The Raid not being in the top 5? No The Raid 2 or John Wick 2? What kind of list is this?

Great choices for top 2 though, though I'd swap them.

At least it's better than that other action movie list that put the Miami Vice remake at #1 LMAO

lol almost forgot about that.

Whoa, Vern is still writing? Always appreciated his reviews of action movies, this guy actually has serious action film review cred from back in the late 90s.

But yeah, I'm not loving this list. Haywire is god awful, Drug War is lukewarm, The Grandmaster is a solid art drama but seriously out of place in an action movie list, I Saw the Devil is just a fucked up horror movie and, again, I don't think it really fits the theme of the list. I love Hero and Crouching Tiger to death, but I can't classify them as straight-up action films...they are arty dramas with incredible action. This list is specifically straight-up great action movies, not stuff that just happens to have some action in it, right? Also, leaving out TONS of much better action stuff. Vern, I dunno, man...

Here's my personal list of the greatest, straight-up ass-kicking movies of the past 17 years, in release order:

Versus
Time and Tide
Ong Bak
Azumi
Exiled
SPL
The City of Violence
The Rebel
Flying Swords of Dragon Gate
The Raid
Dredd
Kingsman: The Secret Service
John Wick
Mad Max: Fury Road

To be fair, I haven't seen a few things on the list, like the Universal Soldier sequels or the Undisputed movies, which I know have a great rep. Also haven't seen The Raid 2 or John Wick 2 yet.

And why would I want them?
Universal Soldier: Regeneration apparently is more ass kicking than The Raid? lol seriously?

Has anyone seen that shit? It's fucking #3 on this list. I might need to check it out, but I don't recall anyone around here ever talking about it.

They're not better than either raid movie but yeah they're entertaining action movies made in the spirit of 80s/90s action genre.

Same here. I've watched it 3 times to try to 'get it' but I guess it's just one of those movies that doesn't resonate with me. It's beautifully shot for sure but that's about as far as my admiration for it goes.

Mad Max is definitely more of a movie made for film buffs than anything else. It's a marvel in film technicality. Aside from that, I'm in the same boat with a lot of you guys.

On topic, The Raid should be number 1 and it's not even close imo. The Raid 2 should also be in top 10.

I mean, I certainly wouldn't put it at #3 on my own list of best action movies of the century.

It would be #1.

Nice to see a fellow Kitamura fan.

This is one of the worst action film lists I've seen in a while.

Where the fuck is Die Hard, Hard Boiled (or even A Better Tomorrow/Better Tomorrow 2, The Killer) or Dredd ? Where the fuck is Jackie Chan or Sammo Hung ? Where the fuck is Jim Cameron ?

Fuck outta here

"THIS CENTURY" i.e. post 2000

I respect this list for acknowledging the relentless ass-kicking mastery of Fast & Furious 6.

That said, The Raid 2 is better than any movie on this list.

Can't take this joke of a list seriously since Die Hard is not even mentioned.
Edit: oh starting from year 2000... Then i don't feel strongly one way or the other.

i'm not sure Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a "Straight-up Ass-Kicking Action Movie." It is a really cool movie, though.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is confirmed straight up ass-kicking martial arts action movie.

Glad you put it so high up that list OP, it deserves that easily in my opinion. I think it has never really been given credit for it's true standing in martial arts action genre. I put it up there with Fist of Legend, Drunken Master II, and Iron Monkey

I 100% agree with Fury Road being at the top of this list.
Was a good choice for #1

i've been begging for over 5 years.
It's the great action movie of all time. What is there not to get?

Do you watch action movies?

Well that's certainly an opinion. It's an opinion that isn't the same as my own. Since you 'get it' why not explain to me why you have that opinion?

My opinion is that John Wick is the top action movie on that list. I think it is because the entire movie is wall to wall 'Ass-Kicking' action as the title of this thread and list describe. There wasn't a 'down' moment in the entire film. I can't say the same about Fury Road. There were plenty of beautifully shot breaks in the 'action'.

But instead of explaining your opinion you chose to question if I even watch the genre. What a great way to defend your best action movie choice.

I don't mind the list but I haven't seen every film on it so I can't really say if the rankings are good or not.
Kill Bill and Furious 6 are garbage as action movies and don't belong on any list.
Uh no. They're fantastic action movies, especially Furious 6. It's by far the best of the F&F franchise for action. The subway fight and Airplane scenes specifically.
