Man it's so absurdly disappointing. Forget about the cheese for a second. The way they built it up was really good. Spidey is down and out. Bleeding, injured, unsure how he's going to get from point A to point B. How could they possibly fuck up the pay off? Whose damned decision was it to throw in that nonsensical scene of Spidey's webshooters malfunctioning? And his entire webslinging scene should have been one continious shot and not broken up with scenes of dumbfuck crane guy and random police officer redirecting traffic. Seriously - what the fuck.
Wait, what're you even talking about?

:lol
:lol

Do you realize how foolish you sound? You don't have a problem with the crane guy helping Spidey (and, also ignoring the NYPD's request to evacuate), but the train folk standing up for Spidey is a no-go for you?

I'm not a huge fan of the crane scene either. I guess it's a question of can I buy the idea that a crane operator would risk going into an evacuated zone vs. can I buy that a train full of people would stand in direct opposition to the clear and present threat of Doctor Octopus. Or that not a single person on the train would think of making an easy buck from selling a picture of Tobey Maguire's butter face. The answers are yes, no, and no.

It's one thing for the crane guy and his subordinates to hop onto their vehicles and help Spider-Man, especially when the threat is more obscure (from their perspective), and they think Spider-Man can prevent it. It would have been another if the scene involved the crane operator and his subordinates jumping in between Spider-Man and the Lizard saying "We've had enough of bullies like you!" and fought the Lizard armed only with their wrenches, hard hats, and tough New Yorker sensibilities.

His Batman work is probably better, but his work on Spider-Man is pretty incredible. The so called 'random flourishes' are all encapsulating very specific elements of Spider-Man, from soaring freedom, responsibility, growth, sorrow, and danger. The very fast percussion is there to crate a fast tempo, mimicking the fast pace at which spider legs move.

His Spider-Man theme, and his work on the trilogy in general, is nothing short of fantastic. There's virtually nothing 'Spider-Man' about the generic and hap hazzard and frequently disconnected score in ASM.

To each his own. To me the Spider-Man score sounded like Elfman on cruise control. And I would agree with you that ASM's score is nothing special either.

Either he missed, or his webshooters fucked up. Either way it was dumb as shit to show him fall and then grab on to the crane. It was completely unnecessary and broke the momentum.
No, he missed because he didn't jump far enough (since one of his legs were shot), thought that was obvious. And I disagree, that fall was executed well, even if the scene itself was unnecessary, it worked. It seemed straight out of the book to have him stand up, start running, and then fall and make all the kids gasp. Wasn't a big deal imo. But they should've removed the helicopter form that scene entirely.

One of the very few things I love about TASM is that since they've endeared Gwen to the audience tenfold, this makes MJ's eventual appearance something both exciting and worrying. They really have to nail her casting and character for it to gel properly and since MJ>Gwen, I'm praying it works out.

Emma Stone with red hair

So for those wondering, yes the crane scene is on youtube.

"Hey, Spider-man saved my kid, and since I coincidentally happen to be 100 feet away from him at his moment of greatest need... I, Crane Guy, Chief Executive of Cranes, will redirect my fleet of cranes - which happen to be perfectly arranged in the direct path between Spider-man and his destination - to help him swing there because I somehow deduced in the 2 seconds since hearing the radio news that that's what he needs. And just in case his mechanical web shooters fail on his first swing, I'll personally helm the bonus crane that will swoop up in the nick of time to catch him. Ok, txt the NYPD helicopter to please shine a light across our cranes to Oscorp once they're lined up so Spider-man gets what's going on."

Agreed on the helicopter. Though I did like the light it shined on Spider-Man. His costume was all cool and shiny.

Gwen Stacy + Clone Saga = Emma Stone as Mary Jane

There, I just wrote the third movie.

Someday they're going to make the Ben Reilly movie of my dream. An abriged clone saga, where Peter finds out that he's just been a clone all along. Eventually he and Reilly become good friends, Peter reluctantly gives up the webs, and soon gets used to living as Peter Parker while Reilly acts as Spider-Man. It climaxes with the defeat of GG, but Ben Reilly gets impaled with the glider and we find out he (Peter) was the true Spider-Man all along.

Eventually they'll run out of stories and reboot options. They'll just have to do this.

And all to waste, since he could have just gotten a ride with Stacy!

further reading on this, it is clear they are going towards the Ultimate universe instead of the traditional one which IMO is a big mistake

the heavy emphasis on Richard Parker is a big big turn off for pre-Ultiamte Spidey fans

Peter didn't need to ignore the funeral. In fact, his decision to simply ignore her and Gwen after her fathers death, something he would plenty of, made no sense. He could have simply attended the funeral and later on approach Gwen informing her of the reasons why he can no longer see her. It was insensitive on his part, the man who lost two father figures and cried about it

I think peter felt it was his fault that gwen's father died. How could he attend the funeral when he feels he is responsible for stacy's death, at least that is my feeling. In addition to that, if he attends the funeral gwen will want to lean on him in her time of despair and with stacy's final words being to stay away from his daughter, how could he continue to be close to her when he is made to seperate from her on top of being responsible for her dad's death.

He could of obviously ignored all that and went to the funeral anyway but there were so many conflicting emotions I don't blame him for not going.

Bahahaha, this would be an epic disaster. But it just might work.

Wrong, it's the perfect thing to do. Only problem is they shouldn't have cut it all out of ASM to begin with.

Pretty much this. It made perfect sense imo. To me, the issue wasn't why he didn't go to the funeral but lack of emphasis put on how much time passed between that and him saying that line in class.

:lol
I can buy the Mr. Crane Master wanting to help Spidey because, ya know, he saved his son earlier, but the rest of the crane guys ignoring the evacuation orders to help Spidey (whom they don't know yet)? Nah. It's much more believe for a group of trainer passengers who, after watching Spidey courageously stop their runaway train & pass out (ie, be defenseless), be inspired to stand up against Doc Oc when Spidey wasn't able to anymore. Much, much more believable.

Also, :lol @ the photo complaint. That's overthinking the situation. Might as well complain there wasn't any vomit, shit and piss on the train, because I'd imagine at least a few passengers would've done so. :lol

EDIT: To be fair, I didn't have a problem with the crane scene. I guess I just expect a certain amount of cheese in superhero movies (Spiderman especially). Now, the scene didn't have the "Wow" effect on me like the director wanted...I just don't hate the scene.

You sure were paying attention during this movie!

So perfect. Should have been the actual cover.
Best part of that was it reaffirmed Bagley being back, too. Had any other artist drawn Uncle Ben in the Ult. comics before, other than Bagley (before he left)?

You have a point with the other crane operators, and I can understand if you find that pretty unbelievable. But I chalk that up to the threat they were facing being more obscure, and Spider-Man being viewed as someone who could stop it. But I don't see Joe Blow Wall Street Banker standing up to a supervillain he just saw rip a train apart.

And I mention the unmasking as opposed to vomit, shit, and piss, because the movie directly discusses the idea that Spider-Man can trust these people with his identity. "It's alright!" Nope, it's not.

^No, you're right in that this was more believable than anything in the other movies. If you guys want I can list off the top of my head a hundred things from SM1-2 that make no sense plot wise.

Anyway, Conners was supposed to have a son in this too?

Found this interview with a kid who was playing Billy Conners, and supposedly had 3 scenes in the movie (all shot and done). Apparently they were all cut (and I mean obliterated).

I loved the crane scene. It's like that, don't mess with Spider-Man cause the New Yorkers will fuck you up scene in SM1. I believe the father of the boy that Spidey saved, told the workers they would get overtime.(my theater laughed at that) It was cheesy but effective.

It's sad that his entire family simply doesn't exist in the movie. We know he is/was married (he has a ring), but it looks as if he was a single. The family isn't mention even once.

I don't get it. What was with all the drastic last minute cuts in this movie? Why cut out the information on the parents? Why have every trailer mention how Peter was somehow special but then have those lines and plot threads cut? If it's an issue where Marvel didn't like it, why didn't they say something much earlier in the process?

Sony execs/test audiences didn't like the initial cut and people panicked.

The movie made a shitload of money and people seem to like it, though, so those fears were probably unfounded.

Still gets me every time.

is there a reason why the text isnt considered cheesy?
like, did he at some point tell peter, "do good, kid" before he died or something?

Should've cut the random wisecracking scene.
probably shouldve added more, really.

save it for the sequel, man. "stretch this mystery out a little" is probably their thinking

it worked in SM1 because of the post 9/11 mentality. it doesnt work in this because its just copying SM1, for some reason. its like they HAD to have an american flag / patriotic duty scene in this movie because SM1 had it.

Ok, I am really confused, why is the secret origin or untold story or whatever supposed to be good? I can't wrap my head around how its supposed to be quality writing. I can understand feeling crummy about the other cuts, but not with cutting that particular plot line.

Because, even if it sucks, there's logic strands in this movie that lead absolutely nowhere and see no payoff. I'd rather see a flawed film in its entirety than some hacket-job studio vision with dangling loose ends.

It's not actually in the comic, just a variant cover.

This movie got cut the fuck up. Jesus Christ. Studio meddling at it's finest. Untold Story, my ass.

I think protocida on SHH put it best;

It's simple. Sony wanted to create a different origin for Spider-Man. Marc Webb created the concept of Peter being part of a ''bigger plan''. This information leaked. Fans hate change. Fans complained. Sony wanted the movie to be succesful. Sony got scared fans wouldn't watch it if they changed stuff. So they cut all the change.

And now fans are complaing it's ''too similar''.

That's probably what happened.

You'd be surprised how easily they could be frightened into pulling out like that. Which is unfortunate, but I guess it means we'll see a lot more in the sequel now that this has been a success.

I agree, it comes across like a hack job after that recent rumour that the execs weren't happy
with the test screening.
Hopefully they allow a bluray release with the deleted scenes put back in but I can't see that happening.

It sounds absurd and ass pulling though, especially for Spider-Man. Its not like this is A) an unknown hero and B) hasn't been done with another major Marvel hero and movie, the Hulk (also to terrible results)

Overall, I agree. I think a lot of it sounds horrible myself.

That said, if it was a bad idea (as it looked to be), then it should have been weeded out in the script stage. Trying to salvage the story in post-production has turned the movie into a mess.

I'd rather things be cohesive and dumb than ill-conceived AND poorly executed.

Personal preference though.

isnt't it ironic that the Ang Lee Hulk haters who hated it because of Banner's father's involvement in the origin story are the same ones who love and relish the Richard Parker angle in ASM

Hrmm? I thought it was done piss poor by Ang Lee, but at least it was original to the comics 20 years prior.

That's unfortunate. I would really like to see the movie as Webb originally intended.
I for one can't believe they scrapped this awesome set piece
amazing-spider-man-image-andrew-garfield-rhys-ifans-25.jpg

for a fucking kitchen and college ruled notebook paper.

THIS is Spider-Man. And no, it doesn't matter if you think its cookie-cutter Elfman. When you hear this, you think Spidey. It's iconic and will forever be linked to the character.
You're right, but it doesn't fucking matter.

He shouldn't come back, and neither should Horner. The problem with this score was that it was too much like Elfman's but with added cheese. They need something new to compliment the different tone.
