The Art of Editing and Suicide Squad

I just hope WB and DC have learned from their mistakes and Wonder Woman and Justice League are edited and handled much better because the DCEU really should be great, like the Marvel movies have been, potentially even better but they are 3 movies in now and so far its been very disappointing.

Suicide Squads box office doesn't fill me with confidence

I liked the movie a lot but this video is highly educational. Suicide Squad was a lot more troubled than I appreciated.

I saw this last night. Good video outside of the weird set up with...him chugging codeine? I have no clue.

The pink unicorn thing I definitely noticed when I saw the movie. And as others have said, the entire first half of the film is practically unwatchable.

The DCEU biggest enemies have been the editors. Why do people who do that for a living do it so, so bad?

Lol please. Blaming this 100% on the editors is ridiculous. I'm sure they did the best they could with garbage they were handed. Plus there's also the factor of the studio stepping in and making editing decisions, which is never a good idea.

I've argued with friends that whatever DCEU does, the stench of previous movies will always drive away potential viewers.

This wicked game needs to restart.

It's clearly not "the best they could", especially when there is evidence of botched last minute jobs (The BvS UC being the theatrical until mere months before the release and S having 12 cuts, with the one made by the trailer house, after the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer was released, being chosen over "the director's").

and he still missed a lot of stuff :P Like the squad seeing Harley take the elevator but somehow getting to the the top floor before her. The guy in the video is mixing the terms a bit though, like the Amanda Waller twist being bad has nothing to do with editing, that's a script issue.

The video isn't only about the editing and he says several times that the script had issues.

you blame the editors for that?

WW is up against Captain Underpants and soon after the mummy and transformer. I don't see a chance of WW having good Box office debut or legs at all. But then BVS can sell so IDK.

Edit

Cars3 is also out in June , WW have a lot of competitions.

The whole movie seems like it was mess through the whole production, From not having real script to editing.

I mean, Ayer is no wizard director. Guy made some decent movies and some bad ones. But even the bad ones felt coherent. Suicide Squad doesn't. There was something fundamentally wrong with that movie production.

Katana is hilarious. Her express intro, her reluctance to speak English even though she understands it / gratuitous Japanese that sets her as a "see, she's clearly Japanese! her name is Katana and she obviously speaks Japanese" character, her painfully one-dimensional personality - it really feels like a "one episode" character in a 90s cartoon.

Also that failed humour thing when she is asked if she wears that mask because she is ugly underneath, and then she takes it off, and she's normal. So, no comic punchline and no actual reason for her wearing the mask.

i didn't mean to suggest wonder woman will do well, i meant suicide squads success tells WB that people don't actually care if the movies are good

Unlike GAF i liked MoS and BvS

So I thought will to be the same with this movie
"it cant be that bad, you are all exaggerating"

So i saw this movie recently and holy shit is so bad

is like... this should be a case of studio in universities
that kind of bad

Once again CW shows itself as the better live action DCverse. And that is even with Arrow's S3 being uneven as hell.

Wait what ? It did surprisingly well at the box office, despite the bad reviews.

I've argued with friends that whatever DCEU does, the stench of previous movies will always drive away potential viewers.

I'm willing to give Wonder Woman a chance and then if that's good, Justice League but if they both disappoint, then I think it will be the end and they will need to have a rethink and reboot.

i think you misunderstood my post. i know suicide squad did well that's why i think WB will continue to make terrible movies

The worst edited movie i've ever seen is Special Forces
There's a bunch of French action movies with awful editing actually.

Examples have been posted all over the internet since the movie came out and if you're still not receptive to them then that's on you.

Yikes, sorry! Just wanted to discuss here since...

What has that to do with the editing of Suicide Squad?

...it's in the OP.

One of the most obvious examples is when there is a 10-minute action scene in which Batman tries to get the Kryptonite that ends with absolutely nothing being achieved only to then cut to the Kryptonite being stolen because Batman then accomplished his task off-screen. So something of no consequence whatsoever is given a huge amount of time while the actual plot development happens off-screen.

Batman's unsuccessful recklessness to get the Kryptonite leads to the confrontation with Superman, leading to the ultimatum - further plot/character development. Lex discovering he was robbed doesn't phase him, because that's part of the plan. That's further development - either way Lex, knows that's the weapon to stop Superman, and he's been leading bats/supes to duke it out, and this just further reinforces his plan.

Another example would be the whole Superman in Court scene that ends with the Bomb going off. At first it seems like someone wants to frame Superman, further pushing public opinion against him but then a few minutes later everyone is aware that it was actually in the wheelchair...so it didn't do anything? Also, the way that scene is shot and edited it seems weird and jarring that Superman didn't stop the bomb from going off and, in fact, doesn't even moven a muscle to protect anyone, instead just staring sadly at the camera.I haven't seen the movie since I saw it in cinema so I don't remember every detail but those are two examples that still jump out to me from an editing perspective.

It did do soemthing, which answers your next point: He wasn't looking. He was so worried about his image that he wasn't "looking" for it to be part of a bigger scheme. He admitted this on the balcony. It's not necessarily him being framed, but that everything being centered around him just gets more innocent people killed - this is what Lex was trying to show. I never thought that bombing scene was anything about framing Superman.

But I would ask you to open a new thread or post in one of the existing BvS threads if you want to continue to discuss the movie, this is about the Youtube video I posted and the points that are being made there ;)

As I posted above, BvS was explicitly mentioned in the OP and I was asking for examples of the editing. If that was not your plan, my bad.

I don't think the editing in BvS was that bad. It was clearly disjointed. But I could have fucked with the dream-like pace if the plot wasn't so convoluted. It did that movie no favors to go with both that lex plan AND edit it like that. Ultimate Cut alleviated this tho

Suicide Squad was just a complete dumpster fire example. You really could tell a trailer team hacked away at it.

There's only two parts in BvS (UC) that are broken, Lois' spear thing and the flow-cutting email scene. The rest holds up to scrutiny.

It's more the script than anything TBH. There were like 3-4 lines from Deadshot and Harley each that gave me hope that the movie would start taking a turn for the better but it just kept going back to being awful.

Movie wasn't even fun or good for dumb action. It was just bad. I don't even know how people got excited it would be good because all of the trailers were disjointed and had way too much going on as well.
