HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros announced today that the club has acquired left-handed pitcher Darren Oliver from the Florida Marlins in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Oliver will join the Astros tomorrow in Houston. A corresponding move to make room for Oliver on the 25-man roster will be announced following the club's game today at Arizona.
Oliver, 33, is 2-3 with a 6.44 ERA (42ER/58.2IP) in 18 games for Florida this season, including eight starts. In 297 career Major League appearances (226 starts) over 12 seasons from 1993-2004, Oliver is 86-79 with a 5.08 ERA (787ER/1393IP). He went 13-11 with a 5.04 ERA (101ER/180.1IP) in 33 games (32 starts) for the Colorado Rockies in 2003.
The Astros will be the sixth Major League team Oliver has pitched for, as the left-hander has also played for Texas (1993-98, 2000-01), St. Louis (1998-99), Boston (2002), Colorado (2003), and Florida (2004).
