Foxx will Best Acto because of the role he played, regardless of his performance.

I think it is a rip that Kate wont win for Best Actress.

Ray Charles isn't winning anything. Unlike the Grammys, someone else will be receiving all the credit.

Guess this is going to be the official thread, so I'll cross post from my thread since there's very few hours left to join:

Awards shows are mostly behind the scenes affairs with lots of lobbying and bullshit politics determining what ultimately wins. What the viewer is left with is a husk of a show that is only entertaining to the most hardcore movie fans, such as myself. But there's a way I like to spice things up for everyone... so let me elaborate.

As I did last year, I'm getting a pool together to predict the winners of the 2005 Oscars. It's going to be done via the BLOCKBUSTER "PREDICT THE WINNERS" Contest. For those of you not familiar, what it does is simple.

Starting tommorow after the nominees are announced, a page will go up where you'll be able to create an account and place your predictions for each individual category. You can find out HOW TO PLAY here. I will be creating a GROUP that every person that chooses the participate in this GAF/TTB/PA pool can join. Via this group, we can compare predictions and receive rankings based on how well we perform on Oscar Night. You can change your predictions as much as you want up until 5:30 PM PST on February 27, 2005. Then the site will lock down all predictions can be monitored as they will be automatically updated whenever a winner is announced during the awards ceremony.

The incentive, besides bragging rights if you do really well within our group, is to win the GRAND PRIZE. The GRAND prize is a entertainment system, first prize is a hollywood-esque Diamond Hand ring, and final prize are 50 dollar Blockbuster gift certificates.

TO JOIN...

GO TO THE PREDICT THE WINNERS PAGE here. Once there, make an account. Then when you sign in, to join our pool you must enter in the following:

Join the Group named: Torch the GAFers
The password is: fourna201

Although this is true:

Eligibility: 2. Eligibility: Sweepstakes is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and Washington D.C., who are at least 18 years of age and who have an active e-mail account and Internet access as of the beginning of the Sweepstakes period.

You can still join up with a fake address if you don't live in the US. You won't be eligible for a prize, but the bragging rights are as open as ever :)

This is the perfect way to spice up the Academy Awards, imho. I've done this a few years now always to great success, and we've got a good bunch of people together. Here's the current member list:

Is it me or was Finding Neverland a really hokey bunch of crap?

It was well done and I enjoyed it when I saw it, but it was a fairly typical, if not generic, plot, regardless of whether it was based on a true story or not. I'm surprised it made the list honestly, as there were far better movies out there. The much neglected Eternal Sunshine being one.

As much as I'd like to see Aviator sweep, I think there's going to be a big upset with Million Dollar Baby taking the big awards. This is Hollywood after all.

It's not you. I hated that movie. Bland performances, insufferably cute kids, and loads of sentimental goo do not make for my kind of movie.

So far here's how my picks end up:

The Aviator - 6 Awards
Million Dollar Baby - 4 Awards
Sideways - 2 Awards
The Incredibles - 2 Awards

BUT WHICH ONES WILL THEY WIN!? HAW HAW HAW

It can't suck with Chris Rock hosting.

However it does suck that they made Robin Williams not do his musical number out of the fear of offending people.

I joined Amir0x's pool and made my picks. There were only a few that I went with my hopes rather than what I think will actually go down... C'mon, I'd be friggin' ecstatic if Thomas Haden Church snagged the Best Supporting award!

Morgan Freeman winning would just be another in a long series of instances where the Acadamy feels it necessary to make amends for past misjudgment. He probably should've won years ago, but with Million Dollar Baby, he's simply going through the motions (doing a very good job, no question) of a character he's played countless times before. It's usually this kind of role or the President with Freeman, isn't it? :)

All right, I signed up. I'm doing it all completely fucking blind, the only movie I've seen out of any of the nominees for anything is Lemony Snicket and other than that, I also saw 7:35 in the Morning.

Nothing could possibly top last year's incredible Best Original Song nominees. Two Alison Krauss numbers, A Mighty Wind, Triplets of Belleville. Only marred by Annie Lennox's shitty song for Return of the King. And guess which one won :(

I loved Return of the King, but the Triplets of Belleville got hosed in the song category. :(

I don't think Into the West was a terrible song, but you're right, every other song was better.

Plus Lennox's performance during the show was HIDEOS. She looked like a fucking zombie contorting all over the place while trying to speak. Ugh.

Even though I absolutely loved it, I just noticed that I've only got Million Dollar Baby up for one award, and a minor one at that. Not that it doesn't deserve more, but damn it, Marty's due to win big for once!

And here I was criticising the Oscars for making amends in an earlier post... :lol

I'm hoping someone torrents it just in the off chance that something good happens, as I'll be tuning out while Carnivale is on. I'm not waiting longer than necessary to see that.

But yeah, I doubt there will be any live feeds considering the TV rights... it's not like a government address or something that networks aren't making money off; someone's paying to film and air this.

Believe it or not, "Lorenzo the Cat" is actually a CG short. The textures and graphic style make it seem 2D... Amazing.

If you really want to pull for a 2D film to win Best Animated Short, you hope for Bill Plympton's "Guard Dog," the only one of the nominees (brilliant short too).

wow, well, even more reason for supporting Lorenzo. Not voting for a 2D, I just thought it was amazing. Plympton's good, but he's never really been my cup of tea though.

damn. Hillary Swank's nipples were ROCK hard.

heh, i had no idea Virginia Madsen was related to Michael Madsen. Now im glad i picked her, even though i've never seen Sideways.
