptop listings for asus @_@

Just a reminder of the stuff I want my laptop to play:
Country where it will be purchased: Middle East
Maximum budget: $750-1000
Max size: 16-17"

Planned usage:
a) For the laptop's convenience, I plan on gaming at a maximum of 720p, if I can find within my price range that it can run games fine at 1080p and 60 FPS, then the better.
b) Battery life is tricky, for the long run I expect to play on my laptop for maybe say 3-5 hours, I don't like keeping my laptop charging all the time and may want to turn off the electricity if I'm not using it for gaming.
c) Aside from the usual PC games I would also like it to run emulators well, I could list what emulators I want if that's OK?
d) Low fan noise and if possible one that doesn't overheat a lot.

I've been looking for a cheaper alternative as much as possible but non of the recommended laptop in this thread seem to be available in my country @_@.

Hello! Yeah, searching for laptops in our locations is a pain, frankly I didn't buy mine until I visited every store, that seems to be one of the few reliable ways to find what you want.

It stands for Republic of Gaming, a branding for their laptops targeted for gamers. And if you're getting that for a $100 thousand that seems to be a great deal.

I took a look at those alienware laptops and frankly they're way, way over priced, not to mention that some of them are used, which is a big no-no regarding laptops IMO.
Also, isn't the price of the G750JX you mentioned above well above $1000? More close to $1800, which is too much for its specs.
suggest you look into MSI laptops if you can find any, last time I went they laptop hunting I found them to be fairly priced.

As a tip don't pick up anything that doesn't have at least a Nividia GTX 765M, 770M or even better a 780M. 8GB of ram should be the minimum. As for CPU an Intel Core i7 4700MQ or higher would be great. You might have to go to the device manager or ask a store associate to check these things, though. Out stores love to be vague regarding specs, only mentioning stuff like 2GB Vram or Intel i7.

Unless it's the Radeon HD 8970M I suggest you avoid AMD GPUs, as the portable version of the R9 are still unavailable.
And never ever touch an AMD CPU.
