Breaking down the playoff contenders. Despite much heartbreak in baseball the past week for me, it's still an amazing sport and Im excited to see these teams play. I'm just assuming these will be the 8 teams too
AL
Damn, the Angels have possibly the best set-up/closer combo in the major leagues now. Francisco Rodriguez is insane. As sick as any pitcher out there. Percival is great too and both have guys hitting in the .100's against them. I'd have to say they do have the best bullpen to end a game. Their whole team really seems to be filled with a great offense and clutch players also. I can imagine them being very hard to contain pitching wise, and if it gets to late innings and it's close, they'll also be very tough to beat.
Twins meanwhile, they're a tough team I'd say. Not nearly one of the elite but they do have Johan Santana. If he pitches like he has they can very well beat any team by winning a game or two outside of Santana's starts.
The Boston Red Sox. I have to cheer for these guys. If they stay focused I'd even say they should win this. Sure, we've seen the Yankees blow em out recently and then Red Sox return the favor a few times. Put those two together and nobody has a clue what the hell's gonna happen. But from a prediction standpoint, you have to think Pedro/Schilling's first outing together in the postseason, along with a fantastic offense, will bold well for em. I have no fear of Schilling stepping up big in the postseason, but Pedro's not as sure a thing. I hope he realizes what a great oppurtunity this is for them and brings his game to another level. Red Sox should really be primed for anything. They have all the pieces.
Stankees. The villains. I have nothing to say of these guys at all. Somebody slay the dragon, quick!
NL
The St. Louis Cardinals. My only concern with them is that they may not be able to turn on, at will, the ball they played when they were at their peak and still sprinting away in the central division. Winning something so early I think has its disadvantages. At the same time their lineup is deadly and team chemistry fantastic. They usually seem to know exactly what they need to win. This will be one hard ass team to beat.
Los Angeles Dodgers. They just may not have enough to run the gauntlet imo. They have a lot of strengths. Bullpen is great, a tough group of guys. The team knows how to compete. Steve Finley and Adrian Beltre are real playmakers too. The thing is, at the same time it's very easy to visualize this team being overmatched. Then again, considering most playoff games are low scoring and close, Gagne is a huge benefit for the Dodgers.
Then we got the Braves. I don't think this is at all the same team that loses every year in the playoffs after a full season of hard work. They play tough every inning, make timely hits, overachieve. They believe they can win. Again, with this team there is also a possibility of being overmatched but less so than the Dodgers. This team is just too good at capitalizing on other teams mistakes and are constantly making something happen. This is a very good team with the right mentality for winning.
Finally, the Giants. er, Astros. What can I say about them. They have probably the biggest fire in them that another team will have to put out. They remind me of the Cardinals back when they were extremely hot. Not only that but the starting pitching is better. Oswalt and Clemens will be making 4 starts combined in every series at least, except possibly the first not being able to set their rotation. They get on teams early, it seems like, all the time and can dominate teams. Right now I'd really fear them more than any other team in the first round for the NL. They've already achieved a lot getting to this point, their going to be an extremely tough team to break mentally
