Crouching Tiger should be number 1.

Fury Road was straight up average for me.

A pretty crappy list, but then again action movies have been pretty bad. It also seems like the person who made the list threw in a few chinese movies to get some cred, Red Cliff shouldn't be anywhere near a list like this let alone number 11.

Biggest Omissions -

Pacific Rim
Real Steel

I watched Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning based on the recommendation of a film-centric website I enjoyed at the time.

Never in my life have I ever been so certain of falling for an undisclosed ad, or I dunno, maybe the reviewer's friend worked on the movie.

But jesus, that movie was a hunk of shit.

Edit:

*goes back through the thread to see what everyone else is saying about Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning*

Jesus Christ, really?

really?

You're gonna tout that high-quality YouTube fanfilm fight as a plus?

For you.
No Crank? Terrible list. Nice to see Chocolate there, but it makes it even weirder that Ong Bak isn't in the list either.

The Raid 1 and 2 and John Wick 1 and 2 should be tied together in their respective spots on this list.

They've got Tom Yum Goong/The Protector at number four, at least, and if they're only going to have one Tony Jaa movie that's the one to pick. At some point that movie just drops all pretense of plot and just becomes "watch Tony Jaa fight against every different style of martial arts" :p

Having said that, Tony Jaa doesn't light his legs on fire to kick a man to death in The Protector, so that's still a strong point in Ong Bak's favour.

I'm amazed and happy that Chocolate (2008) is on this list. It's an amazing movie. Fury Road as #1 is an obvious choice.

I can't front, that's a great list. Mine would look pretty dang similar.
13 Assassins absolutely deserves its place on there, as does Johnnie To's Drug War, and Killzone 2/SPL2 remains underseen and underloved for its sheer friggin operatic awesomeness. Even Death Sentence is a great dark horse pick.
I've got some quibbles, but not really that many, and any exclusions I'd recommend (like say, the anime film Redline) would be nearer the bottom of the list anyway.
Damn, Rent-a-Ryan Reynolds doing work.
I always thought Scott Adkins more resembled a muscled up Sasha Baron Cohen.

Also of important note...

this list is compiled by Vern, of www.outlawvern.com. No wonder its solid, he's got utterly fantastic taste in action movies. For his site he writes very well and smartly about movies that can sometimes be kinda stupid. Love that guy.

Hell, he wrote the definitive book on Steven Seagal's career, the I-can't-recommend-it-enough-tome Seagalogy.

"THIS CENTURY" i.e. post 2000

I know, you're the second person to tell me off in this thread :p

Nice to see Tom Yum Goong in there at least, surprised Ong Bak didn't make the cut. What the hell ever happened to Tony Jaa. He was so good in those two films and then his films completely died on their arse in quality.

Can someone explain the universal soldier thing to me? Is this some hipster thing?

One of them is a genuinely decent action film (not seen Day Of Reckoning) but if it's the one I'm thinking of it doesn't really get going/good until the latter part of the film.

The fact that the Raid 2 isn't on here, especially in the top 3 (Are you really fucking kidding me with #1?), invalidates the entire list.

#1 is a good, great movie, but "straight-up, ass-kicking"? When did that ever happen in the flick?

So I've been home sick today and I spent some time reading this site. And I gotta say, it's surprisingly insightful and even socially aware. Definitely a lot more going on there than tabulating punches and kicks.
