Hail to the king, baby!

*bows to Raimi*

SM3 got the highest opening thanks to SM2 and blew it. What a shame.

That is depressing. SM 1 and 3 being on top, that is.

S-M2 set the table for S-M3. I don't think the hype to see a sequel to S-M1 was there, while putting Spider-man on screen for the first time it was obviously there. Then S-M2 easily ended up being the best in the series; an evolution of the first one, pretty much better in every way. So though it's opening numbers don't show it, I think it was the most important one in the franchise.

Anyway, ASM is cool, but you just can't do a remake this soon and go over similar stories. People don't want it. Especially with a greatly lesser score and not as specific of a feel. I do think there's slight carry over from S-M3 as well. The shittiness of that film really damaged the series.

Batman Begins did suffer from that though even with an extra two year cushion.

Absolutely it did. Thankfully Batman Begins was so different in tone, along with being really, really good. Also, it's origin hadn't been told in 16 years and it was told very different. Still affected the film. 3 years and a lot of word of mouth made TDK a success, along with the Joker/Heath Ledger stuff and terrific marketing.

If Spider-Man 2 opened on a Friday, it probably would have broke the opening weekend record with ease, it's just that it burned off $63 million worth of demand before it hit the weekend.

It unquestionably would have broken the record. The weird thing was that it was supposed to open on the Friday, but Sony pushed it back a whole 2 days for whatever reason (it sure as heck wasn't to avoid competition, as all that opened the next weekend was Anchorman and King Arthur, lolz).

Bingo. People are quick to use Venom as the scapegoat for the movie's problems, but that's ignoring that a lot of the more maligned story ideas in the film--Sandman being Ben's killer, Harry's amnesia, love triangles all around, Sandman getting away--were all Raimi's ideas. Venom may have been shoehorned into the film, but he was really just taking the place of Vulture (so the 3 villains issue would have still been an issue regardless).
Dunno about that, I was actually wonder if this awful plot point was only there due to venom's inclusion - as in you needed a stronger motivation for spiderman to go crazy with the Symbiote.;p

Am I the only one that liked the 45 minutes to an hour of S-M3? [/gulp] I still haven't watched it in it's entirety since opening night (only Franco's lines), but I remember liking it's start.

Shit. Forgot about that. Guess it may not have been as dramatic of a drop. I feel like if S-M3 was good, it definitely makes 400 million though, which would have left S-M2 as the only in the franchise to not hit that mark. I just think a movie's quality has a delayed affect on the franchise's strength a lot of times. It doesn't directly result in success for that movie, is what I mean to say.

Batman Begins did suffer from that though even with an extra two year cushion.

That's debatable. It grossed higher then every Batman before it (besides the original Batman) despite not having a proven, box office lead (at the time) and directed by a then mostly indie director. But if Batman Begin's box office numbers were negatively affected, did the quality of previous entries have a play in that? Probably. But I would say the main negative stigmas attached to it had more to do with franchise fatigue, darker then usual tone for a comic movie, and genre fatigue with a bunch of shitty comic films (outside of Spiderman) released before it.

Outside of my example, SM3 was hardly enough to "burn" spiderman fans and damage the franchise completely. the franchise just saw two great films that propelled it to its highest popularity level in probably.... Ever.

The worst part at this point is that the character arcs were so muddled and obtuse in TAS, that it kind of restricts the writers for the sequel to a very unclear development.

Yeah, I'm a little baffled as to why Spider-Man 2 did not match the performance of Spider-Man 1. I guess sometimes, the first movie is a lightning in a bottle type thing, where the public gets so swept up in the hype it becomes difficult to match, the same thing happened with Harry Potter, until DH2 was able to beat it after 10 years of inflation, 3D, and finale factor. I get a feeling that the Hunger Games might hit this peak as well. So even if superior sequels come out, they still can't match that fervor the original generated.

i remember at the time not being too excited about Spider-man 2. i loved the first one but the promotional material didn't get much excitement out of me. i was pleasently suprised by the film tho

Saw it last night and thought overall it was okay. I would give it a 7 out of 10. Some general observations/thoughts:

- Thought Garfield as Spidey was better than Toby (though not by much).

- Emma knocked it out of the park with Gwen and felt the dynamic between her and Garfield pretty good.

- The lizard on paper was a good choice but the execution not so good. Was pretty annoyed as to how much his design looked terrible.

- Of course Sheen was great. Field not so much. The great shame is that we're gonna have to endure her for the next couple of movies.

- Would have liked to have seen Spidey run out of webbing a couple of times (for added tension). But willing to give a pass on that.

- Maybe its just me, but I didn't feel Spidey had enough banter or witty dialogue.

- Too much of taking off of his mask.

- Crane scene was just "okay", but how did they know he would need them?

- As far as the next villian is concerned, being able to see Mysterio in live action would be pretty cool.

- Didn't like how there wasn't enough info given about Peters parents.

- Oh and one more thing, thought it was awesome how they showed Spideys progression with his web-slinging. Really enjoyed those scenes.

Adjusted figures put Batman Begins as the second lowest domestic performance. Schumacher killed the franchise and it took 7 years and Nolan to resurrect it.

Adjusted to 2005 USD:
Batman - $403,539,100
Batman Returns - $251,506,300
Batman Forever - $271,181,500
Batman and Robin - $149,881,200
Batman Begins - $205,343,800
The Dark Knight - $476,148,100

So, yeah. Batman and Robin really killed the franchise, and in the same way SM3 dented TASM, though not as much.

Compared to none in the Tobey movies, it was a lot.

You realize this is meant to be the first movie of a trilogy, right?

Crane scene was just "okay", but how did they know he would need them?

Because the guy whose son Spidey saved saw him on the TV having trouble swinging.

I don't even think Sony knew this was going to be a trilogy until a few weeks ago. Which is terrible because there were certain things in the trailer that hinted at some more information on Peter's parents. It wasn't anything that couldn't be expanded on in a sequel, but if Sony tries to stretch out this "Peter, you're not an accident, this was intentional" plot line to all three movies, it's going to end badly. It just sets up to some reveals that should have happened in this movie while using the other films to expand on Peter trying to learn more like why was his dad experimenting on him.

Did you miss the part where they was a live broadcast on TV showing Spidey was injured .. and would not be able to get to the Oscorp tower in time.

Jeez, even explaining that sounds cheesy.

Forgot about that.

I find it funny how because you showed me the cover of that issue I'm suppose to change my opinion. It just would've been nice to see him have a snout of some sort. And no I wasn't aware that there is suppose to be trilogy. But anyway I still would've liked a little more and just didn't like the way it was handled.

THANK YOU SMART THINKING PEOPLE FOR NOT FALLING COMPLETELY FOR CORPORATE CHURNING MOVIE CRAP!
Now only for every Marvel Studios movie to completely bomb.

The movie is actually doing well for a reboot after 5 years. Finally tally WW will likely be between 700 and 800 million.

That's not gonna happen either and I don't see how someone leveraging their IPs is different from other corporations and their studios making movies.

1. why were actual lizards attracted(?) to Connors? was there any reason given in the movie? was there any reason for actual lizards to be IN the movie other than to just walk around sometimes?

2. why did Uncle Ben leave that strange phone message full of praise on Peter's phone when Peter forgot to pick up Aunt May and then act really mad once Peter got home?

3. how did spider man get in the car when the car thief was trying to steal it? did he drive up with the guy who owned it?

4. did spider man ever find the guy who killed Ben? cause i think that car thief was the last guy he checked and that guy didnt have the tattoo either. (i actually feel like i missed something here because they couldnt've just dropped that storyline.)

5. was Connors' ultimate plan (
turn everyone into a lizard
) written by a 5 year old? such an unoriginal plot.

6.
the antidote that spread across the city only cured the 5 cops that got turned, right?

7. why did spider man need cranes to get from one end of the city to the other when he travels from one end of the city to the other all the time without cranes lining up?
maybe the first time ive ever seen spider man see a building down a street and basically say, 'i just cant get there'...

the whole crane scene and the dad saving him when he missed was so cheesy that i actually died. someone in the theater had to revive me.

the relationship between peter and gwen was pretty good. the actors did well with those roles and actually made me feel something in the final scene between the two of them.

i liked all the web action and the way spider man moved in the two main fights with Lizard.

i liked when he set up a web in the sewers like a real spider... even though i dont know why he did it or what he was hoping to get out of it. what did Peter expect to happen there?

Connors/Lizard, as a character, was kind of a mess.

it felt way too long.

it was a fine movie. didnt hate it, didnt love it.

it would be pretty rad if a sequel deals with the green goblin / death of gwen stacy. that might actually be something.

The film was awesome as it showed how smart Spiderman was.

He basically was a lot like Bale's batman.

He realised that The Lizard was in the Sewers and noticed lots of Lizards heading into the sewers. He then went down to a sewer hub and laid his web to cover the network and then used his Spider Senses to work out where they were all going.

Connors was a mess mentally. The medicine was messing with his head. His initial attack on the bridge was to save the soldiers in the hospital as they were going to get illegally tested on...as he took more of the stuff, he went insane and then regained his sanity towards the end.

The Lizard is a conflicted character. Parker is his best student and they have a connection. Basically...lifes complicated!

Oh and Spiderman was injured and shot. That's why he needed help!

One of the biggest problems this movie has that people can seemingly unanimously agree upon is tone inconsistency, that right there is a tell-tale sign of weak direction.

Talking about the visual direction. The action sequences are outstanding, even more considering his directoral history.

I almost did not go see this one becaue Spider-Man was always my favorite comic but I did not like that actor they got to play him for the movies I still went and saw 1-2 did not see 3

this new guy and this take of the story I found it easier to enjoy

It was always planned to be a trilogy. They hired Orci and Kurtzman to write the sequel back in April, and set the release date for the second movie for May 2, 2014.

I was referencing the fact that news broke recently saying that Sony had mentioned in an official statement that there would be at least two more films. Twas a joke. Again, we all assumed as much.

Anyone notice the strong "parallel" between SM1 and ASM when
Connors is threatened with being fired, then tries the test material on himself out of desperation, turns into a freak monster, and hunts down the person who fires him and tries to kill him
.

It was like Deja Vu.
I thought
he was threatened with more that just being fired... but it was obscure.
I didn't get that as parallel with Osborn losing his company tbh. But nice catch.

I think ASM missed out on a great opportunity by not introducing
Kraven
along with The Lizard storyline. It could of lead to a great motive for him being the villain in the sequel with
Spiderman showing him up and taking down The Lizard first
. Since that didn't happen, I have a bit of an oddball villain-wish for the sequel. I would like to see the enforcers and chameleon teaming up, and I believe it could make for very interesting film with Webb's grittier version of Spidey. But, I don't think any director/producer will see them important/interesting enough to base a movie around.

As for what I think of the teaser,
I believe it is hinting towards Doc Ock with the top hat, and potentially the start of a road that leads to the sinister six in the third film. I also think the second film will have Green Goblin as well, and will go through the whole Gwen Stacy infamous storyline along with introducing MJ
. Which, personally, I think both films will be an absolute mess going by how much trouble this movie had in establishing anything worthwhile character-wise just with The Lizard.
Kraven in a sequel would most certainly be about him coming to NYC after rumors of a giant Lizard. Him in ASM would've never worked with the tone, though. His character wouldn't have had a good footing in the origins bits like Conners.

Also, I doubt that was Doc Ock. The top hat is a 'thing' for Osborn as well, and it could even be for Vulture. Hell, could be for Mysterio too. Too up in the air, but certainly not Ock.

They made the second movie official back in April when they hired writers for it and set a release date.
