Saw the thread as I was leaving work and was like "man fuck 2016, this sucks". Then as I was driving home one of the local stations was playing nothing but Prince. So, so, SO many songs they played had serious memories tied to them and the whole thing really settled in. RIP to one of the greatest.

And seriously, fuck 2016.

So MTV is playing a marathon of Prince music videos today. That's good. They are putting multiple minutes of commercials between every song. That's less good. They just started playing Girls ain't nothing but Trouble by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince......That's...come on man.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
I never listened to his music, and mostly remember his name changes in the 90's, but this is tragic news.

Harsh stuff, this 2016.

fuck its just really starting to hit me now especially watching this show

I probably said in the Bowie thread that there would probably only be one other artists death that would cause me to actually tear up and that would be Prince and it fuckin happened only a few months later.

well I'm tearing up now

this is bullshit.

Diamonds And Pearls, The Love Symbol Album, Come, and The Gold Experience.

Parade and Sign O' The Times are really great too.

Sign O' the Times. It's long and crazy, but I love it. Also, Dirty Mind. Controversy. Parade. Prince in the 80's is practically unparalleled in my mind.

Prince post-80's is harder to pin down, and I'm not sure if I would consider any of those albums classics but there's a ton of really good music that came from it regardless.

Thanks!

This is a trailer for "Akounak Teggdalit Taha Tazouhai," a remake of Purple Rain that was filmed in two weeks in a small town in Niger by a group of Tuaregs. The music is incredible. The translation got a little funny since 'purple' doesn't exist in Tuareg, so the official movie title is 'Rain the Color of Blue with a little Red in it'

Quuting cause more people need to know about this.

I'm seeing Bombino tonight!

Whenever someone passes away that I either personally appreciated or respected as an artist, as an artist myself I pay tribute to them the best way I know how. By drawing an Illustration of them.

Prince is a big gap for me when it comes to music. Since his stuff was never on YouTube, and still isn't of streaming places like Spotify, I never really sought it out. I wonder if there are others like me.

Still a bummer. Dude had like the most style.

I tell this story from time to time:

My kids knew about Janet Jackson. Had her concerts, music. For some reason I never introduced them to Michael Jackson's music.

A year or 2 before Michael Jackson died for some reason I had this MJ play list vibe and finally let them hear and see him perform.

Kids became instant fans.

One son was 3 or 4 at the time...and ....every time...as soon as I played Wanna be Startin Something if he was nearby he would turn his head real fast towards the music and just listen. He wouldn't dance but you could tell he was listening.

I hope his family do be more relaxed with it too..

My nephew who is turning 9 this year loves MJ and got into him thanks to Just Dance, lol. But yeah, MJ is someone who's music is readily available all over the internet. Prince on the other hand, good luck stumbling across his music accidentally or even hearing more than a few songs you occasionally find on youtube from an old concert, IF you search for it.

F this year. First Bowie, now Prince...:(

I'm still trying to process this. The guy was like a musical fixture in ones life.

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
Yeah watching the react to him killing it on the guitar is awesome. And this cover is great.

Not sure how true this is but I recall reading shortly after that hall of fame induction that prince claimed to have been unfamiliar with the song. Harrison's widow was offended and did not want prince to be a part of the performance. Petty and others convinced her to not make a big deal of it and this is what the world got.

RIP Prince, there's a tribute at Fort Greene walking distance from me...but the Brooklyn Bowl thing might be better, may show up there later.

Wow, this makes me pretty sad, although I feel like a tool for saying I'm a fan and not having listened to most of his post-80's stuff. Love most of those 80's albums to death, though, they've been a big part of my last 7 years.

Thanks for all the lovely times, Prince.

Started listening to him late last year when I was looking to expand my musical horizons. The first was Purple Rain, which is amazing. Later, I bought 1999 which I didn't think was as good, but still a great piece. I actually enjoyed it more when I listened to it again a couple weeks ago.

Since then, I had been meaning to ask gaf about his other works that I should check out. I kept forgetting to, and of course, I never wanted to ask it in a thread like this.

Terrible news to wake up to hearing.
Prince, moreso than some other great artists, was an inconsistent album artist, so there's a little more work required on the part of the listener to dig out the material that works best for them. His productivity was both a boon and a detriment in that sense, there are duds and hidden gems all over the catalog.

That being said, once Prince clicks, Dirty Mind is that album. It might not be before that point, but it's probably his most consistent work and my personal favorite.

His Superbowl half time show is the best of all time, when he starts playing All Along the Watchtower goosebumps everytime

that's really great. would make a nice print too.
Thank you. I am trying to find a place to do large size prints on good quality paper. I have a bunch I want to do and have already been asked for a few of my Illustrations as prints (especially my Bernie Sanders one).
I may be able to get a gallery show if I can figure it out as well, so if anyone knows of a place that can print large size prints on good quality paper/canvas please DM me. Even if it is a suggestion for a printer I can purchase myself. It would TRULY be appreciated.

I'm ashamed to admit that have little knowledge of Prince aside from Purple Rain, Batman OST, Superbowl performance, and the Guitar Gently Weeps solo. I'm going to fix that, sad that it took his passing for me to take the initiative.

Rip you beautiful man.

After the 80s/early 90s, I agree. Almost everything during his peak was gold, though.

The 2000s/2010s had good stuff like 3121, Lotusflow3r, Art Official Age, and Hit N Run Phase II.

Just got home from work from downtown Minneapolis. Was pouring as I drove.

WCCO updated their weather watcher color to purple.
(weather watcher is basically a lit up sign with the letters WCCO and they use colored lights to signify the current weather...red if it's heating up, green for precipitation etc... and will do RWB for American holidays, purple and gold for Vikings wins etc...). I can see it from my office.

Sounds like a big crowd is gathering at 1st ave.

Still reeling from the news. I'm sure I'm not alone in this but I've had Prince songs playing all day long. The man is a legend.
